  1. In a restaurant or potluck dinner, I say I have some very serious food allergies. That gets peoples' attention and they can understand it. With my family or someone who may have the same condition, I do say celiac disease because they already don't understand it. They need to hear the seriousness of the word "disease" to take my limitations seriously...
  2. The point about the fiber and vitamins tweeked my memory. The only time I remember my son being constipated and painfully so, was when we started vitamins with iron. I realized what it was and went back to the vitamins without so much iron. Then he was fine again. Now, know that he does not have celiac disease. He did have sugery for pyloric stenosis...
  3. The sublingual B12 is the methyl kind. I find this online or at my local health food store. Walmart carries the other kind but we need the methyl kind that hits the digestion where we need it. It's a big help to me.
  4. Welcome to the forum. We're glad you are here. A glutening can take days for some to recover from. Are you taking sublingual B12? It helps me some when I've eaten something I shouldn't. Could have been the sugar but I find I don't react that well to ham either. You will feel better soon. Just make sure you're not getting contaminated at home...
  5. My friend has been suffering with extremely dry eyes and air starvation for some years. Now it's so bad, she cannot drive or watch TV. She can no longer read. Today I read an article regarding vitamin A defiency in those with celiac disease. It mentioned that the eyes can literaly dry up and it can affect the mucous membranes of the lungs. This...
  6. I had the worst glutening to date from eating Stevia two days in a row. It was stevia in packets and I stupidly didn't read the pkge. It was filled with wheat!! But now I buy NOW Certified Organic Stevia Extract and have no problems with it. I get it at my local health food store.
  7. I do not find the gluten-free diet to tasteless in any way. You can spice up your food. I eat well seasoned food at every meal! Maybe you could tell us what you're eating that seems boring and we can offer suggestions on how to spice it up!! For me, eating too many alternate grains really puts the weight on. They also would sit like a stone in...
  8. I'm going to bet that if you eliminate his allergens, his vomitting will show a marked improvement. Start off with very simple whole foods that you prepare yourself, meat, vegetables, fruits, rice and beans. Of course nothing he tested postive to. Clean out your spice cabinet, throwing out anything that contains gluten and his other allergens and any...
  9. I'm sorry you're having a migraine. My friend's son with migraines had to increase his magnesium and add feverfew and B6. Also B12 sublinguals are very helpful to me to feel better. It sounds like you might be going through gluten withdrawals. Just hang in there, it will get better, I promise! Eat as many safe foods as your body wants right now.
  10. I wonder if adding a hard boiled egg to your nightly food would help. For me, turkey just doesn't stick to my ribs like beef or eggs. I also sometimes add a handful of nuts late in the evening.
  11. Each person is different and their recovery is different too. I know that's not what you want to hear, you'd like a cut and dry answer but that's not the nature of our disease. You will have to wait and see. Some people gain and some lose. The pain may take awhile to clear up. Just one day I realized it wasn't there any more. For me the stomach issues...
  12. Do you think your blood sugar gets low at about that time? Have you tried eating protein before bed? As for the cravings, I don't crave much as long as my blood sugar levels are good. If they start getting low, I'm like a hungry wolf pacing and pacing for food. I mostly want sugary carbs then. I've been increasing my dietary fats and that has helped...
  13. You're right, you may not be able to absorb them now. There's no way of knowing for sure but you are probably deficiant because you cannot absorb them now. My friend's daughter had to re-test(don't ask) and they had her eat one piece of bread a day. Her endoscopy was positive.
  14. I don't think a person with celiac disease that doesn't maintane the diet for 30 or 40 years has the same good health as one who follows the diet. Isn't the figure that following the diet lengthens your life span by 10 years? Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'm 51 and I feel better than I have for 20 years. I do slip now and then but I'm doing well...
  15. My advice to newbies is always the same; start simply. I think that's especially true in a household with small children. You are already busy and preoccupied and now you have to learn a whole new way of life. I say start first eating whole foods that you prepare yourself, meat, vegetables, fruits, rice, potatoes and beans. Before cooking anything, go...
  16. The alternate grain foods really back me up. I don't eat too much of any grains now and I feel better than ever. Corn seems to work best for me but I don't eat much, maybe 3-4 servings a week. I used to eat grains every day and with almost each meal. I've never had a problem with constipation till then. Maybe let her be grain free for part of every day...
  17. You can get help with the blood work if you post the results here along with the variants for the lab that did the testing. Are your kids having problems or are they just being tested as a precaution?
  18. Someone once wrote this good advice. She said she wrote down seven meals that her family frequently ate. Then she determined how to make them gluten-free. She was surprised because some of them were already gluten-free or close to it. Once she mastered making those gluten-free, and cooked them several times, then she added other dishes and so on. ...
  19. I feel like I'm the opposite. When glutened I retain water like a whale, I'm all bloated and swollen. My skin even hurts from the swelling. I was on diuretics for years for this but when I went gluten-free, I no longer needed them.
  20. ghostcat you say you went back to eating meat to help with the GI. That's all we're saying. When eating gluten free, your body seems to need the protein in meat. I know there are vegetarians out there who eat gluten free but there are plenty of them having problems with it like one poster I noticed yesterday who couldn't lose weight. This topic started...
  21. I'm so sorry for your loss. Having felt a sudden loss also, I know you are so right to appreciate your loved ones when you can. We don't know when our time will come so let those you care about know it.
  22. I'm not knowledgable enough about tests to answer that for you. You are still eating gluten so just get tested again. Order the correct tests. Then ask for your own copy of the tests and post them here. If you are gluten intolerant and do not have celiac disease, the tests will all be negative but you will still need a gluten-free diet.
  23. Congrats!! The 30th is a big milestone. It's cool that his health has held steady enough to see you through. Obviously you have a good thing going!!
  24. I find I still get cramping when eating alternate grains. I went on a very low carb diet and didn't eat any grains for a few weeks. Suddenly, no more cramps! Now I eat a little but I really feel best when I restrict the alternate grains. I do best with corn but many others cannot tolerate it. I still think the food diary with noted symptoms can help...
  25. Most of that pain went away when I went on the gluten-free diet. The rest is now gone because I started a very low carb doet. Seems like some of the alternate flours do it to me. I tolerate corn about the best.
