ARCHIVED Celiac And Gerd
GottaSki replied to Crash69's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My 15 year old's symptoms were GERD, Reflux, lung and nasal issues for about six or seven years. Docs tried meds, nothing helped. All have improved in the past months...not all the way, but enough that it has convinced him of the need to stay gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Tyson Frozen Chicken Strips
GottaSki replied to MKat's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Broth and flavorings can contain gluten and not be disclosed. I contact manufacturer when in doubt! We learned the flavoring, spice, modified food starch (if it's source is not listed) lesson the hard way...when in doubt - CHECK or risk an accidental glutnening. -
ARCHIVED Symptoms- Diagnose Me!
GottaSki replied to Robyn1216's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Definitely start with blood test, minimally tTG IgA, Iron, Vit D, etc...there are celiac panels, but they don't always include vitamin deficiency. Blood tests and even biopsy are not exact. Celiac is extremely difficult to diagnose in many cases. But if you go gluten-free first you do lose the opportunity to run the tests without having to go back... -
ARCHIVED Recent gluten-free List From Heinz

Thanks for sharing...the smart ones was news! We cook everything, but sure would be nice to have a few more emergency items in the freeze. -
ARCHIVED Lost On What To Feed My Little One...
GottaSki replied to RobynJ's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We use a regular toaster for gluten items and our toaster oven for gluten-free - each on opposite sides of the kitchen -- we changed to this system after about a month gluten-free as this seemed easier for us. If you are careful your toaster oven with foil lining should be safe. -

Check all cereals Chex - some flavors still contain barley malt -- Orig Rice Crispies also contain barley malt -- I've found most of the cereals in our grocery store isle contain malt. -

ARCHIVED Tyson Frozen Chicken Strips
GottaSki replied to MKat's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We've had problems with frozen chicken with broth...I'd call or email if you can't find info online. Email responses can take about 24-48 hours. -

Do you have a Trader Joe's near you? If so, they have many gluten-free selections including frozen waffles and pancakes...don't forget to check that your maple syrup is gluten-free..that was one of the last items we found gluten in our diet -- so bummer we went back to eating pure maple syrup - yum! ARCHIVED Symptomatic And Blood Work Today
GottaSki replied to homemaker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would wait for the blood test results. Both blood tests and biopsy often have false negative results. Personally my tTG IgA was borderline, but the endo biopsy confirmed Celiac which did help us understand the necessity of becoming gluten-free. It is different for everyone. You already have some understanding of Celiac because of your sister. I had... -
ARCHIVED 2 Year Old Son - All The Symptoms, No Diagnosis, What To Do Next?
GottaSki replied to RobynJ's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Was just about to respond....I second all that ang1e0251 posted. I have a nearly two year old grandson that was the first to benefit from my celiac dx. He had already had bad reactions with other foods so they went gluten-free while I was being diagnosed. He improved very quickly -- good news is that young children usually improve quickly. Good Luck... -
ARCHIVED What Are You Thoughts About This
GottaSki replied to twe0708's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Try not to worry...you may not have severe reactions...I went undx'd for 43 years and was much more ill than my 15 year old son. I now have severe reactions, but he only feels tired with accidental glutening. Some Celiacs have little or no reaction. Good Luck to you! -
ARCHIVED What Are You Thoughts About This
GottaSki replied to twe0708's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Doctor was definitely wrong! During my transition to gluten free it seemed reasonable that if I accidentally consumed gluten it wouldn't be a big deal as prior to gluten-free I had consumed major amounts of gluten. Boy was I wrong! You'll find many posts in this forum regarding people becoming extremely sensitive once gluten-free. My body attacks... -
Replacing good old gold fish sounds tough -- my kids are past the gold fish stage, but they sure were handy for them when they were younger. Currently we buy Nut-thins, several flavors and Rice Crackers 8 pack (4 cheese/4 seasame) from Costco - the cheese seam to go quicker than the seasame!

ARCHIVED Deli Meats
GottaSki replied to collins146's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Oh and another fun one...at Henry's at the deli counter the butcher said "why would there be wheat in any of these meats?" I tried to explain what gluten is to no avail. You win some, you lose some -
ARCHIVED Deli Meats
GottaSki replied to collins146's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've had reactions from sliced turkey when I first went gluten-free, so I read all deli meat ingredients (well I read all ingredients now and don't buy the item if I'm not sure it's gluten-free) I've found some deli meats label themselves gluten-free, but many don't. Just yesterday I was frustrated while trying to find roast beef at PriceClub....many... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Probiotic
GottaSki replied to campcour's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I tried Yakult when I first went gluten-free and it bothered my stomach...finally got back to looking for another probiotic...thought I'd update this thread regarding Now Foods Acidophilus/bifidus ...pulled off their website Other Ingredients: Potato Starch, Gelatin (capsule), Cellulose, Silica and Magnesium Stearate (vegetable source). Contains milk... -

Have a sandwich on soft wheat bread and a bagel for me! We've done well replacing most of our favorites...will try the croissant recipe soon - thanks for sharing... here's another recipe for JNBunnie's wanted list: Sweet and Sour Chicken 1-2 pounds of boneless chicken cut into bit sized pieces Marinate 20 minute in: 1 Tbsp gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED Confused About Biopsy Today
GottaSki replied to Coconutmilk's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I know it's hard, but wait for the biopsy results and then speak to your doctor about both the results and what he saw. My GI showed me pics from the camera along with results from biopsy. I would discount the nurse's "normal" comment and speak directly to your doctor. Good news is you can go gluten-free after the biopsy has been taken, so you may... -
ARCHIVED Easy, Yummy Bread In Minutes
GottaSki replied to lonewolf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
ps...the salt was hard to get a measure on...I use a salt grinder and give a couple grinds per serving...might want to start with 1/2 teaspoon salt for 24. -
ARCHIVED Easy, Yummy Bread In Minutes

Our family dinners are gluten-free...we started with meat, vegies and either rice/potato and have now replaced ingredients in most of our old favorites. It will take some effort, but I can tell you it becomes much easier within a short time. We do still have gluten cereals, breads and flour tortillas for my gluten eaters, but most of our food has become...

ARCHIVED Car/motion Sickness Vs. A "glutening"
GottaSki replied to elle's mom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
We have one son that frequently became sick on road trips and felt better very shortly afterward...this happens less and less as he grows older (14). For many years we used bonine (not sure if gluten-free) and then we were able to control with "sea-bands" - wrist bands available at any drug store that have a little button that sits on the inside of the... -
How long have you been gluten-free? It can take a while to heal... I've been gluten-free for nearly 6 months and except for some minor improvement with my stomach early on, my symptoms have become much more severe, joint issues, heat intolerance, fatigue and depression. I've been in bed more than out when not at work. Thankfully my husband and teen...
