ARCHIVED Gluten-free Prescriptions (birth- Control)*lee-lee* replied to Grace Maureen's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications i've been taking Zovia for years now (used to be called Demulen but i think that name brand is discontinued) and haven't had a problem. it's a generic brand so it should be pretty inexpensive if you have a prescription plan. it's about $30 without insurance.

i need some tips on hard-boiling eggs. i usually boil 8 or 10 at a time - i use hot tap water and boil rapidly for about 10-15 minutes. then i usually let the eggs sit in the hot water for another 15-20 minutes and then drain the water and put the eggs in the fridge. half the time the eggs are very easy to peel but the rest of the time there is a layer...

ARCHIVED Should I Postpone Kindergarten For My Small celiac disease Child?*lee-lee* replied to jesslynn555's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs i don't have children of my own but my first thought is NOT to hold him back. he's always going to be the kid who has to eat differently than the other kids, why segregate him more by holding him back thus making him a year older than his peers? plus, he'll go through a growth spurt eventually and then he'll be the same size as all the other kids. i...

ARCHIVED Does The Biopsy Hurt?*lee-lee* replied to 1morething's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms i've never had any kind of surgery or anything so i was pretty nervous before my endoscopy. i didn't feel or remember a thing. honestly, the worst part for me was that darn oxygen thing shoved in my nostrils! i was given a sedative via IV and dozed off within minutes. next thing i knew, i was being woken up by the nurse in recovery. i was a bit groggy...

good question Deb...luckily i talked to the reception site yesterday and i can eat everything (with the exception of the salad - she wasn't sure if they mix croutons in so i'll have to check)! the woman even made sure the kitchen staff wouldn't use the same tongs to plate the beef and the breaded chicken.

i have gluten dreams a few times a month. usually i'll dream that i'm eating something i shouldn't and realize after a few bites and then freak out wondering how sick i'll be. then when i wake up, it was like it was so real and i'm very relieved to know i didn't consume gluten and i'm fine. i think it's because i'm very paranoid that i'm going to get...

ARCHIVED Ma Uno's Now Have gluten-free Pizza!*lee-lee* replied to mrg8610's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants i noticed pizza is now listed on Uno's gluten-free online menu so i emailed them to confirm the locations it's available at - because after seeing it advertised on their menu i was curious if it had been rolled out nationwide already. this is the response i got: We are testing this gluten free pizza in a limited area. We need to make sure that the pizza...

ARCHIVED Target Brand Multi-vitamins*lee-lee* posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications the Target brand multi-vitamin for women (similar to One-A-Days for Women) are on sale this week, making the price a lot less than the branded kind. When i was there last week i asked the pharmacist if he knew if they contained gluten and he mumbled something stupid about how the drug companies aren't including gluten in drugs anymore. i just nodded, put...

ARCHIVED Rice Chex*lee-lee* replied to msmini14's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications i just went to stock up on Rice Chex and the shelf was empty...surprise surprise! the price said $1.66 so i went to the customer service desk to inquire how long the sale is going on for. (i also asked for a raincheck but was told they don't offer them.) silly me to think they'd be able to help me...this is Walmart we're talking about. no one could...

ARCHIVED Omg...i Am So Mad I Could Spit Gluten Free Nails!*lee-lee* replied to strawberrygm's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs can you go to another doctor? you can take all your daughters test results and see what someone else says. my GI would not officially diagnose me but my regular doctor was like "if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck". that's an awesome program...what i could do with $200 in gluten-free foods each month!

***UPDATE*** so it turns out we're going to the wedding. my boyfriend had just declined the invite and let it be. but the groom was insulted that he wasn't going to attend and asked why. my boyfriend explained that he wasn't going to go without me and apparently i WAS invited. (and from the sounds of it, we should have known that...how we would have...

my hair seems to be falling out at alarming rates too, since i've gone gluten-free (about 4 months ago). interestingly enough, it's also grown very fast since then too so i'm not sure if it falls out easier because it's longer? i'm planning on chopping quite a bit off but i just haven't gotten around to it yet. i'm curious to see what my hair will...

ARCHIVED Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies*lee-lee* replied to RissaRoo's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips oh wow, these cookies are sooooooo good!! i used 2 1/4 cups of Pamela's baking mix instead of the white rice flour, tapioca starch, xantham gum, baking power, baking soda and salt. they are so fluffy and delicious! oh yum!

ARCHIVED Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies*lee-lee* replied to RissaRoo's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips (disclaimer, if this is a totally stupid question: i've never baked gluten-free before so this recipe will be my first attempt.) can i use Pamela's baking mix instead of the combination of rice flour, tapioca starch and xantham gum? i'm going out shopping this afternoon in hopes to find everything i need but i'm not sure if i'll be able to find all...

DUH. i get the idiot of the day award. i can't believe i didn't think of a plain hamburger. i was just saying the other day how i was craving a good restaurant burger (minus the bun, of course!)

what's the best thing to order when eating out if you don't have time to consult the menu/manager in advance? my town has it's fair share of chain restaurants in addition to some local places too. none of the chains offer gluten-free menus. my boyfriends extended family is coming into town next week and we're planning lunch out. his mom knows all...

ARCHIVED Need Advice- Should I Mention Something To Teachers?*lee-lee* replied to HAK1031's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease i agree with everyone else...definitely let you teachers know. in NY (where i went to HS), we have state mandated final exams and no one is allowed to leave the room until 2 hours have passed, even if you've completed your test. they allow exceptions but normally a proctor follows you to the restroom. point being...there are always exceptions! a note...

it was likely the fries that made you sick but you could also have picked up some gluten from cross contamination on the grill where they cooked your burger, if they cooked something gluten-y before and didn't clean it.

serious question...is it rude to assume he would bring a guest? i say no way, only the name(s) on the invitation are invited. he thinks "and guest" is assumed even if it's not indicated. is there a hard and fast rule? (it doesn't really matter at this point...we're not going either way, but i'm curious what protocol is these days?)

i had mono 11 years ago, when i was in high school. you definitely have to keep up your fluids. water, juice, tea, whatever works. my throat got so bad they had to admit me to the hospital overnight (on New Years Eve!) to hydrate me because i hadn't eaten or drank anything for days. my throat hurt soooooo bad. i was miserable. the hospital made...

ARCHIVED What Are You Reading?*lee-lee* replied to mslee's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease i have the Dummies book too...Living Gluten-Free for Dummies, i think is the exact title. i also found it helpful in understanding all this. (if i could convince my sister to read it, i'd give it to her because i think she has Celiac too but she's choosing to ignore all things gluten-free...)
