ARCHIVED Help And Advice Needed Please?
GFinDC replied to edpa99's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sounds like your kids should be tested for celiac also, and your brother. It is genetic so all first degree relatives should be tested. Having the genes doesn't mean you will develop celiac, but it is possible. -
Healing time varies a lot. There is no one answer that fits everyone. Ii helps to start off with a whole foods diet and keep your meals simple. Grain free may help also.

ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerance Or Just Really Bad Timing/luck
GFinDC replied to RyanIN's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, there is no difference in treatment right now. Staying gluten-free is the only treatment for celiac at the moment. -
Another food intolerance that could be getting you is nightshades, (potato, pepper, tomatoes). Other food intolerances besides gluten are possible and can cause pretty severe symptoms sometimes. If you are eating mostly whole foods and not processed foods, and have a clean environment, then I'd be looking for other food intolerances at this point.

ARCHIVED What Do You Do To Help The Fatigue?
GFinDC replied to birdie22's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, I don't eat much in the way of sugar. So if was really tired I'd try something with some sugar in it. Or some caffiene. Problem with sugar and caffiene is you do crash after a while, so it helps to eat some protein to lessen that affect. I don't do much of either one of those normally though, so it probably has a stronger effect on me than it would... -
I got sick once from sitting in a pizza place with the guy tossing pizza in the air. Throwing flour on the board and then patting it out and tossing the dough up and all that fancy - schmancy pizzza stuff they do. I suppose it was the flour in the air thing that got me. I don't get sick walking through the bakery aisle at a grocery store though. I...

I do mostly whole foods, no bread, but some corn tortillas sometimes. I buy sweet potato chips and prefer the Food Should Taste Good brand. Fruits, nuts, veggie and meats are for me.

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed with Questions
GFinDC replied to L.J.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi LJ, Welcome to the forum! You might get more responses if you start a new thread. Anyhow, prednisone is a serious drug. Weaning off it would be a good idea. Celiac often causes symptoms for us after going gluten-free. Sometimes they can go on for months or years. But it is possible to get better and heal your gut if you follow the suggestions... -
ARCHIVED Looking For Some Advice Please
GFinDC replied to Slr38's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oops, I think there was a little brain flatulence there. The blood tests are almost always right when they are positive for celiac disease. But some of them do have a false negative rate that is an issue. The tests may show you as not having celiac disease, (false negative) but you actually do have it. -
Hi, I don't know about the mercury filling if they are a big issue for you or not. I do have some myself though and I feel pretty good most of the time. Congratulations ? on the porphyria diagnosis, you got a rare one! Hopefully someone with some knowledge on it will show up soon. Now that you have an answer hopefully things will start a turn for...

That's good. lately I've been getting peanut butter at a health food store. They have a grinder so you just flip the switch and fill up a container. Nothing but ground peanuts in it. I can't eat carrots. We can develop intolerances to any food, so it is good to look at everything and consider eliminating the possible culprits.

