  1. Sorry if this gets too off-topic but...I once had a Doberman pup that ate my hair scrunchie. I put it down and turned around and in 10 seconds he had swallowed the whole thing. Whole! I thought "nah! he couldn't have eaten that huge thing!" but the next day...sure enough...he proved it. I was shocked! Dobies are never in it for the flavor, that...
  2. Foster Farms is good. They don't inject or coat with anything. Costco sells giant bags of frozen Foster Farms chicken. The Safeway brand is just coated in salt water. Those are ok too. I avoid anything coated or injected with broth after getting sick from eating our Thanksgiving turkey. If they're not going to disclose what's in the broth on the...
  3. OH but you can have pizza and beer on your birthday. There are gluten-free versions of both. And I know for a fact that the pizza is awesome! (I don't drink beer so I have no input on that.) I ordered some Garlic Jim's pizza the other day that was absolutely amazing! Tasted like the real thing. No difference at all. And it has a greasy crust and the...
  4. Actually, waiting about 6 weeks is enough if you use regular hair dye. Your hair doesn't have to be virgin to start using henna; you just have to give the chemical dye a chance to wash out a lot. If you're concerned, you can test a small sample of your hair with the henna first to see if it reacts (but cut the sample off first...no need to risk doing it...
  5. I use Light Mountain Henna, with honey to enhance the red. It's all natural, and permanent because I leave it on for 2 hours (I wrap my hair with saran wrap to keep it from drying out.) They have different colors and you can add things like coffee, teas, and spices to adjust the hues. Just don't use black. It contains a toxic chemical.
  6. In the past I have had trouble with rice as well as gluten (it makes me sleepy and I feel 'weird') but recently have tried a couple of rice-based pizzas with success. So, I want to try plain rice again but am unsure which brands are known to be gluten-free and safe. Cheaper is better, but I want to get it right, so I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks...
  7. The "Narcolepsy gene" that Stanford discovered is DQB1*0602. I have read that DQB1*0603 is associated with gluten intolerance, and it is only one nucleotide different. Have you heard that? Because they did a study where 28% of Narcoleptics they screened had the *0603 variant and there are quite a few of us that are symptom free on a gluten-free diet. ...
  8. Boy I sure hope so because I have one attached to my faucet that I use all the time!
  9. I recently ordered a Garlic Jim's gluten-free pizza and it was absolutely amazing! To say I loved it would be an understatement. I will be dining at Picazzo's in Portland on Friday the 13th and I hope to have good luck there. Their online gluten-free menu was making me drool. I'm glad most people here like their pizzas.
  10. I don't get sick until the next day, sometimes not bad until the 2nd day after being glutened. Could it have been something you ate the day before?
  11. I've only ever taken Armour and it works great. I just had my first thyroid test (a very comprehensive one) since starting the medication last fall and everything is extremely normal. I do miss eating as soon as I wake up in the morning, tho. That half hour is sometimes the only chance I get to eat breakfast. I need a better routine. lol
  12. Oops, I left out genetic drift. Sorry!
  13. It depends on how sensitive you are. I had to buy new pans or use tin foil all the time. It seems silly ... you'd think a clean pan is clean, and I scoffed when I read people replaced all their cookware. But over Christmas I was at my sister's and we made beet chips on her clean, unscratched, non-stick cookie sheets. She is not gluten-free but even the...
  14. Any disease can do this to people. It totally happened to me when my Narcolepsy got bad. I couldn't go out, I was a zombie when I did, and after turning invitations down, people stopped asking, even when I was fine. But eventually I was able to make new friends and find a new boyfriend who is understanding. It's easier to filter out the baddies when you...
  15. Someone already has. There is a neuropeptide that we produce normally in the hypothalamus called Hypocretin (or Orexin, depending on whether you're sleep researchers or food researchers...it was discovered by both groups at the same time and given 2 names.) It is a key player in sleep regulation, and the lack of it is thought to cause Narcolepsy. There...
  16. Count me in for the non-diagnosis. I wouldn't be able to tolerate a challenge. But that's ok because my doctors take my gluten intolerance seriously even without a formal diagnosis.
  17. I got my tax return yesterday, so I did what I promised myself I'd do and went to the Enterolab site to order my HLA test. I'm just testing myself for starters and might test my son at a later date depending on the results of this one. I'm so excited! I can't wait to see the results. It can't be negative...there's too much that runs in our family. I...
  18. Yeah it does kind of sound like they're saying "Sorry, Lawry's Salt is only for normal people." It is poorly worded and comes across as quite the verbal 'finger'. It is extremely odd to me that they just throw their hands in the air and say "we dunno!" Any company that doesn't know what's in their products makes me really suspicious. But again, as someone...
  19. My doctor gave me some of this today so I'm trying it. She says it also helps control sugar cravings and that they give it to their diabetics to help with that. I'm all for less sugar cravings! I'll let you know how it works after I've been on it for awhile.
  20. I like to make Bob's Red Mill Chocolate Cake from the mix and make my own chocolate butter cream frosting from the recipe on the back of the Ghiradelli cocoa power (baking cocoa) can. But I only use 1 cup of sugar because that's really all it needs. The best part is, there's no rice in any part of this cake (I'm rice intolerant, too, lucky me.)
  21. I agree. It sounds like they treat Celiac like a classic allergy, which you can be desensitized to. But that just doesn't work for autoimmune disorders. I once met a naturopath (not my Dr.) that said I should really focus not on controlling my narcolepsy symptoms, but on the hope that I could actually make them go away for good. I just laughed and thought...
  22. Hey thanks for this info. I'm going to see my Dr. tomorrow and will ask her about this. I'm hyper sensitive and would love anything that can help in recovery.
  23. Thanks for your replies. My reaction was very mild and over by noon today. I know my boyfriend wasn't trying to hurt me or anything. I just have to be so careful and I wasn't paying attention. It was totally my fault. I just got emotional about it. I know accidents will happen but I hate them so much I really go out of my way to avoid them. I don...
  24. me too, mushroom, me too...so "atypical" eh?
