  1. HI Wysterya, Eating simple is a good idea. Your small intestine is around 22 feet long, and the surface area is about that of a tennis court. If you think about how a scraped knee feels, and then magnify that area to the size of tennis court, you get an idea of the area affected. That's a big scraped knee! So it can take a while to heal, and be...
  2. That's fine to not get tested. If you can stick to the diet without a formal diagnosis there is no need for the test. It's not like the tests get us any better treatment. I hope you feel better soon.
  3. Hi, You may find that after you have been on a whole foods diet for a while, your interest in Skittles and things like that diminishes. At least it did for me. Whole foods taste better than processed foods. You know Skittles are coated with shellac right? Read up on shellac and see if it is something you want to eat. I use shellac in my encaustic...
  4. That's great that your family are coming around DT. Learning to eat healthy food is so important for them also. It is a skill they can use their whole lives. And maybe pass onto their children. Hopefully they won't become celiac or gluten sensitive, but it might happen someday. Or someone they know may need help with it.
  5. Hi, The basic idea is to cut down a a bare minimum number of foods in your diet, and then slowly add one food at a time. Starting with 5 foods is good number. Choose foods that you don't think you will have reactions to and that provide good nutrition and can be used in several ways. When you add a food eat it every day for 3 days to see if you have...
  6. Hi Laura, Welcome to the site! I think it could be another food intolerance causing your issues. Are you eating a whole foods diet? Avoiding restraunts? Have you checked your vitamins and meds, shampoos etc? Another possibility is a gallbladder issue. They seem to be fairly common with celiacs. Some starting the gluten-free diet tips...
  7. Welcome to the site Wysterya and LMB, @LMB, yes that is something happened to me at time, being better and then worse. Some starting the gluten-free diet tips for the first 6 months: Get tested before starting the gluten-free diet. Don't eat in restaurants Eat only whole foods not processed foods. Eat only food you cook yourself, think...
  8. Hi Mike, Have the docs checked her vitamins and mineral levels? Celiac can cause malabsorption of nutrients and she may be low on something her skin or nerves need. Problem is it is hard to correct deficiencies with diet or pills if your gut doesn't absorb it. So if she is celiac it may take some time on the gluten-free diet for the symptoms to resolve...
  9. Hi Shay, They hit all the high points already for you. I concur, eating whole foods is the way to go, and is also cheaper than processed foods. A simpler diet is good to start with, and the fewer the number of ingredients in a meal the easier it is to troubleshoot issues. Frozen foods with 3 or fewer ingredients are generally good, and Mission brand...
  10. Hi Bunnie, I am sorry to hear about your loss. Suicide is painful for the survivers. I had a co-worker who took his life some years ago. It was very sudden and unexpected. I wondered for a long time if there was some sign or something I missed, or if there was something I could have said to him to help him. But there is no way to know about these...
  11. Hi Nicole, I get joint pain from nightshades and soy. So just backing up the idea of nightshades possibly causing a problem. It may take awhile after stopping them for symptoms to go away though. A month and half is not too long for symptoms to resolve. So if you stop them don't expect a change within a week. Neroli (The Shroomster) has RA and...
  12. Hi Jade, I don't know if you are crazy or not, but many people do have celiac. It is much easier to get the blood antibody test panel done now, before going gluten-free. It is likely you would need to do a gluten challenge fora while if you do it later, and that could be very painful. Reactions to gluten seem to intensify after going gluten-free...
  13. To test for DH they take a biopsy sample of the skin next to a lesion., not the lesion itself. A positive for DH is a positive for celiac.
  14. There is skin condition associated with celiac called dermatitis herpetiformis. There is a section of the forum for it and you can find more info there and even pictures. Just in case that's what you have. People with DH sometimes have fewer GI symptoms at first for some reason. Positive tests aren't wrong usually. It's the negatives tests that are...
  15. Hi Nikki, I agree, the testing for celiac should come first. It is much easier to do testing now before you go gluten-free. After going gluten-free it may be too painful to go back on gluten for the testing. Your symptoms do sound like they could be celiac. A celiac blood antibody test panel is the first thing to get. An endoscopy is sometimes...
  16. Hi Betty, You are right about a link between Hashimoto's thyroiditis and celiac. There are several people on the board who have both. People with celiac have a higher chance of getting other autoimmmune diseases. You can find lists by searching on celiac related condition or associated condition. There are no tests for NCGI ) non-celiac gluten intolerance...
  17. Can you try split green peas instead of the lentils? I suggest you look at all your vitamins and meds also, and maybe eliminate them for a bit to see if anything changes. It does sound like something you are taking in every day is affecting you. Quinoa needs to be very well washed before cooking as it has saponins (soaps) in the shell that can make people...
  18. Yep, I saw Dr. G's letter also. I thought there were more recent research articles about the gliaden - opiate link than that though. Open Original Shared Link I think I posted some in the past in fact. Oh well, he is a doctor and a celiac expert, so he must be right.
  19. I just saw this article in the DC Senior Beacon by Andrea Kohn on celiac disease. She is with Capital Digestive care, and they have 16 offices around the DC area. Pretty good article al in all. Cheryl Harris is well known in the area. I'd trust her recommendation. Open Original Shared Link The article is on page 13 of the print edition. You can...
  20. I guess you didn't notice the rubber band attached to those dollars I refunded eh? Yeah, coconut is something I'd like to be able to eat but it doesn't agree with that idea. I don't know if I'd take the Miralax, it seems to me psyillium husks would be a more natural remedy than PEG. Not much easier to spell but at least it's shorter. Open Original...
  21. Hi, The FAQ and Newbie info thread linked below may help you get familiar with the testing and starting the gluten-free diet. Some starting the gluten-free diet tips for the first 6 months: Get tested before starting the gluten-free diet. Don't eat in restaurants Eat only whole foods not processed foods. Eat only food you cook yourself...
  22. Ha ha, that made me laugh! @Christian, You won't get better until you get rid of the foods or other things you are taking in that are making you sick. The immune system reaction takes a couple weeks to cool down, so if you are getting cc every week it is never going to stop. If there are other food intolerances then an elimination diet is the...
  23. In Crohn's they sometime use feeding enteral nutrition through a nose tube. There are pumps that can provide the feeding at a controlled rate while you sleep. That works well for some people. Another thing you can try for H.Pylori is DGL (deglystereninzed licorice).
  24. Maybe you and your Dad can help each other stick to the gluten-free diet and find good things to eat. Doesn't it sound like fun to tell your Dad what he can eat? If you want some ideas for for meals take a look at the breakfast, lunch, and dinner threads in my earlier post. There's a dessert thread in there too. If you like snacks for some strange...
  25. I don't know if you are like me, but when I get glutened it starts with C first for a couple days and then D. So a glutening may be a few days before the D starts. If you end up looking for additional food intolerances an elimination diet is a good way to go.