ARCHIVED Surprised This Morning With Celiac Diagnosis, Not Sure What To Do
GFinDC replied to rorenchan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, 2 slices of wheat bread a day should do it. You don't have to go overboard on the gluten. -
ARCHIVED Looking For Some Advice Please
GFinDC replied to Slr38's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
HI, Medical science hasn't figured out what causes all the symptoms of celiac disease. There are about 300 of them possible and they are all over the body. Nuitirtional deficienices are certainly one of the causes, auto-immune damage is another. Leaky gut issues can also cause symptoms. Thyroid issues are somewhat common also and vascular issues.... -
ARCHIVED Attempting To Learn As Quickly As Possible
GFinDC replied to prairiemamma's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi P-Mama, Digestive enzymes help break down food in your digestive system. Some of them are made by the gallbladder and some are made by the lining of the small intestine. Celiac damage to the small intestine can affect the production of enzymes needed to digest food. Gall bladder issues are also fairly common with celiac disease. The combination... -
ARCHIVED Attempting To Learn As Quickly As Possible
GFinDC replied to prairiemamma's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi P-mama, You might want to check the website of any large chain grocery stores near your corner of the plains. Many of them have gluten free lists now. Some have special sections for gluten-free foods. This site has gluten-free foods available also. Corn tortillas are a cheap option for replacing bread. Look for GMO free/organic ones. Many times... -
ARCHIVED Celiac With Additional Food Allergies
GFinDC replied to Iris court's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Iris, There were some threads about bone broth soup a while back on the forum. It is supposed to be very good for minerals. Might be worth trying. Vitamins you can eat! Meats are a pretty good source of nutrition too. It may take some time for your reactions to settle down. Mine tapered off slowly over a year or so. I used to buy anti-histamines... -
ARCHIVED Why I Still Eat Bread...
GFinDC replied to SandraLAVixen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Sandra, You have a good point about the NCGI and testing. It does seem like there should be some tests that would show damage or something possible. However modern medicine is not there yet. It was only this year that a research project showed that NCGI is a real condition, and not something people were making up. There are no tests for it yet.... -
ARCHIVED Celiac With Additional Food Allergies
GFinDC replied to Iris court's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, Vitamin Shoppe brand or Solgar vitamins may work for you. Not sure about the corn though so be sure to ask them. Allergies are caused by proteins, so starches may be ok. Many times vitamins are held together by starches and corn is often used. Your allergies should be retested after 6 months or so of gluten-free eating. Sometimes people's allergic... -
ARCHIVED If It Isn't Just Gluten, What Is It?
GFinDC replied to Aqua's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
It would be good to get the blood testing for celiac disease done before going gluten-free. The antibodies start dropping off after you go gluten-free and are harder or impossible to detect. The gluten-free diet is not an instant cure though, it can take months (or years) for the GI system to heal and symptoms to go away. In the beginning of the gluten... -
ARCHIVED Surprised This Morning With Celiac Diagnosis, Not Sure What To Do
GFinDC replied to rorenchan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, You are right, it's a good thing you got tested and found out about the celiac disease! Symptoms would only get worse with more time. You should stay on gluten until all the testing is complete though, and then you can start the gluten free diet. In the meantime, you can eat up all the remaining gluten in the house and start learning about how... -
HI, It could be a different food causing your symptoms also. Celiacs tend to develop food intolerances beyond gluten. Have you tried an elimination diet? And eating no processed foods for a while? It might be good to try that as you never know for sure unless you do. It could be a simple food diet change would help. You can check on medicines...

ARCHIVED "it's All In Your Head!"
GFinDC replied to bartfull's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I saw a blurb about the Mayo Clinic recently where they said they have 3,300 doctors and treat 500,000 patients a year. That Works out to about 151 patients for each doctor, each year. If they work 231 days a year (365 minus weekends 104, -10 holidays - 20 vacation days = 231 work days), they would have 1.5 days for each patient. Assuming they consult... -
ARCHIVED Which Art Supplies Have Gluten?
GFinDC replied to mamaupupup's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Check the ingredients, just like with food. I think most art supplies are safe, as far as gluten goes anyway. Wall paper paste may have wheat in it tho, and some glues have wheat also. So just check the ingredients. Art supplies for kids are usually made with less hazardous materials, like no cadmiums etc. But gluten isn't considered hazardous in art... -
ARCHIVED Super Easy Meal Ideas Anyone?
GFinDC replied to KnightRobby's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yes, but it from China, so it is ok. And you take it out of the can, so it isn't canned anymore. OK, another one then. Throw some green beans or peas in a skillett. Add some sliced onion and mushrooms. Fry a few minutes and crack an egg or two on top. Sprinkle with herbs and salt, pepper, psyillium etc. Lid it for a few minutes. Eat. -

It might be worthwhile to check the drugs she is on for side affects. Some drugs can have very strong side affects.
