  1. Fiddle-Faddle and Bea: Thank you both for your suggestions for avoiding the dreaded ortho. I had never heard of either of these things and don't know if physios know about iontophoresis here. Also, since I don't "do" corticosteroids at all well, I think the E-Zorb sounds like the best thing for me to try. My blood calcium levels are good but a DEXA...

    ARCHIVED Dietician

My personal feeling is it depends on your degree of nutritional sophistication. If you have the ability to detect gluten in foods (your can learn a lot about that here) and know what constitutes a balanced diet with enough carbs, protein and good quality fats, you can probably do it on your own. But I would recommend at some point quite soon consulting...
  3. Reminds me of the first time I was seen by an orthopedist in the hospital the morning after my head-on accident, when he said to me "I am Dr. "Incompetent," I have looked at your x-rays and frankly I am not impressed." Needless to say, I was not impressed with him either, but he convinced me that my right ankle was just sprained (foot jammed hard on the...
  4. Me too (age 17-29)--well except for the chronic bronchitis and shortness of breath
  5. Me too, about the same time, 12 hrs Auckland to San Fran. I booked on-line and Air New Zealand had a gluten-free option in special meal requests, so I checked that. But for the hanging around times I am taking Leda and Bee-Nutritious Bars and fruit and cheese and rice crackers. Coming back I guess I will substitute Lara Bars.
  6. I was self-diagnosed at 67. Had always had some symptoms but they became much worse after a head-on auto accident at 49. People kept asking me if I had recovered from my accident and I said yes, but I wanted to say no because I didnt really feel that I ever did, and then I suffered a mycoplasma infection which made me really ill. By that time I had quit...
  7. I concur completely with the others. Whilst we are merrily glutening ourselves with abandon, and suffering but don't know why, our systems are used to having to cope and do the best they can. Usually, with whatever level of suffering we have (and for each of us it is very different), we are at least functioning. But once we rid our body of the offender...
  8. Had lunch in town yesterday with a friend I hadn't seen since going gluten-free. She was a little bemused by my conversation with the person at the counter about what was in the gluten-free warm salad. I made sure there was no tofu (they are primarily a veggie/seafood restaurant that have a number of gluten-free dishes, most of which are curries which are...
  9. Hi Deb and gfpaperdoll: I know what you mean about the water. I grew up with mountains but then we moved to the beach and I preferred that. When we came back to NZ five years ago we built a house overlooking the harbour, and now when I look out my windows I see nothing but water and mountain. It is wonderful and has kept my sanity through this sorry...
  10. Hi Bea: Since you mentioned New Zealand (I remember you were once here) and corn syrup, I assume your post was directed to me. I did once test mildy intolerant of corn via skin prick test and have never actively sought corn in my diet although have never been afraid of occasional corn content. Maybe I should be. My NP suggested dandelion root and...
  11. Oh my God! This post should probably be in that thread rather than here. So that metallic taste I had in my mouth for all those years was the galvanic response to the different metals. This went on for about 20 years! And yes, during this time I clenched my teeth something fierce, something I had never done before and no longer do. That's amazing! ...
  12. Thanks so much for your detailed response, gfpaperdoll. There is a lot to digest in there. I did do dairy free for about three weeks (maybe not long enough?) and I have been avoiding most nightshades although find potatoes hard--but do love sweet potatoes. I guess no OJ means no oranges either; darn about that and I never, never eat oatmeal--that...
  13. I Have not been gene-tested (nor blood-tested nor scoped), not realising the implications of not doing so, that is not being aware of all the other possibilities of damage in the body other than the gluten, and just concentrating on eliminating that. Now I am beginning to wonder... I have had a constant edema problem since my twenties, much worse now...
  14. Sounds llke I am the granny around here--am 68 and it was not until late last year that the penny finally dropped. Guess you could call me a slow learner. My gastro problems have pretty much resolved on the diet; any remaining except for accidental glutening do not bother me too much. However, my resulting psoriatic arthritis remains intractable and I am...
  15. I found that a lot of so-called gluten-free "foods", and even a lot of regular proessed foods contain loads of soy which is as bad for me as gluten. The usual advice here is to initially avoid soy, casein and corn also, then later you can challenge these back in one at a time.
  16. Ouch! I threw out my Aveeno because of the oat extract. The lotion she used had oat extract in it, which is deadly for me. I use Dove and/or Neutrogena.
  17. Gassiness, bloating, nausea, fatigue--just feel crappy for 4-5 days. Last accidental glutening at the beauty salon (well, they try) when I was offered a complimentary hand massage. I didn't wake up enough to check the ingredients of the lotion until she had done my right hand. Drat. The cost of being gluten-free is eternal vigilance!
  18. What great news!! Lara bars here I come!
  19. I have always had a worthless immune system from when I was a small child. Caught everything going, and a cold always turned into a secondary infection, mainly lungs. Now I have an auto-immune disease that being gluten-free is not have any effect on (psoriatic arthritis) so I have to continue the immuno-suppressant drugs. I asked my rheumatologist if I...
  20. My reactions to lactose came before I recognized the gluten problems. While the gluten made me gassy and bloated, the lactose (milk, cream, ice cream, frozen yogurt --not really yogurt at all) would case ED within an hour or two. For a while after going gluten-free I cut out cheese, sour cream and yogurt as well, but have added them back in without...
  21. Tagging along on your topic here, I hope you don't mind, missy'smom. I am interested in gluten-free and soy-free protein bar-type snacks to take in the car when we are in the U.S. I hear people talking about Lara bars all the time but would guess they probably have soy, as most do. Do any of you soy-intolerant-also folks have any recommendations for...
  22. My PCP 18 years ago tried to convince me I needed to see a psychiatrist. I politely declined and gave up talking to doctors about these digestive problems. Silly me! My current PCP wanted to know if I was depressed. I told her you know me better than that, I am not a depressive. I said my level of depression is appropriate for my level of suffering...
  23. Hey, a pity party now and again is okay, especially if it makes you feel better. But wait a a minute, you are only 24 and have years of possible baby-making ahead of you. And you are leading such a busy life right now I don't know how you have time to date. Concentrate on your studies and raising your son, and when you find a job and have more time...
