ARCHIVED Good Greens Bars - Labeled gluten-free, But Not Really
GFinDC replied to hotincleveland's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for checking on there bars and posting their reply HotinC, I'd have problems with them too since they have oats. I used to do oats every day but after a while on gluten-free they started to cause symptoms. So no more oats for me. Lara bars are a good choice to sub. -

Most of the people in the funny pages don't know how to tipe or spiel wright or someting. They... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed with Questions
GFinDC replied to L.J.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi L. J, Sounds like good thinking there, we can eat lots of other things besides gluten. The tricky thing is they put gluten in many processed foods you wouldn't nessecarily expect it to be in. So it is easier to avoid the processed foods to start. After a while your ability to eat some foods may improve, usually a good length of time to wait is about... -
ARCHIVED Why I Still Eat Bread...
GFinDC replied to SandraLAVixen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Sandra, Try searching for restraunts in your town that serve gluten-free foods. There are usually some around. P.F Chang's, Outback Steakhouse, are a couple chains, there are many more now. Check non-chain restraunts also. There is a certification program called GFRAP that certifies restraunts as gluten-free food providers. Their website lists... -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac Disease And Scared
GFinDC replied to copgirl125's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Copgirl, Here's some tips that might help. Starting out on the gluten-free diet can be upsetting, but there really are lots of foods to eat that don't have gluten in them. After a while eating whole foods you may find your tastes for things has changed and you are as interested in processed foods anymore. While you are healing your digestion can... -

ARCHIVED How Long Does Healing Take! So Frustrated!
GFinDC replied to Maryw88's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Mary, You are right, 1 month gluten-free is not very long. All the time spent gluten light would not stop the auto-immune reaction. Being totally gluten-free should stop it in time though. Your small intestine is around 20 to 22 feet long, so that is a lot of damaged tissue to heal. Making it easy for your gut to digest food is a good idea. You... -
ARCHIVED Petition for Gluten-Free Labeling on White House Website - Celiac.com
GFinDC replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
I think it is worth a try to sign the petition. Numbers are what politics is all about, and so 25,000 signatures is at least a start at showing there is an active voter body interested in the issue. I think the labeling law proposal is an improvement over what we have in the USA now, which is nothing. Many companies voluntarily label foods gluten-free... -

Heck, he beat me all to crap. I had Tetris, and Pac Man, Halo ( cause they speiled it out), and I thot Space Invaders and Pong, but I may have been imagining those ones. I was expecting to see Bio-shock, but didn't catch it if it was there. Geez, this is hard stuff! Game over for me tho, Skeeter is the weener! -
ARCHIVED Update, Survived 2 Weeks On Gluten For Test
GFinDC replied to SandraLAVixen's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Good for you Sandra, your body has given you a pretty darn clear answer on gluten. If it makes you sick don't eat it. Easy advice, but learning to eat gluten-free can take some time. Remember your body trumps the medical tests. The tests can say you are a green man in the moon, but if your body doesn't like gluten, that is all you really need to know... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Want To Tell Your Friends And Family About Living Gluten Free?
GFinDC replied to LisaDances's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
1 of 133 people in the US have celiac, and over 90% don't know it. About 30% of the population has at least one of the genes for celiac disease, and could develop the active disease at any time in their life. You probably know several people with celiac disease who aren't aware they have it.. Diagnosis in the USA takes on average about 9 years. If you... -
ARCHIVED I Don't Understand How My Son Tested - Three Times
GFinDC replied to megsybeth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The usual recommendation is to have a person eat gluten for 6 weeks to 3 months before the endoscopy. Antibodies may or may not build up in the blood stream before the damage is visible in the gut. Most of the antibodies are in the gut, not floating around the blood stream aimlessly. They go where the problem is and that is the gut. Some people never... -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac Disease And Scared
GFinDC replied to copgirl125's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, it gets easier. Eating whole foods is a good way to start gluten-free. There are no labels to read and you know what you are eating. Try some corn tortillas instead of gluten-free bread. Most stores have their gluten-free items in the freezer section, altho Trader Joe's keeps some out on the bread shelf. Chex makes gluten-free cereals, and Betty... -

GFinDC replied to L.J.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey ya LJ, Yep, GFin is fine with me. I am also sometimes called Paul, or hosehead, but anything is fine really. Waiting until the weekend is a good idea. You don't need to be in a hurry to try things except for going gluten-free really, after your testing is done anyway. I used to not try anything new food wise until Friday night, so if I got... -

Hi Sandra, Maybe this article will help with the explaining. Non celiac wheat sensitivity article Open Original Shared Link You can read the abstract for free, but the full article requires a payment. The abstract tells all you need to know for now I think. One thing about the gluten-free diet, if you don't take it seriously and stick with it... -
Sounds good Davina. Be sure and get a copy of your test results in writing. The test results should include the actual tested numbers and the range of acceptable numbers. Some people have C and some people have D with celiac. Then some others have both C+D at different times. Your doc doesn't know what he is talking about.

ARCHIVED Is Celiac A Possibilty?
GFinDC replied to Jen85's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Jen, Celiac can cause nuerolgical damage resulting in what is called gluten ataxia. Gluten ataxia is when the antibodies attack parts of the brain and can cause trouble walking etc. Some people develop leg muscle spasms etc from the nerve damage. Celiac also can cause what are called UBO's (unidentified bright spots) on an MRI of the brain. ... -

ARCHIVED Surprised This Morning With Celiac Diagnosis, Not Sure What To Do
GFinDC replied to rorenchan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, Hubby may have to change his ways some. The biggest problem would be baking or cooking with wheat / gluten flour. The flour is a fine powder and can get airborne and settle on surfaces throughout the area. Or be breathed in.hours later. There are gluten-free rice noodles available, and San-J makes a gluten-free tamari sauce. So he can still eat... -

Hi LJ, Squirmy has all the dope on DH ( dermatits herpetiformis), the skin rash version of celiac disease. So stick around for her reply. Has your doctor tested you for DH? Betaine HCL is a pill that you take to aid digestion. It turns to stomach acid when it dissolves in the stomach. Sometimes people have low stomach acid and that can lead... -
ARCHIVED Question About My Son's Symptoms
GFinDC replied to prairiemamma's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
it definitely could be the recovery from celiac damage making him feel better. That's a good thing! Diagnosis in children is not easy, as their immune systems are not fully developed. But it the doctor's job to do the diagnosis anyway, not yours. That you got him going on gluten-free at such a young age is great. The average time to diagnose celiac... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed with Questions
GFinDC replied to L.J.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You are welcome L.J, I hope you feel better soon. I don't know if it is normal or not to be afraid to eat, I just know I felt that way sometimes myself. When it all comes back out anyway, and somewhat explosively, it can seem like a waste of time. It might help to eat small quantities at a time, and keep water handy to wash things down. It could take... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Measure Progress?
GFinDC replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Diana, I've read that some people get follow up endoscopies done at 6 months or once a year. I never had an endoscopy so I am not going to push that myself, but some people do it. Another thing you could do is follow up blood antibody testing at periodic intervals. A general physical might be worthwhile too, if you can get the results from the doctor...
