  1. Hi Dan- I was 43 years old at diagnosis after at least 25 years of reporting very mild versions of the same symptoms that eventually became so bad I refused to hear "All your tests are normal - i.e. go-away" from one more doctor. It still took over a year and 50 blood tests for someone to finally run the tTG IgA test that started me on the path to celiac...
  2. PS...anyone else with suggestions? just tried to order Joan's -- $48 to ship to California -- guess those would be a very nice b-day gift!
  3. I agree Prilosec sounds like an odd solution. Best to start with the food log -- don't forget vitamins/supplements. Too much Magnesium gives me some issues. Also, not sure how long you've been gluten-free -- it can take some time for everything to become more regular -- for years my problem was more C than D - think it took at least 3 months for me...
  4. Don't know where to get a good gluten-free bagel - looking forward to seeing responses. You were wrong on one count - a good bagel on my birthday would be a huge present. I guess one good thing about dating or living with a Celiac is that great presents are more about the thought than the cost. Good Luck with your search!
  5. There are no stupid questions here... There are so very many questions, small to large, when starting gluten free -- this is the perfect place to come, ask and receive a quick answer to remove those many small to large worries from your transition to gluten-free???
  6. Ketchup - we eat Heinz - no problem Salad Dressings - we check label for gluten Shredded Cheese - we have had no problem with kraft shredded cheeses, but just this weekend I purchased a large bag of sargento shredded mexican cheese mix and both of us had a mild reaction -- there was nothing listed on the label that was gluten (sometimes shredded cheeses...
  7. We haven't had a problem with BRM brownies...they just come out a bit too fudgy/chewy/not-cakelike. We don't like cake-like either, which we found Betty Crocker to be. So yesterday I combined one package of BRM and one package of Betty Crocker added some extra chocolate chips -- came out just right.
  8. I didn't have much improvement at first -- the bloating decreased within the first weeks, but that's about it. The second thing I noticed was about at 6-8 weeks - my nails were strong and healthy, instead of weak and cracking (this small improvement actually sustained me for a long time because although digestive symptoms continued to improve, my fatigue...
  9. Wow -- I could have written these exact words myself nine months ago! I too was a weak positive, but my severe symptoms made the GI suggest endo. The endo itself isn't bad...the meds they give you made me out of it enough that it seemed the whole procedure seemed like a few minutes. I just rested afterward and was fine the next day. BEST thing was...
  10. We eat reg Rice Chex and Cinnamon Chex with no problems to date
  11. We have evolved into a nearly gluten-free household - the one exception in our kitchen is DH and one DS eat regular bread. We keep it in the frig, they use the gluten-toaster and a gluten-cutting board. We haven't had any cc issues at home, so I'd vote for giving visitors a gluten bread station (toaster and cutting board). Show by example that everything...
  12. We had the same question when we started gluten-free. We eat both Planter's Dry Roasted and Plain Salted Peanuts every day -- we buy them in the huge can from warehouse store as they are a great quick snack.
  13. My kids are teens and grown, but we attended a very similar preschool. I vote with two of the answers given: 1) Educate the teacher further - minimally provide a list of approved snacks to the teacher - this will help not only your child, but any other gluten challenged pre-schoolers they may have in the future....imagine how nice it would be to hear...
  14. I second ruling out other autoimmune diseases. Although my digestive track improved within the first few months of gluten-free, I became much sicker - severe fatigue, fog, joint stiffness, in the morning I am very stiff but okay once I get moving, but am sore and foggy by 3pm - can't walk stairs by 4pm. I am slowly improving since being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia...
  15. Luckily my celiac doctor was the one to start all the nutrient testing during diagnosis - and I've got to tell you the subsequent tests have brought me a great deal of comfort and confidence in the diagnosis when I wasn't experiencing much physical improvement. I would say my husband is one of the most supportive celiac spouse's and even he had doubts of...
  16. You can most definitely have a negative tTG IgA -- mine was only marginal after 43 years of gluten -- all of my children had negative tests, but each has different symptoms of celiac. So sorry that you are feeling poorly from the gluten - what someone else said is important - let your husband know how this glutening affected you. This episode is all the...
  17. Good Morning Alexandra- Welcome! Thought I'd comment on your great list of ?s. I have so many questions like, is it genetic? Yes, but all that carry Celiac Genes do not develop Celiac. Will it make it harder to get pregnant? Maybe, I believe I've been undiagnosed celiac for most if not all of my 44 years. It was not difficult for me to become...
  18. At two months I had shown improvement with digestive issues, but many other symptoms actually got worse -- I stuck with it and my follow-up blood work has all improved consistently. Hang in there! -Lisa
  19. I've got two copies as well. My celiac gastroenterologist told me that that meant all of my children would carry the DQ2. I think I actually had two of the same and a third that was subset of DQ2 -- have to look it up.
  20. First, try not to be too hard on yourself. One slip does not ruin all you have accomplished. You can go right back to eating gluten-free. I'd say the reactions you did have are enough to know your body can't tolerate gluten. Second, because celiac diagnosis is not always clear-cut it is easy for some (even husbands, family and close friends) to second...
  21. Thank you -- amazing that I too rejoice in your improved bodily functions -- boy sure shows that alot has changed for me this year! Lisa
  22. For me the first improvement was no more bloating...just prior to diagnosis I was severely bloated every afternoon/evening -- looked about 8 months pregnant that would deflate by the next morning. Other improvements were all digestive - gas, constipation, heartburn. I still have many other symptoms - stiff/sore upon rising in the AM - improves once...
  23. We did it - our first gluten-free Thanksgiving and it was fantastic!!! Turkey Gravy Mashed Potatoes Stuffing (made with a crumbled loaf of homemade cornbread) YUMMY Whole Cranberry Sauce Peas Pumpkin Pie Everything traditional for our family was the same or better. We may have Thankgiving for Christmas too -- certainly thankful for yesterday...
  24. I second the getting more blood work for nutritional deficiencies. When I was being diagnosed we ran B12, D, K, Iron, Ferritin, Copper and Zinc - all were low and all have risen consistently since going gluten-free. I get tested every three months now and celiac doc says we can stop when I'm in strong normal range. Personally I like having something concrete...
  25. What a wonderful story...you certainly have a great friend there. If you ever host them on Thanksgiving, I can say our first gluten-free Thanksgiving went great with everything traditional served. Only adjustment I made was using a loaf of cornbread crumbled instead of the stuffing cubes I used to use for our favorite traditional stuffing. Everyone thought...
