  1. While it is true that once a Celiac, always a Celiac, it is not true that your blood tests or biopsy will always show Celiac. If you go gluten-free, and are faithful, your tests will actually look like you DO NOT have Celiac bc your body has healed. So, my first advice would be to have your sons blood tested to see what his levels are. The biopsy is tricky...
  2. It's me again. Sounds to me like it's a done deal. If you aren't sure, I'd stick with gluten-free until the results come back for sure. However, keep in mind that bc your child is so young, even "slightly elevated" is important bc they are so young and haven't been ingesting gluten for years and years and years to cause serious damage like adults. Another...
  3. Having attended about a dozen birthday parties in the last year (my son was diagnosed last June 3...hard to believe it's been almost a whole year...) I can honestly, without hesitation, say that I now believe that cake is a waste of time for birthdays. I have killed myself a dozen times to be sure my son has a GREAT cupcake to eat at these parties, and each...
  4. My son is 3, and like yours is asymptomatic. Which is good and bad...and won't make trying to enforce gluten-free living during the teen years very easy! Cross-contamination, basically, may or may not cause damage. Not every crumb is going to cause damage to every intestine, some are more sensitive than others, but every crumb added up over time sure will...
  5. Just so everyone knows, you can get the "trial" version of WinZip for free from their site...and it will unzip anything. Bridget
  6. THe gluten is in the "natural flavorings". THat is a VERY common place for gluten to be, actually, so even when a label looks gluten-free but says "natural flavorings" you need to call and find out. Bridget
  7. I agree with celiac3270. I signed on to Glutenfreeda for 2 months, and canceled. I found I had all the information I needed (and then some) for free on the boards, esp. the Delphi board. bridget
  8. Could you use gluten-free corn flakes? Some also use Quinoa flakes. I've never tried them, so I have no idea how they taste or work, but it's a thought.
  9. My son is 3, as you know, and he doesn't get any symptoms. As you said, everyone is different. Some people know right away, others it's a couple hours, and I've even heard others say they have about a day delay.
  10. Vincent, My son is 3 years old, he was diagnosed last June at 2 1/2. Just because there wasn't a lot of damage doesn't mean much...the fact that your son is only 21 months old means there wasn't a lot of time to cause a lot of damage! Being off gluten even for a week for a child that young will make a difference in the biopsy. The lining heals quickly...
  11. Hi Lucy, My son is 3 and is the only celiac disease in the family, just diagnosed last June. So, I know where you are coming from. It breaks my heart to think my son won't be able to have some of the things I desperately want him to as well. My son does no have symptoms either, which makes it that much harder to know if he's been contaminated or not. But...
  12. My son is 3 too! He was diagnosed at 2 1/2 last June with celiac disease, though. Have you had your son tested for a wheat allergy, or are you sure it's all gluten? Here are some GREAT things I've discovered that my son just ADORES: Gluten free playdough: I've tried making it, it's a flop everytime. Invest the $20 in the bucket of assorted colors...
  13. My son is 3 now, 2 1/2 when diagnosed last June. You MUST (I repeat MUST) get Danna Korn's book "Kids with Celiac Disease : A Family Guide to Raising Happy, Healthy, Gluten-Free Children" it is BY FAR the best book out there...I have a copy, both grandma's have copies, and I bought a copy for my daycare provider too. High fat/high calories is NOT a problem...
  14. Just one more positive experience to add to your confidence. My son was 2 1/2 when he had his....and his levels were 250 with below 30 being normal! We did the endoscopy/biopsy and whatta breeze! I wish the whole ordeal had been that easy...the worst part was getting the IV into him, but after that it was a (gluten free) piece of cake!! In fact when he woke...
  15. I also bought the gluten-free playdough from Discount School Supply...it's GREAT!!! Bridget
  16. I was just told, on another board, that artificial flavors/colors aren't bad, but it's the natural flavors/colors that can contain gluten. I get headaches when I have too much artificial sweetener too. I know just how far I can push it (aka, how many diet cokes I can have before I have to stop...) Katie, I have hypothyroid too. Mine came on just after...
  17. Hi Brandi, It's me again (will respond to your email today too) Babysitter: That was a definite no-no with the chicken. You must tell her that unless you have brought it (or approved it) she is NOT to feed it to your son. No way, no how. She will get there, honest, but until you have a grasp on the diet it's not a good idea to let anyone else try...
  18. I've changed collanders, wooden and plastic utensils, and we have a separate butter dish for "his" butter...but other than that everything is the same. Bridget
  19. You sound JUST like me (Right down to the 3 year old being the celiac...mine is too!!) I have my little tantrums all by myself, and then move on. Just like you. Pizza: we LOVE (and I mean LLLOOOOOVVVVEEEEE) the Namaste pizza crust mix. I can't get it locally (yet) but I order it from the Gluten Free Trading Company. The package makes 2 14-15" pizzas...
  20. Lorraine, My son had his biopsy last June at age 2 1/2 and it was, honestly, the easiest part of this whole ordeal!!! We had ours done in an OR. They gave him a little "loopy juice" to drink, then they put in the IV. I rode on the gurney with him to the room, and they put the anesthesia into the IV. It burned when it went in and he screamed, but that...
  21. I use Pamela's Mix and I used a cup of the mix and 2/3 cup of milk. I make chicken and dumplings fairly frequently. There is an AMAZING recipe at www.foodtv.com under 30 Minute Meals for chicken and dumplings that everyone raves about. Bridget
  22. My son was 2 1/2 when he was diagnosed, and at the time I thought his only symptom was sudden weight loss and fatigue. Now, looking back, I realize that it wasn't so "sudden" and that a lot has changed. THis year he had not had NEARLY the amount of colds or wheezing that he did the past 2 winters....he's only had 2 ear infections, which is a record for him...
  23. Do you know what the "normal" ranges are for the blood tests you had run? The reason I ask is that every lab has it's own norms. For instance, in our test for TTG anything over 30 was positive for celiac disease. But I've heard two other labs norms being 20 and 10, so that is important to know. Bridget
  24. WOW!!! That is so great. I have not ventured to the doc to get my sons bloodwork done. I think I may drag it out to the one-year mark. The GI said we should get it tested at 6 months (which would've been December) but the blood draw last June was so traumatic I'm just not ready to go back for more yet. I know he's doing well...the changes physically and personality...
  25. I second the suggestion to get Danna Korn's book. It is AMAZING. I have a copy, both grandmothers have a copy, and I gave a copy to my daycare provider. I know this seems very overwhelming, but it will soon become second nature. You WILL mess up, I promise you, but just remember one "goof" does not undo any progress you have made. So just shrug it off...
