ARCHIVED Will Body Fat Decrease When On Gluten-free Diet?!
chasbari replied to Vlo1980's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I wouldn't exactly call it a blessing in disguise. I have always been involved in some way, shape or form with working out and fitness. As I got more ill over the years I couldn't tolerate exercise anymore and my rheumatoid arthritis made just moving next to impossible. Finally dx'd for celiac in February and have gone on a paleo diet. I wasn't really aware... -
ARCHIVED Is Joint Pain Associated With Celiac?
chasbari replied to kimy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was diagnosed with pretty severe rheumatoid arthritis before I was ever diagnosed with celiac. What you describe sounds like the classic gelling up of the joints I experience when in a RA flare. Once diagnosed for celiac and treating the proper way with very strict control of a gluten-free, grains free, soy free diet as outlined in the paleo diet (similar... -
ARCHIVED Rotten Teeth!
chasbari replied to weluvgators's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I brush, floss, gargle..obsess and get called a liar by hygienists all the time. My wife barely touches a toothbrush and they tell me I should be more like her. I lost my baby teeth in pieces and parts, have had countless root canals and yet no dentist had a clue as to celiac being a possible cause. Now that I am gluten-free the three teeth I was expecting... -
ARCHIVED Increased Urination With Gluten Reaction
chasbari replied to scorpionco's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was linking this to my leaky gut in the early stages of my diagnosis and recovery as it would increase radically after meals. I was also very thirsty before I went gluten free but would not have to go much even when drinking large amounts of water if it was before a meal. As soon as I would eat though I would go into overtime with trips to the bathroom... -
ARCHIVED Need Help To Gain Weight On gluten-free Diet
chasbari replied to JBaby's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have found that the first three months of gluten-free were the absolute worst as to hunger, weight loss and leaky gut. I think it was largely due to the fact that for the first time in a long time my body was able to begin the healing process and I had to be careful not to overdo anything. After losing 35 pounds I didn't necessarily have to lose things... -
ARCHIVED Is There A Withdrawal Period?
chasbari replied to TotalKnowledge's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I not only experienced the moods but also went through a period of extreme hunger as there was little I could tolerate at first. I just had a realization the other day that I am far less starved all the time now and, unless I really overdo things like I did yesterday, my appetite has really regulated to near normal. It gets better. Especially if you really... -
I was initially diagnosed with RA 5 years before the celiac diagnosis. Since going paleo to manage my celiac my RA is slowly but surely lessening. I have had to stay away from all alternate grains and dairy in the early stages due to leaky gut issues but have been adjusting to the diet and am healing. My rheumatologist refuses to believe that I even have...

ARCHIVED Lifelong Mystery Solved..
chasbari replied to samcarter's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It's very easy to believe that this is a side benefit. In spite of the short term difficulties of adapting to the diet and the weight loss I have been experiencing, the positive effects on the little stuff (or not so little stuff as in your case!) far outweigh any short term adaptation hassles. Glad to hear about it! -
ARCHIVED How Strict "gluten-free Diet"?
chasbari replied to mellowyellowmushroom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I found, initially, that I couldn't tolerate any "safe" grains like corn and rice. Soy was a big source of my mistaking it for cross contamination. Dairy is on the forbidden list for now as well. I am now getting to the point where I can tolerate exercise although I have to watch overdoing it as I have a proverbially small "gas tank".. at least for now. Much... -
I was chronically dry and was having problems with dysphonia. I am a voice teacher so this was a real problem. I couldn't drink enough water. Turns out my leaky gut was really causing much of the trouble. Now that I am gluten-free and paleo as well I only drink a few little sips of water to take my supplements of D, Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc. Otherwise...

