  1. 1. Gassiness, bloating, passing gas, constipation/diarrhea 2. Have a niece who is coeliac, sister who is gluten intolerant, decided to go gluten free 3. Passing gas all the time, worried about finding toilets, fainting from the gas pressure when I was constipated (a bit embarrassing when you are out in public). 4. Finding restaurants that serve...
  2. I only ever took one sublingual B12. The next day broke out in a red, itchy, blotchy rash all over my face, which didn't go away. Eventually I had to treat it with erythromycin--doc said it looked like adult onset acne. Someone here suggested it could have been a reaction to the mannitol. I won't do that any more.
  3. Thank you so much, Momma Goose and HappyGirl. That sounds like an indispensable little book. It's on its way. Neroli
  4. Hi: I was quite excited to read about celiac3270's list, but then understand it is out of date and he hasn't been around for a while. If there is anyone who has a copy of his list, could you please send it to justneroli@hotmail.com. I would be most appreciative. While it may be out of date, it is a good starting point. I am coming back to U.S. ...
  5. I had wondered about using coconut oil, Rice Guy--does it change the flavor at all? I do occasionally use it in cooking. <quote>bakingbarb Posted Today, 06:23 AM I have been meaning to try the Spectrum but wondering about costs. HA like gluten-free flours don't cost more dry.gif Right now I use Crisco which is transfat free but still not...
  6. Well, it looks like I have been following the right trail! I have been hot on the heels of a product called Palm Oil Spread which I have heard of but never yet laid eyes on. All the organic stores I have been to have said they are unable to get it from their suppliers. Maybe it has something to do with palm oil being used to make biofuels, as I recently...
  7. I bought a Carole Fenster and a Bette Hagman cookbook from Amazon and, apart from the difficulty of sourcing Sorghum and T'eff flours here, have difficulty with shortening. A lot of their recipes call for the use of both butter and shortening. What do you use? Crisco?? We have something similar here called Kremelta, but I have always been afraid of these...

    ARCHIVED New Rheumatologist

I've reluctantly decided that a gluten-free diet is not going to control my psoriatic arthritis. Have been off all RA meds since August and symptoms are getting too much to handle. It seems like straight RA responds better to gluten-free than psoriatic arthritis. The thought of returning to my old rheumy was just too much for me. I had the recommendation...
  9. Hi Colleen, and hello from ChCh. I am a bin inn shopper too, but they don't have sorghum Most down here haven't even heard of it. I have only had buckwheat pancakes, but had no problem with them. However, I did find out after becoming gluten free (five months) that I am extremely sensitive to soy also. Sorry to have to mention this because it seems...
  10. Welcome, and chin up. I understand all too well that feeling of loneliness; even when people try to understand they really have no idea what you are talking about. And when you have a doctor so understanding that he thinks if "you just get married" your symptoms will go away. Talk about a joke of a physician! Sometimes it seems such a lonely journey...
  11. Hi all: Just a quick update on the red itchy rash that was driving me nuts. I decided to do an elimination diet of sorts--soy, dairy (the rest like cheese and yogurt) and corn. I was really careful about the soy part because I had been diagnosed as sensitive to it years before with the skin test, but had never actually been bothered by it (or eaten...
  12. [quote I do find it just as hard to avoid as gluten though, actually at this point harder. It seems anything that doesn't have gluten has soy.
  13. [quote I have never had outward signs of DH meaning blisters etc, but I have noticed alot of itching at work compared to days off. Tonight I feel like my arms and anywhere I touched are on fire. It is 3:00 AM here and I have not gotten any sleep b/c of it. Can this be DH even with out blisters or rash?
  14. Yeah, a Kiwi who lived in CA for almost 40 years, so really more Californian than Kiwi, some of my NZ friends tell me. I have become bilingual and spell both ways as the mood strikes. Anyway, should be in Nevada by June, health permitting, although it seems I might need to come there for my health!! Lots of people mention metal toxicity. Without reading...
  15. Thank you both for your responses. Darn, just as my tomatoes and green peppers are bearing fruit nicely you are asking (suggesting) that I give them up. And I have two nice eggplant in the refrigerator. Maybe there is a clue, the nightshades are my favourite family!! I guess I will have to make and freeze big batches of ratatouille, freeze whole...
  16. I would appreciate any input on the following results: (Brief background: psoriatic arthritis x 4yrs; all arthritis med-free since Aug. 07; gluten free Nov.07; soy and dairy free March 1, 08. Problems with badly swelling ankles before stopping Plaquenil in Aug. 07, also arthritis broke through the med. at that time. Swollen ankles only slowly improved...
  17. Not only are most of us skeptics, most of us have worn the label at some point in our sagas. You will probably find that most of us have also been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Check for me on both. I did initially believe in fibromyalgia at one point (not any more) but never IBS. It is a very lazy diagnosis. It's almost as bad as saying, "You have a...
  18. [ I have also heard (and tried myself) that applesauce/stewed apples are very easy on the gut and have a low intolerance level..
  19. Don't know about across the ditch, but down here we have a product called Lite Licks with good flavour and texture that practically all types of allergies can eat, being dairy free, wheat free, etc. Unfortunately, it contains soy so I can no longer have it Neroli
  20. [ <quote> So here are my 2 questions: (1) is it really possible that I could have experienced such tremendous improvement in such a short period of time, or is this some figment of my imagination or reverse hypochondria? and (2) more important: unlike the other newbie on this forum, I have no problem whatsoever with giving up gluten -- It's...
  21. So what we ended up doing was CRP, liver function, CBC, arthritis panel, iron studies, free T3 and T4, thyroid antibodies, TSH, calcium, magnesium and maybe something else I forgot!
  22. Okay, I just thought of two more--iron and ferritin, perhaps calcium.
  23. Help!! Despite all the wonderful support and help I have received on this marvelous forum, I am still feeling a bit like I am wandering alone in the desert looking for the next watering hole. I have been gluten-free for four months now; swore off scotch because it seemed to be making me itch and giving me a red itchy rash; it was either that or...
  24. But is fibromyalgia really a disease, or is it just another of those wastebasket diagnoses like IBS when they don't know what you've really got?
