ARCHIVED Major Sleep Disorders And Celiac
GFinDC replied to citykatmm's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Durn vodka didn't help! Couple shots of that stuff made me feel a little silly but didn't make me sleepy. I got a another 3 hours sleep that night. Doing better as of last night night though, got close to 7 hours in a couple rounds of sleep, not straight through. I figured out my problem was some milk chocolate I ate Sunday night. A little too much casein... -
ARCHIVED A Very Long Road...
GFinDC replied to Jango's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, Yes, it sounds like you could have celiac to me. You could get the gene testing done for celiac genes. That would tell you if you have the genes for celiac, but not if you actually have celiac. Many people have the genes but don't develop the active disease. If you have been off gluten for a while it may be too late for the antibodie testing... -
ARCHIVED Where Are We Getting Gluttoned From?
GFinDC replied to songstressc's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I posted about buying from Bins in another thread too. I suspect I was glutened at low levels over the past month by cc from bins. I had bought some nuts, seeds and cranberries from a local organic store several times (not WF) and have been having trouble sleeping, which is one of my gluten symptoms. I suspect, (with my big suspecting mind), that perhaps... -
ARCHIVED Major Sleep Disorders And Celiac
GFinDC replied to citykatmm's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Not being able to sleep is one of the symptoms I have with both gluten and casein. I used to have trouble sleeping all the time before going gluten-free, which slowly resolved and I was able to sleep like a "normal" person for the first time in years. Recently I started having trouble sleeping again after a couple of accidental glutenings and what I think... -
I had swelling of my feet and ankles for years. I quit eating salt for years but it didn't help the swelling. I have read that swelling can be an allergic reaction, and I think that is what I had. Mine went away after going gluten-free and stopping drinking wine. I believe it was a reaction to yeast or sulfites, although there are some wines that may...

ARCHIVED Casein/lactose Intolerance
GFinDC replied to darkhorse's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, The Lactaid pills do pretty well for the lactose sugar intolerance. They don't help for the casein protein though. Watch out for off-label Lactaid brands as some of them contain gluten. You can get DPP-IV enzymes for the casein. DPP-IV is supposed to help with the casein protein digestion. It pays to shop around as the DPP-IV prices vary a lot... -
ARCHIVED Just Got Back From A Gi Consult, Wtf
GFinDC replied to Nicholasmommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You might find a good doctor listed in the Celiac Disease - Doctors folder. There are celiac clinics at some hospitals also, like the U of Maryland pediatric center's celiac clinic. -
ARCHIVED Lab Results
GFinDC replied to trents's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Trents, I have seen some info about nerve damage due to malabsorbtion. It could be that is something to do with the lack of pain. But they do say some celiacs just don't have GI symptoms too. OK, here is my wild theory of the week for you! I have also read that the antibodies in celiac disease are produced when the gliaden protein (from gluten... -
ARCHIVED Fixed: Additional Sensitivities Or Hidden Gluten
GFinDC replied to krystal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had a reaction to the Baker's Secret chocolate. I am not sure but I think it could be the vanilla in it. Sometimes vanilla is developed using gluten derived alcohols. Rice Dream milk did a number on me too. Has your boyfriend ever had a cold? Did he see the cold virus that made him sick? Celiac is an auto-immune disease, and your immune system... -

GFinDC replied to linweid's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you decide to get the blood test, remember to keep eating gluten until the tests are over. And check with your doc on the antibodie tests they have run. I've read threads here by people who asked for all the tests and then the doctor or lab didn't do them all or they lost the results. then they were stuck with having to do the tests over but had already... -
ARCHIVED Red Skin Rash
GFinDC replied to Nicholasmommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It could be dermatitis herpetiformis, a related condition to celiac disease. There is a subject specific forum on this board on DH where you can find more info. DH is always specific to celiac disease. So if he has DH, he has celiac disease. At least that's what I've read. -
ARCHIVED Getting Diagnosed
GFinDC replied to mikehall117's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My doctor diagnosed me from symptoms, even though my blood test was negative. I had been gluten-free for 4 months prior to testing, so no surprise on the blood test. I had written down my symptoms before seeing him, and the gene test showed celiac genes also. -
ARCHIVED Grinding Your Own
GFinDC replied to quietmorning01's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have an old Hobart grinder. Old and big and heavy too. Once in a while I use it to grind up beans or peas etc. I don't really do baking much myself. I did make some pancakes back when that came out real well, using pea flour. Kind of strange looking to have green pancakes though. One thing I like about the pea flour is I can make pea soup very quickly... -
gluten-free is good, but perhaps you need to look at other food intolerances also? Dairy is one that pops up often on the boards as a problem for people. There may be something besides gluten causing your current issues. Maybe this is a good time to look for another food that you may be reacting too.