ARCHIVED I Can't Maintain My Weight
chasbari replied to j.m.zimmerman's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yep, what they all have said. Especially about how difficult it is, initially, to maintain any weight while the gut is healing. Low calorie, high nutritional density foods are great for getting better but not for keeping the weight on. I lost so much body fat in the first few months and it was compounded by the fact that I was now able to actually do things... -
ARCHIVED Delicate Subject - Anyone Else?
chasbari replied to Rebecca's mom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I can only agree with you and add... Viva brussel sprouts.. (You might need to keep him away from them....) if you get my drift. I, too, hope my family doesn't read this! -
ARCHIVED Cleansing/detoxing Phase?
chasbari replied to latteda's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Detoxing as in major withdrawal from glutens and temptation to eat it anyway and starving all the time? yep! -
ARCHIVED Anyone With Rheumatoid Arthritis?
chasbari replied to kimis's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Major rheumatoid arthritis. I was first diagnosed with that before being diagnosed with celiac. My RA titers were very high and I was experiencing much joint pain and gelling of the feet, hands, shoulders, knees, and more depending on how bad the flare was at that particular moment. Major mobility problems that kept getting worse. Very discouraging as I have... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Treatment Research
chasbari replied to Mollifier's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Negative blood test, very positive biopsy and rheumatoid arthritis so bad it was immobilizing me. The gluten-free diet in paleo form has set me free in a very short amount of time. I am still losing weight for the time being but I have not felt better in decades. The thought of doing something to modify my immune system for the "convenience" of being able... -
ARCHIVED Do You Get Canker Sores Or Chapped Lips?
chasbari replied to PeachBlossoms's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Inquiring minds want to know.. what amino acid? Yes, lots of canker sores growing up and dry eyes and chapped lips still. CS -
ARCHIVED I Need Serious Help! -please!
chasbari replied to Lexi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Are you sure your pain meds are gluten free? -
ARCHIVED Angel Food Ministries Allergen Free Box
chasbari replied to TrillumHunter's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Very disappointed in the box of meat we got from them as they all have additives. Good value if none of those things bother you but it was the pork chops that gave me my first official glutening. The pre made meals have been great for my elderly parents though and they are good value-wise. -
ARCHIVED I Don't Think I'm Crazy, But I'm Open To The Possibility.
chasbari replied to samhill's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I can relate to so much of your story and for years was willing to succumb to the doctors' judgement that I was, indeed, crazy. I figured they must be right and, after all, I can get pretty creative... Still, it was a major step to stand up for myself regardless of others' opinions. I now know definitively that I have celiac and discovered what a real glutening... -
ARCHIVED Food Poisoning Or Glutened?
chasbari replied to foodiegurl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know that within a short amount of time after going gluten-free I began to experience difficulties with soy, corn and dairy that I had never had a problem with. I had my first real glutening Monday and can say that it is far more painful than anything I had experienced prior to going gluten-free and I was a steadfast gluten eater for most of my 48 years... -
ARCHIVED Question About Raw Honey
chasbari replied to julirama723's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I live in a non gluten free home with five gluten eaters and myself. My wife bakes and cooks all the time. We have a small kitchen and are careful about shared spaces. I just had my first issue with glutening since going gluten-free in November of 2008 yesterday and it came from my carelessly forgetting about what I had read on a label some months ago. There... -
ARCHIVED All Is Clear! Amazing!
chasbari replied to anonymical7's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
An unfortunate addendum to my original post. This morning I find myself wiped out from my first definitive accidental glutening since beginning gluten-free in November. I had some episodes that I thought were CC or something that ended up either being leaky gut reactions to corn, soy or too much physical work too close to eating. Once I went on paleo I have... -
ARCHIVED Help Understanding My Gluten Reaction
chasbari replied to JEHS's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I can only speculate but here's my thinking. Before you were diagnosed and went on the diet you were probably at a level of coping that allowed you to get through the day. Obviously something led you to go about getting diagnosed. Once on the diet you probably started noticing more energy or some sort of change. I know the most difficult thing for me now... -
ARCHIVED All Is Clear! Amazing!
chasbari replied to anonymical7's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can share much of your story as I could barely make it through teaching a half hour lesson at a time back in November. Against all advice I went off glutens. I really felt I had no choice. I was dying and could barely move or function any more. I was willing to live with the consequences should I not have been able to get a proper diagnosis. I understand... -
