ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerant, Celiac, Or Something Else?
GFinDC replied to RCrown2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
HI RC, welcome to the site! Yes, it is possible to have negative blood antibody tests results and still have celiac disease. It happens fairly often in fact. The other test the can do is the endoscopy6 and take biopsy samples of the villi lining the small intestine. They check the biopsy samples for damage to the villi. Since celiac causes malaborptoin... -

GFinDC replied to Beatlemania's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Welcome Crissy, There are several younger people on the forum. Hopefully they will stop by. Meanwhile I am happy to give you some reading material to get you started on your gluten-free adventure. I've been on the gluten-free diet over 4 y6ears now and it is just a way of life at this point. It may seem hard when you are starting out new, but it... -
ARCHIVED H. Pylori Treatment And Tummy Troubles
GFinDC replied to SleepyBunny's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Right, mastic gum works, and also DGL (deglysterinzed licorice). I think the DGL is more effective, but I take them both. The antibiotics are killing off your gut bacterial flora. So you can't digest foods as well. Probiotics would help I suppose, but they aren't likely to overcome the whole effect of the antibiotics. They are certainly worth trying... -
Hi Gemme, The immune system reactions can last for weeks. The immune cells get spun up for an attack and don't disappear and go back to the bunker for card playing and drinking in just a day. They stay vigilant for new invaders and ready to fight. So if you are constantly feeding them little bits of gluten they are always going to be active.

ARCHIVED Afraid To Be Turned Away...again
GFinDC replied to Sapphire00's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Right, get the celiac panel done. If your doctor won't prescribe the test get a different doctor who will. The blood panel is easy, they just draw a little blood and send it to a lab for analysis. After the test you can go gluten-free and see if it helps. It may take 3 to 6 months or more to really feel better on the gluten-free diet though. It is not... -

Welcome to the forum Mommabear, It sounds like you may have found the answer to your prayers with celiac disease. Celiac is autoimmune also and can affect any part of the body. ARCHIVED My First Post, New To Intolerance And Still In Distress
GFinDC replied to AnnJay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How about this for a starting list? chicken onions, mushrooms eggs, peas oranges You could include salt and black pepper also, as people rarely have reactions to them. That's 6 plus salt and pepper is 8 foods. I'd skip both the rice and the quinoa. Peas are good because the have a lot of fiber and they go well with other foods. Eggs are a good... -
ARCHIVED Could Going Gluten Free Help Me? (Add)
GFinDC replied to Dandelion123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, Your symptoms could be celiac related. there are 300 or so symptoms of celiac so there is quite a range of them. You could start the gluten-free diet without testing, but it might be worthwhile to look at LabCorp or some other testing source that might fit your budget. It would be no harm to try the gluten-free diet after testing, regardless of... -
ARCHIVED Is Alcohol Dangerous For Celiac
GFinDC replied to BKA's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi BKA, Celiac destroys the villi lining the small intestine that absorb nutrients. That;s why untreated celiacs tend to have vitamin deficiencies. After going on the gluten-free diet and healing the gut, vitamin levels tend to normalize, in theory. Assuming alcohol absorption is affected by villi blunting also. it would be slower in untreated celiacs... -
ARCHIVED My First Post, New To Intolerance And Still In Distress
GFinDC replied to AnnJay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Ann, Yep, I have done them several times. There are lots of threads on the forum about them actually. But the idea is simple. You remove most foods from your diet so you eliminate the confusion factor. Then slowly add one food at a time. Starting out with 5 foods is often recommended. That way you have some variety. You choose your 5 starting... -

Well shoot Loey, if you are in Leesburg you definietley6 need to stop in DC and pay a visit. We can hit the Cupcake factory in Dupont Cirlce for gluten-free cupcakes. Or do something like tour the museums. Some of them have good gluten-free food like the American Indian Museum. At least that's what I've been told. Yay for Loey the ramp climber! ... -
ARCHIVED Testing After Beginning gluten-free Diet?
GFinDC replied to Raining Skittles's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you want the best chance of a reliable result you should start eating gluten again right away. It sounds like that is going to make you pretty miserable though so I am not so sure it is worth it. That's something you have to decide for yourself. The testing is not 100% reliable in the best of cases as false negatives are possible. Your symptoms are... -
ARCHIVED My First Post, New To Intolerance And Still In Distress
GFinDC replied to AnnJay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, The standard testing for celiac is the blood antibodies and then an endoscopy. They should take 5 or so biopsy samples during the endoscopy to have them checked for villi blunting at a lab. None of the testing is useful for detecting celiac if you are already gluten free or gluten lite. There is very limited food intolerance testing available... -
I avoid potato starch. But it all depends on how our body reacts. If it makes you sick, don't eat it. That doesn't always mean forever though. Often people can start eating things later, say 6 months afterwards and be ok. But everyone is different and some foods may not ever work for you. It takes personal experimentation on these things. An elimination...

Good grief Loey, that's not a teacher that's a trasher! It's good you quit her, nobody needs that. If she doesn't understand that teaching is to encourage people to grow she is in the wrong line of work. The Inktense are watercolors so if you have watercolor pencils already you can use those just fine. They sell the Inktense at Dick Blick but you can... -
ARCHIVED Is This Celiac Or Ibd?
GFinDC replied to Momto2girls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
HI, I can't say which she has, celiac or IBD, but I do know that some people with Crohn's follow the gluten-free diet. It seems to help some of them but not all of them. Some people don't follow the gluten-free diet until they have a flare and then they do gluten-free until the flare passes. I don't think that makes sense but it's what they do. It... -
ARCHIVED Diseases Associated With celiac disease
GFinDC replied to DonnaMM's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
HI Donna, I am sorry you didn't get a response to your question. I just kind of stumbled on your post when doing a search. I can't say I have anything helpful to contribute,. Celiacs do have a higher chance of getting other auto-immune conditions though. Celiac Disease Research: Associated Diseases and Disorders -

ARCHIVED Salad Dressings (U.s.)
GFinDC replied to justlisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you are avoiding soy you may need to make your own dressing. It is pretty easy to do by just adding some olive oil and vinager and maybe some lemon juice to a jar with some herbs and salt/pepper and shaking it up good. Let it sit in the refrig for a few hours. If you want it thick add a teaspoon or so of psyillium husks to thicken it. Easy-peasy. -

ARCHIVED Heartburn Remidy Suggestion
GFinDC replied to Bob4962's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
HI, You can always try it I guess. Baking soda shouldn't be a problem gluten wise. I wouldn't advise doing that on a regular, ongoing basis though, as it is nuetralizing the stomach acid. And that can be bad as it lets microbes survive the stomach environment and enter the gut. Peppermint relaxes the sphincter muscles and makes it easier to get the... -
ARCHIVED New And Struggling With Acceptance
GFinDC replied to GoldyLocks's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Goldylocks, Well, that's what you get for eating all the porridge! Those bears didn't do nuthin' to you. Sorry, couldn't resist. It is a big change going gluten-free for most people. Having celiac means you have an incurable autoimmune disease, and that can be an emotional realization. But it is probably the best autoimmune disease you can... -
ARCHIVED An Immune Disorder At The Root Of Autism (Op Ed From Nytimes)
GFinDC replied to Takala's topic in Publications & Publicity
You can keep the parasites. The idea of maternal inflammation causing autism seems reasonable. Maybe there will be some new treatments developed because of it. Hopefully anyhow.
