  1. You can do it! My husband quit and restarted smoking three times before he quit 6 years ago for good. I am confident it is for good as when he decided to quit that last time he said "I am ready to quit"...the other times he was "trying to quit". He has never felt so good...he did put on some weight at first...but our young sons at the time had a motto...
  2. Open Original Shared Link check out this video from UCSD's Celiac Center. Dr. Harmon explains Celiac Testing very well...he is the second doctor to speak, but the whole video is very helpful to understand Celiac Disease. Good Luck to you!
  3. smoothie (fruit fresh or frozen, spinach, yogurt plain or fruit, banana, ice if i didn't use frozen fruit) and eggs with spinach, cream cheese and whatever meat is left over from dinners or gluten-free bagel with avocado I never was hungry for breakfast before going gluten-free...now I am ready to eat in the am and eat less throughout the...
  4. My blood test barely indicated Celiac -- my Primary said to make sure you ask for someone that WANTS a Celiac case when making the appointment with GI. Turns out we have a Celiac Center here at UCSD so I ended up with a Celiac Specialist -- he listened to my symptoms and decided to go forward with the endo even tho my blood was only slightly indicating Celiac...
  5. I found out I couldn't tolerate OJ about a year ago...couldn't believe it because I love it...I've switched to AJ and some other mixed juices. Has anyone been able to go back to OJ after healing with gluten-free? Thanks!
  6. Hang in there...maybe try to speak with a nutritionist..should be one on campus somewhere....may give you some easy ideas to bring balance to your gluten free eating??? Take care and don't beat yourself up...I can't imagine anyone on this site hasn't had extreme frustration during the healing process. Take a bath, paint your toes, be good to yourself...
  7. oops...i think i'm supposed to call her a nutritionist it was a very helpful visit at this stage (day 37) as i had a list of questions that she was able to answer for me along with some great suggestions i do find it curious that a when you are diagnosed with a disease that the only treatment is diet that medical insurance does not cover a nutritionist...
  8. my bloating got very bad at week 3-4 but has improved a bit the past few days. i couldn't understand because we are being very careful...went to dietician yesterday and found out that i haven't been eating enough grains and the grains we celiacs eat are not fortified with vitamins like the wheat we americans consume by the ton. Anyway she thought my bloating...
  9. Dear Greg- I do not think your reaction bizarre or strange...I'd say it's a healthy one. I am a 7 year cancer survivor and thank God for every day given. I have just recently been diagnosed Celiac after years of many unexplained illnesses...my mind is at peace finally...Celiac is truly the best news I could have received as I feared the return of cancer...
  10. I live in San Diego. Trader Joe's, Henry's and Keil's for gluten-free groceries...lots of choice. Open Original Shared Link for restaurant's...the website is great...i'm newly gluten-free so haven't eaten out much, but we check this website before we venture out.
  11. Will do and I can tell you that my Celiac Doctor - we are fortunate to live in San Diego where there is a Celiac Center at the Univ of Calif, San Diego - cautioned me against going gluten free before having the endoscopy so we would have confirmation of Celiac. As I understand it...it is not possible to determine Celiac stricktly from blood tests. Here...
  12. Of course you may ask. I was tested for celiac because i have been very sick for about a year. Unexplained bloating, extreme heat intolerance and a host of other conditions -- not many sinus issues over the years. Anyway...the celiac blood test in early March was about my 50th blood test in a year and the only one that came back indicating a problem...
  13. My 15 and a half year old son has these same symptoms and has for about three years...docs have treated like asthma (never seemed like asthma to me) and then gerd...his celiac panel is still out being tested as I was diagnosed just a month ago. He is currently still eating some gluten, although our home is quickly turning gluten-free for all instead of...
  14. HAPPY BIRTHDAY EVERYONE>>>It's my son's birthday today and I was determined to make a good gluten-free birthday cake as I've been gluten-free for about a month and everyone has been working very hard to change our home. I didn't think it would taste as good as his past bday cakes...BOY WAS I WRONG! I started with Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Chocolate...
  15. I just bought some fluorescent green dot stickers that we are using to mark gluten free/safe items (we keep separate pnut butter etc.). We did clear the pantry of most gluten items. Our family is adjusting fairly well and while my husband is very supportive and loves to cook (everyone in our family cooks and we are all learning to make all gluten free meals...
  16. Thanks everyone and to Wayne for starting this conversation. I have had a horrible week as the arthritis symptoms have become worse than ever before. Not sure if it is the increase of nightshades (a word I didn't even know 5 days ago) or just my body beginning to heal and adjust to actually digesting nutrients? At any rate, this thread and these forums...
  17. That is tough...if I may ask -- how long have you been gluten, soy and nightshade free? many thanks
  18. Dairy has not increased...although still in my diet. Soy probably the same. Not sure if it is better to cut all these out and then add back. Had been thinking I'd start by removing the gluten, then removing other things if my health doesn't improve. Thanks for the note...have a wonderful weekend. -Lisa
  19. So 3 months ago I had never heard of Celiac and have now been diagnosed and gluten-free for just about a month. My whole family has done pretty well transitioning to my new diet and except for a few blunders I think we know what I need to do to stay gluten-free. The past weeks have increased the pain/stiffness in all of my joints. Where I used to get...

    ARCHIVED Help!

Hello...I'm a newbie to this site as I was diagnosed celiac within the month. What caught my eye was someone's signature/tagline. While I was recently dx'd...my husband's side has both sjogren's and a grand or two with alzheimer's (sp?) 62 years? I'm 43 and recently diagnosed--good news for me after many years of unexplained illnesses. Do you have...
  22. Everything I have read on this and other sites is MOST celiacs take at least 3 to 6 months with some healing quicker. Some have a drastic recovery all of a sudden after months of frustration. I have been surprised out how badly a small amount accidental gluten effected me...I have been sick all day today after adding a small amount of turkey breast from...
  23. Your wife sounds similar to me...I have been gluten-free for 24 days...at first I was hoping for a vast improvement. This site and its members helped me to understand that it is different for everyone...I am now hoping to see more signs of healing within three months, but am prepared to wait longer. I do feel very strong from crack of dawn to about 3...
  24. I'm three weeks gluten-free and do feel slightly better during the day, but I still bloat and get very achy joints every evening. I am fairly certain I've glutened myself twice and those reactions were different and happened 30-45 minutes after I ate. Last night I didn't bloat until 5:45pm -- normally this happens between 3 and 4 so I am encouraged that...
  25. Great advise...thanks everyone. New to gluten-free and while I have very loving family and friends that are trying to help...I find that I too prefer to show up having already eaten a little something so that I don't have to worry about my stomach growling through the meal. I am letting everyone know -- they don't have to plan the entire meal...
