I used to vomit a lot before I knew I had celiac. People always thought I was some kind of horrible drunk, or had food poisoning. They tend to add wheat flour to teff because it keeps the cost down. I got sick from Ethiopian that said it was gluten free too. I haven't vomited since, but my celiac son does. Bioenzymes, and food easy on the stomach like...

ARCHIVED How I Know I Got Glutened...
dilettantesteph replied to mamaesq's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sorry to have to tell you this, but it lasts about a week and gets worse for the first few days. (At least with me.) -
ARCHIVED What To Do When Poisened?

Those cultures like what is in yogurt are helpful too. -
ARCHIVED Glutened-how Do You All Function?
dilettantesteph replied to alephknot's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What gets me is all the products that say that they are gluten free that still make me sick. I check everything I eat on line first to see if anyone else has reported problems. I only add one thing at a time, try only a little bit the first time. Stay alert to symptoms and quit the new food right away if I notice anything. Sometimes I really want to... -
ARCHIVED Life Insuance Frustration
dilettantesteph replied to Jaimepsalm63's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for mentioning this. I am self diagnosed and haven't told my doctor yet. Maybe I won't. -
ARCHIVED So Mad!
dilettantesteph replied to LuvMoosic4life's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
When I researched it, it seemed like you had to eat gluten for 4 months to get an accurate test. To that I would say no way. You don't have to listen to everything the doctor says. At some point they may develop a test that will be accurate without having to eat gluten. I am waiting for that. Doctors are supposed to heal, not make us feel worse.... -

ARCHIVED Behavior Got Worse Since Going gluten-free!
dilettantesteph replied to ABQturkey's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I can relate when it comes to my behavior! I was on such a mood roller coaster at first. After about 8 months things started evening out. My son, 11, diagnosed at the same time, not so much. However, when he gets accidental gluten contamination that is the first indication of a problem. I think neuraltransmitter levels are normalizing. -
ARCHIVED How Far Back Does Gluten Exposure Set Them?
dilettantesteph replied to sugarsue's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
How far it sets you back depends on dose and sensitivity, but it shouldn't be like starting over. After about 7 months I kind of got the hang of it with my son. Once he did a gluten challenge for 3 days and that set him back a month or two, but a few chips shouldn't be too bad. It takes a long time to figure out all those unexpected gluten sources. Don... -
ARCHIVED My Unthinking Husband
dilettantesteph replied to dilettantesteph's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Below, I didn't mean to imply that you might be a complete idiot. I should have known better because I have gotten sick from inhaling flour before, when I was cleaning out my cupboards and I kept it all at arms length. I knew that breathing a bit into my nose makes me sick. You hadn't found that out yet. I was glad of the confirmation. I am sorry that... -
ARCHIVED My Unthinking Husband
dilettantesteph replied to dilettantesteph's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thank you for your kind replies. It wasn't that bad of a reaction, and I am a lot better now. And I wouldn't have put my nose in it if it hadn't been in the gluten free part of the kitchen. I'm not a COMPLETE idiot. -
ARCHIVED My Unthinking Husband
dilettantesteph replied to dilettantesteph's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That kind of reaction isn't very helpful. I don't think that fatty diarrhea, blurred vision, mental confusion and arthritis could be caused by a psycho-somatic reaction, but maybe so. Inhaled gluten gets into the stomach via the villa that line the esphagus. Inhaled flour bothers lots of people, why not inhaled bread crumbs? -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Fish Food?
dilettantesteph replied to henny's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I came across the same problem. Now my teenage daughter takes care of the fish. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Vs. Gluten Sensitivity
dilettantesteph replied to happygirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Here is my theory. I think that celiac disease is actually a family of diseases all of which include gluten intolerance. The fact that different genes are responsible for it is consistent with that. Different forms of the disease have difference levels of tolerance to gluten, different symptoms, and differences in test results. I don't think that there... -
ARCHIVED Bloated Tummy...
dilettantesteph replied to River Faerie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If those were the same nut thins that I tried, they aren't made in a dedicated facility and I couldn't eat them without getting sick. I can no longer remember the brand name of the ones I couldn't eat. -
ARCHIVED Bloated Tummy...
dilettantesteph replied to River Faerie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The first while in the gluten free diet you find that you get more sensitive to small amounts of gluten. I kept having to cut more trace amounts. I think I finally got them all now and am doing well except for accidental glutening. My stomach is smaller now than it has been in years (after 10 months gluten free), even though I haven't lost any weight.... -
We have a mixed kitchen. Part is gluten free and part isn't. My non celiac daughter has to do all the gluten dishes and my celiac son and I do the rest. My stupid husband put a gluten dish in the gluten free area. There was a dish with bread crumbs in it. I thought to myself, what could my son have eaten that looks so much like bread crumbs? So, I stupidly...

or could it be that the tests aren't perfect and that you can have celiac disease and still test negative for the illness? -
ARCHIVED School Problems
dilettantesteph replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
At one point my son's school was poisoning him with gluten and then threatening me with child protective services when I didn't send him in sick. I suggest getting your doctor to write directions on office stationary. You could even write it for the doctors office to copy from. They don't ignore instructions as easily if they come directly from the... -
ARCHIVED Advice On 10 Year Old Glutening Herself
dilettantesteph replied to tazallie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I didn't read through all the replies, as I am in a hurry, but I think I can offer a different perspective. My son was diagnosed by diet alone. The doctor wanted tests, but I didn't understand the importance of testing before going gluten free and messed things up. My son was 10 too. I figure he should be responsible for his own diet at his age. We decided... -
ARCHIVED She Ate Fruit Loops Today
dilettantesteph replied to sugarsue's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son was 10 when diagnosed and threw up and felt awful for months before being diagnosed, so he understands the diet better. Nevertheless, let me suggest that you take kids shopping and let them pick out all the gluten free treats you can: Kininikinnick donuts are really good. Also ice cream, cookies, candy, pizza, soda. When you have something else... -
ARCHIVED Living In A World Of Wheat
dilettantesteph replied to mslee's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I know you have to ingest it, but you can ingest it by breathing it. It happened to me when I through out all our flour. It gets stuck in the nose hairs. Then there is a passage of hairs from the nose down to the stomach. Stuff travels down there to get eliminated. When it is inhaled gluten it gets into our stomach that way. It can take awhile because... -
After 10 months gluten free I am wearing a pair of pants that I haven't worn in years. I haven't lost any weight or anything, it is just that my waist is smaller from the bloated belly going away. So, there is hope! It isn't all the way back, and later in the day I may have to change my pants. I was going to try them on one more time and then give them...

ARCHIVED Diagnosed By A Gluten Free Diet Alone?
dilettantesteph replied to dizzygrinch's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you have a variety of symptoms which go away when you start a gluten free diet, and a lot of them could not be caused by allergy, then they come back when you eat gluten, and they go away again when you stop, how could that be anything but celiac disease? -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed By A Gluten Free Diet Alone?
dilettantesteph replied to dizzygrinch's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I hope they develop a test like that soon. I wouldn't go back on gluten for testing either. I heard some research that could lead to one, but I don't think one exists now.
