ARCHIVED Should I Get Some Other Tests
GFinDC replied to scottyg354's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Scotty, The sweating could be an indicator of infection or inflammation. I used to sweat a lot especially when sleeping at night. Ongoing irritation in the gut can cause that IMHO. That kind of irritation can be caused by food intolerances (as it was for me), or parasites, or Crohns or UC which are already ruled out. The answer for me was changing... -

Oh, look at that, we are indeed getting there! Close now, really close. But if you want to read a long thread, search for the lyme disease thread Now that was a long thread. -
ARCHIVED I Need To Change The Way I Feel About Food....
GFinDC replied to MitziG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Mitzi, Maybe you can find a local celiac support group in the area? Around here there is a group that hosts dinners and potlucks for the local celiacs to attend. If there is one in your state nearby it might be worth checking out. About the daughter, I wonder is she is reacting to another food. There are so many possibilities there but the common... -
ARCHIVED Seriously, Will It Ever Get Better?
GFinDC replied to kam43's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Kam, Some people do get the ability to eat certain foods back. Dairy is a common one. Celiac destroys the villi lining the small intestine that make the lactase enzyme that digests dairy sugar (lactose). So after you heal it is possible that enzyme will be produced again and dairy will be ok. Some of us develop a reaction to casein, the protein... -

Some starting the gluten-free diet tips for the first 6 months: Get tested before starting the gluten-free diet. Don't eat in restaurants Eat only whole foods not processed foods. ARCHIVED Repost: Bloodwork After Being Gluten Free
GFinDC replied to Peppa-minto's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't know about the elmiron capsules. It would be better to get some that are known to be gluten-free. Regarding your symptoms not being too severe. Most people in the USA who have celiac don't know that they have it. There are many reasons for that but some are: Most people with celiac do not have digestive symptoms. Most people with celiac... -
Hi Larsky, There has been research showing that gluten molecules can act like opiates in the brain. This means that they can actually cause withdrawal symptoms. You can search on gluten and opiate to get more info. What that also means is that the longer you stay off gluten the less those withdrawal symptoms affect you. Eating it every couple weeks...

Well, that sux. But you made a good try at doing it and that itself is worthwhile. Many people never even try difficult things, so making an attempt, even if you fail, is very worthwhile. It shows you have come courage and fortitude, or what is properly called gumption. You may have done just fine if you were in an environment that was truly gluten-free...

ARCHIVED Losing Hope...
GFinDC replied to kswan08's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If it is potatoes causing the problem then you might be reacting to nightshades. NIghtshade foods are tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and eggplant. Nightshades can have enough alkaloids in them to cause problems for some people. Tobacco is a nightshade too. Not to 100 yet.. -

I don't know of any difference. It shouldn't mater as far as eating gluten-free goes. -
ARCHIVED Do Gi's Adhere To Dx Guidelines For Celiac?
GFinDC replied to squirmingitch's topic in Publications & Publicity
Thanks Squirmy, That's kind of what I expected. It seems like the celiac disease diagnosis process is all over the board among doctors and not a set defined process at all. No wonder it is hard to get diagnosed! -
ARCHIVED Repost: Bloodwork After Being Gluten Free
GFinDC replied to Peppa-minto's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Peppa-minto, Symptoms don't usually start out at the worst stage, just like cars don't go from 0 to 100 in zero seconds. But ongoing inflammation and damage does take a toll and most likely your symptoms would worsen after awhile. How soon that would happens is anybody's guess though. Some people develop additional auto-immune diseases and go to... -
ARCHIVED I Know This Has Been Run Into The Ground, But...
GFinDC replied to Arcanine's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The article link is interesting, but you can't count on being diagnosed in 2 weeks time. The research isn't the practice at this point. I agree, if you are that sick when you eat gluten a challenge would be a very bad idea. And what would be the point? Since you already know you get violently ill when eating gluten, a diagnosis does nothing to change... -
ARCHIVED Testing After Being Gluten Free
GFinDC replied to Peppa-minto's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Peppaminto, Sorry we have steered your thread so far from a simple answer. Just maybe the answer will change soon. Hi Lisa, Tom, Here's a draft letter. Just a draft, can probably use some fixing up. Suggestions welcome. August 16, 2012 Celiac Support Group Dear : ?? I am writing to request that (celiac support... -
ARCHIVED My One Week Update
GFinDC replied to tctwhite's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
HI, Being low on vitamins is a sign you may have damage to your villi preventing absorption. That's probably something doctors should always test people for, vitamin deficiencies. You are still very new to the gluten-free diet, so it is not surprising it hasn't cleared all your symptoms up yet. It may be a few months up to a year or more for you to... -
Hi Shaun, Have you had the blood antibody tests and an endoscopy? If the blood antibodies are positive you may not need an endoscopy. Usually it takes a couple weeks to get the antibody results from a lab. It is helpful to get a paper copy of the resutls for yourself also. You might want to review them with another doctor later or even post them on...

ARCHIVED I Want To Make Some Friends With Celiac
GFinDC replied to SusieQ's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I think that's ok myself. Sometimes people are subscribed to threads and the get a email notice when someone responds. Unfortunately younger people tend not to stick around for long on the forum. Maybe us grouchy oldsters scare them off! -
ARCHIVED Testing After Being Gluten Free
GFinDC replied to Peppa-minto's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for looking that info up Lisa. It seems there is no agreement on the required time for a gluten challenge among the main celiac centers in the USA. Kind of a basic thing that it seems like they could agree on. Some say 3 months, others say a month and half. And the recent research suggests it may be possible to detect celiac reactions with a much... -

ARCHIVED Still Confused After Reading Up.
GFinDC replied to culinerdy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
HI, That sux that he left you hanging like that. Does he have a partner or can you ask your primary doc to get the results and give them to you? In the meantime if you are feeling better gluten-free then just stay on the gluten-free diet. It can't hurt you and if you are celiac or NCGI it can only help. Some starting the gluten-free diet... -

ARCHIVED Testing After Being Gluten Free
GFinDC replied to Peppa-minto's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Tom, Thanks for bringing up the testing / challenge issue. Scott (admin) posted a research link recently about interferon increasing in a short time, something like 10 days on a gluten challenge. It is a new study though, not an established process for doctors to follow. Probably most doctors won't even hear about the research for a year or more... -
Hi, This is only part of an article on Zonulin. The article link has the rest. Zonulin is a chemical that regulates the passage of material form the gut into the bloodstream. Dr. A. Fassano (UMD) researched it. Black pepper is supposed to help reduce the effect of zonulin. Open Original Shared Link Originally Released: May 1, 2000 Contact: Ellen...

Hi Shaun, I was close to your age at one time, but it has only been a few decades, 3 maybe 4 tops. I stared out having lactose intolerance for 9 years or so, and then found out I had celiac disease. Celiac is not actually an allergy, allergies are IgE immune reactions. Celiac is IgA or IgG or some other immune reactions. IgE reactions are like hayfever...

HI Cazzzy, Nuero symptoms are pretty common for celiacs. Celiac can cause malabsorption and that can mean you don't get enough B vitamins and others. B-vitamins are important for proper nerve function. Low vitamin and mineral levels are a sign of celiac disease.