ARCHIVED My Sister's Enterolab Results- What Do They Mean For Me?
GFinDC replied to silverfleur's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I seem to remember reading that the heightened risk of intestinal cancer among untreated celiacs was reduced to a normal range after following the gluten-free diet for 5 years. But I have no clue what the risk is for people with gluten sensitivity vs celiac. -
ARCHIVED Issues With Helping Others Understand That celiac disease Isn't A Psychosomatic Disease...
GFinDC replied to Rachel W.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think people tend to dismiss things they don't understand or aren't familiar with. It turns out the world really isn't flat though! I really didn't believe it was possible to be affected by such tiny amounts of gluten at the beginning myself, and I have the disease! So I can understand other people needing some time to adapt their way of thinking. ... -
ARCHIVED "Super Sensitive" Celiacs.....
GFinDC replied to jerseyangel's topic in Super Sensitive People
I think there is something to be gained from a contrary position on discussions at times. If everyone just agreed and went along we would miss out on the ensuing explanations that sometimes are very informative and helpful, and detail things better than the original post also. I think this recent discussion about testing and CC is worthwhile and helpful... -

Here is an older thread on possible other cause of flattening Trents. Other Causes For Flattened/blunting Of Villi?, Severe acid, perhaps https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?showtopic=24969 -
ARCHIVED Tummy Issues Worse Now Being gluten-free
GFinDC replied to foodiegurl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Pre-gluten-free, I used to have pain in my stomach which I attribute to gas. Basically I blew up like a balloon but just didn't float away! I actually had a hard time getting food down because the first bite would cause the gas to go into overdrive and it would be difficult to swallow the next bite. That's the only pain I remember in my stomach, was gas... -
ARCHIVED Don't Know If I Have Celiac Or Not
GFinDC replied to serenity0607's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Trying the diet is a fine idea Serenity! Patience is a virtue as they say and it helps in the beginning. It can take months to learn the things to avoid and start to really feel the positive effects. Some people feel better very quickly but others seem to take a while. I suggest you take a look at the vitamins and medicines you might be taking to verify... -
ARCHIVED De-toxing
GFinDC replied to Salax's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't know about the detoxing part, but I can say that my appetite decreased after being gluten-free for a few months I eat less food than before but haven't lost any weight really. -
ARCHIVED Don't Know If I Have Celiac Or Not
GFinDC replied to serenity0607's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Serenity, If you do the testing after a year on gluten-free diet there is a very good chance the tests won't show anything. So you need to decide if the testing is really important to you. If you want to do the tests you need to be eating gluten for a while before hand. Maybe 6 weeks. The blood tests show antibodie presence and the body stops making... -
ARCHIVED Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Grain Bread
GFinDC replied to SBisglutenfree's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi SB, I tend to think the Ezekial bread is not safe for us. There may be something to what you were told about the proteins being (partly) digested during the sprouting process. The way I read it, enzymes in the grain seed digest the proteins and provide food for the growing plant during germination. The catch to that is, how to tell if they have digested... -
ARCHIVED Crohns Patient New To Celiac
GFinDC replied to redspot321's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Redspot321 I have celiac and I cut out dairy due to lactose intolerance and casein. Lactose is a milk sugar an casein is a milk protein. Either one can cause problems, or both. If you are only lactose intolerant you might do ok on some brands of yogurt. But I don't think you can find any yogurt that doesn't have casein, so if casein is a problem... -
ARCHIVED Do Any Of You Have Refractory Sprue?
GFinDC replied to trents's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You might try looking for posts by GlutenWrangler, I think he has refractory sprue. I am not sure he is on the site a lot though.
