  1. Hi Linda, The genetic test can't give you a diagnosis of celiac disease, however DQ2 puts you at high risk for it. DQ8 is also considered a celiac gene, but you certainly don't need to have both of them... in fact, that can make the reaction more severe. I have DQ8, but no official diagnosis. The conclusion I came to is that if you know you have one...
  2. One of the symptoms of hypochlorhydria is sensitivity (in the stomach) to supplements. I've gone from taking 250mg of Betaine HCl with each meal to as much as 850mg with each meal (I vary the dose based on how much protein I'm eating) and have never had heartburn. It's really helping... I don't have the feeling that food is sitting in my stomach like a...
  3. Xantham gum is derived from corn So are a lot of the "natural flavors." I didn't notice that any specific ingredient was a problem for me (xantham gum, cornstarch, corn syrup, citric acid, etc...), but when I got really serious about cutting all of those derivatives out of my diet I did notice a difference. Here's the advice that people gave me: ...
  4. Hi Ashley, My symptoms were in my intestines instead of my stomach... cramps, bloating, constipation, and gas. I felt a lot better after I took gluten out of my diet. Then I discovered that corn is a problem too. Corn is tricky to eliminate (it's in about 90% of processed foods), but I feel SO much better now. Unless I slip up, I never have those...
  5. Sometimes, if you restrict your calories too much, your body thinks you're starving... and it starts storing every possible calorie as fat. Could you tell us more about what your diet is like? What do you typically eat for meals and how many meals do you eat each day?
  6. Even if you can get your immune system to stop producing thyroid antibodies (which I agree is possible) that might not mean your problem is solved. A good analogy is this... in autoimmune disorders like PBC and AIH your liver can get so damaged that you need a transplant. If you're on the transplant list, I don't think a gluten-free diet is going to solve...
  7. Sometimes people find IgG testing useful... mostly in cases where you suspect multiple foods and don't know where to start first. The problem is that the results can depend on what foods you're eating and the state of your intestines. For example, you could have a severe intolerance to wheat, but if you've already cut it out of your diet you probably won...
  8. This is a very new area of research. Here's an article that came out just last month: https://www.celiac.com/articles/21713/1/Tis...ents/Page1.html I would be cautious about saying that thyroid disorders "cause" heart disease or can be "cured" by a gluten-free diet. Hyperthyroidism CAN cause abnormal heart rhythms. Hypothyroidism CAN cause high cholesterol...
  9. Unfortunately, there's no single test to diagnose autoimmune disorders... or even a single type of doctor to go to! For example, rheumatologists deal with RA and SLE. I saw an ENT yesterday who was willing to run tests for Sjogren's Syndrome, but he said he doesn't treat it... if I'm positive, I'll need a referral to another doctor (a rheumatologist). ...
  10. Wow... what a good suggestion! You know, this whole time I've been thinking, "This woman (Lucy) sounds a lot like my sister." Drama queen, lack of understanding about social cues... hmmm.... Like you say... I don't know if my sister has Asperger's, but I bet reading about it will give me some ideas on how to interact with her better.
  11. I don't know how much you know about autoimmune disorders... The normal function of the immune system is to create antibodies in reponse to foreign objects (like viruses and bacteria). This is extremely important. However... in autoimmune disorders, your body goes overboard and starts attacking healthy tissue. When the villi in your intestines are damaged...
  12. You're eating quite a lot of refined carbohydrates... I bet you would feel better if you ate more fruits and vegetables. I know they're not as convenient, but your health is on the line! Also... have you thought about Sjogren's syndrome? The classic symptoms are dry eyes and dry mouth, but it can also dry out the rest of your body and cause GI problems...
  13. Celiac disease is not an allergy. It's an autoimmune reaction. Gluten causes your body to produce antibodies (EMA, Ttg) that destroy your intestines. It's currently the only autoimmune disorder that can be prevented or "cured" by avoiding the trigger (although your body will always be able to start producing antibodies again if you go back to eating gluten...
  14. The intestines are not the only place where digestion can go wrong... if you're not making enough saliva (xerostemia) or stomach acid (hypochlorhydria), it creates a perfect environment for bacteria like h. pylori and candida to flourish. Supplements like Betaine HCl and digestive enzymes can help. Also... what is the rest of your diet like? A lot of...
  15. In the first few weeks of pregnancy, levels of hcg should double every 2-3 days. If it doesn't, that can be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy or impending miscarriage... but not always. Here's a little more information: Open Original Shared Link Unfortunately, if the numbers are not rising properly there's nothing you can do. It's not like progesterone...
  16. When I went to college, there was this really great coffee shop across the street. I was going over there quite a bit with a friend (at least once a week) until we realized... we couldn't afford it! So we switched to having tea at her dorm. At least we could still get together and chat. At first I didn't really like tea. A lot of people limit themselves...
  17. I was also a MAJOR foodie before I started having food intolerance problems. The first thing I cut out of my diet was dairy... it was a miracle to me that I was able to do that. I grew up in Wisconsin! I made some mistakes the first few weeks. There's this co-op in my town that has really good deli food. I went over there on a Sunday to buy some groceries...
  18. I had terrible problems with acne as a teenager. I also have rosacea... and until recently I had pimples around my jawline that refused to go away. The GFCFMF diet has helped tremendously! When I saw my parents last month they said my skin hasn't looked this good since before I hit puberty I've been using coconut oil on my face as a moisturizer....
  19. Hi Janelle, Welcome to the group... I think you have found the right place! My son is a LOT like your daughter. By the time he was six weeks old he was crying all the time (colic), hardly sleeping, projectile vomiting, and having green diarrhea with streaks of blood. I read about casein intolerance on the Internet and all the symptoms fit, so...
  20. I think AliB's point is a really good one. If your sister-in-law is still having problems after five years on the gluten-free diet (assuming she hasn't been cheating)... she could really benefit from exploring other (additional) solutions. Corn, dairy, and soy are hard for a lot of people to digest. She could also have another autoimmune disorder on top...
  21. I'm on the fence about soy... I've read evidence both for and against it. I don't think it's a very healthy food unless you eat it raw or fermented (like miso). I've started avoiding all processed foods. I've also read about broccoli and cabbage being goitrogenic. Apparently, they're fine if you eat them cooked instead of raw. But really... isn't...
  22. Itching with no rash sounds like something else. For example (I'm not saying this is your problem, just throwing out a suggestion)... if your liver and gallbladder are really stressed, they can start leaking bile salts. Very itchy! When was the last time you had a CBC? Bumps on your scalp could be a reaction to gluten or something else in your shampoo...
  23. Thanks for getting back to me! My son is ten months old... I suspect he'll be breastfeeding for at least another year. Last month I had a biopsy for an itchy (gluten-enhanced) rash that I thought was DH, but the results came back as "acute dermatitis"... I found a definition that said it's "a rash caused by inflammation somewhere else in the body...
  24. There are lots of nutritious, non-dairy foods that have plenty of calories... nuts, nut butters, seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, etc...), avocado, coconut, olives... One ounce of almonds has more than 500 calories. Forget about the "low fat" hype. Healthy fats will actually raise your good cholesterol. Unhealthy fats (animal-based saturated fat, soybean oil...
  25. I was in excellent health at that age... the best physical health of my life. IMO, 7th grade just SUCKS. Most people are going through puberty. Hormonal imbalances can make people pretty crazy and mean I went to school for 22 years and I have to say that 7th grade was definitely the worst. Ugh. I would NOT like to go through that again. It's natural...
