  1. Yes, beer is a definite gluten no-no, for the reasons you stated. But this problem is a sneaky one. I didn't wake up to it because I never had problems with bread, believe it or not. I knew pasta was a problem for me, but because I could eat bread without ill effect I didn't think of flour as being a problem. Good luck with your journey.
  2. I would imagine that biscuits are very akin to the good ole English scone. I haven't tried making these gluten free yet, but I'm going to give it a go.
  3. I think the major reason for self-diagnosis (beyond the obvious inability of the doctors to diagnose us) is that after we have finally figured it out for ourselves it is too late for the official diagnosis.
  4. If you have been gluten free for more than a couple of weeks your blood testing would not be valid. Nor would the small intestine biopsy. I don't blame you for not wanting to go back on gluten if you have been gluten free for a while, because it would really be painful (and probably harmful). If I were you I would do the stool test through Enterolab. ...
  5. Our forum has recently undergone a software "upgrade" (well, I suppose it is ) but in so doing we lost some of the good features of the old software. One of them was that it would have let you know where I am, a feature I found very helpful, and if the poster preferred not to state where they were from you could figure out their general location because...
  6. Hello Kerasita, and welcome to the forum. Many celiac/gluten intolerance symptoms are vague and confusing, for doctors and their patients. Doctors are inclined to dismiss them as irritable bowel syndrome or hypochondria, growing pains, a veritable pantheon of ambiguous diagnoses just to give the patient something to hang their hats on, but nothing that...
  7. This could be one instance where the Aussies can learn from the Kiwis. I am in Christchurch, and that is where I saw the show, and it was on broadcast TV, not on Sky, although of course an American show. I find that almost every week there are gluten free sections in the food columns of magazines and newspapers somewhere that I come across. This was...
  8. Before I knew I was gluten intolerant I had to quit eating pasta because of the digestive problems I had with it. I did not have these problems with bread at the time. I think perhaps the gluten might be denser in pasta than in bread. Just one opinion. I used to note all the athletes who did carb loading before a race with pasta, and thought, how could...
  9. Celiac disease is an autoimmune response of the body to gluten. It is this autoimmune response that causes the damage and requires the gluten free diet. An allergy to wheat is something totally different, and can cause an anaphylatic type response (the body going into shock) or a contact dermatitis from even touching gluten. It is something totally different...
  10. Hi Gretchen: You will also find hemp milk and coconut milk ice creams at Whole Foods, Both very good, and you *may* also find there a spread made by Earth Balance that is soy free. But this one is not widely carried (Trader Joe's did not carry it) and I eventually found it at a health food store. It is marked on the front label "Soy free". It is really...
  11. Ah yes, bodily functions, the universal language So universal even the Canucks speak it Is it his ship that's stuck or his hiney? ... Anyways, if he hails from Nova Scotia his hiney should be tough enough, unless he usually drags it off to Brazil every winter Let's see, Nova Scotia, ship's captain....fisherman??? Or Brazil, ship's...
  12. Hi, and welcome to the forum. I am not sure how much help I can be, but I will try. First, you do not say how long you have been gluten free. Have you had a period of eating gluten free when everything was all right, and then suddenly this happened? This would be important to know. If you are a freshly minted gluten free eater, sometimes there is...
  13. I have several, but I choose Crusty kalamata olive and rosemary bread: Open Original Shared Link Thanks to Rachelle for posting this.
  14. Bwah Ha Ha Ha (finger-flipping emoticon)!! Our little farewell get together, everyone wanted to know who made the delicious macaroon cake Is it gluten free??? Bwah Ha Ha Ha. Only one little slice left to bring home The Kiwi word for this is "skiting".
  15. Life's a BEACH. You already got one!
  16. Ditto, to all previous posters. Once you've found the bright side, the gloomy side is not the place to be. Be a take charge kind of guy, and "don't let the bastards get you down." Stay warm and sunny.
  17. I wuz thinking of you, Nik, when on our TV weather they said that the cold was about to descend on London and the south-east, Like it hadn't been cold there before last night ???? Also saw a space shot of the Chilly Isles and the whole thing was white, from bow to stern Yep, plenty of hot toddies and snuggling on order. And it's good Alzey is...
  18. I have never had headaches or any neuro problems. I developed muscle weakness and joint pain later but that was because I had developed psoriatic arthritis (and the skin problems and itching that goes with it). For me, the kind of reaction you are talking about came from lactose; half an hour after frozen yogurt or ice cream I would be in the toilet....
  19. I don't know, it may not even be gluten. When you first go gluten free your gut is in a very fragile state and often has problems with things that would not normally be a problem. You really have to expect some unexpected reactions especially in the first couple of weeks. It could be that your digestive system did not like the quinoa--gluten free grains...
  20. Here's a first suggestion. Think of gluten as rat poison for your body. Every time you think of eating gluten, think "Rat Poison" and what effects that might have on your body. This is somewhat equivalent of what gluten is doing to you. It's amazing how quickly your can tune your brain to be revolted by the site of gluten You can still have carbs...
  21. Your body is making a tremendous adjustment when withdrawing from the gluten (which is toxic to you) and many people report a withdrawal symptom for some time. There is also the issue of other nutrients your body may be lacking through improper absorption of nutrients in the gut. Have you checked that all your vitamin and mineral levels are up to snuff...
  22. Well, don't say I didn't warn you In post #10 Sorry, I just couldn't resist
  23. Unfortunately, it's not just your digestive tract that can be damaged by gluten. You can be doing neurological damage, disrupting your thyroid function, setting in motion a whole cascade of other autoimmune diseases. So the amount of damage to your intestinal tract or the severity of your GI symptoms really has little to do with the mischief that gluten...
  24. A company named Enterolab does genetic stool testing by mail. A quick google should find lots of information here and on the web about Enterolab.
  25. I think you will find a pretty unanimous yes to that question. One of the first pieces of advice to newbies here is to get a dedicated toaster because you will got cross-contamination from gluten crumbs in a shared toaster. Looks like a new toaster is on your horizon
