  1. My initial reaction is major bloating, usually followed by feeling extremely tired/foggy within an hour or two that can last for many hours. Flu like symptoms have happened as well.
  2. I think the only thing you can do is continue to talk about the positive changes in your life since eating the correct food for your body. If your Mom was diagnosed a long time ago, perhaps she doesn't understand the disease as well as you. She may not be absorbing information you are telling her -- sometimes we don't listen and learn from those...
  3. Hello Tiffany- Missed the first round of birthday cheer --a belated but heartfelt birthday wish for wonderful health and much happiness in the coming year! Happy Thanksgiving too! -Lisa
  4. We haven't had any problems with Chex that is labeled gluten-free, but contacted them to check because of all the buzz lately - here is the General Mills Response: "Thank you for contacting us about gluten in our gluten free Chex cereals. General Mills offers several products that are labeled gluten-free. Please check the package label for the gluten...
  5. Not sure what else could cause it, but the antibiotics could be the cause. They are hard on the system - our family eats yogurt regularly when on them. If you can't eat yogurt, maybe try a probiotic? -Lisa
  6. I know that some of the flavored creamers contain gluten...so if the expresso was made from a packaged item, not plain coffee beans I'd be leary Hope you are feeling better soon.
  7. Definite YES! Not for me...never felt good after eating pizza - always thought it was the sauce...kinda made sense to me after celiac dx - it was the crust bothering me all these years! But my kids love pizza and I miss easy take out for them. Thanks for contacting Papa Johns - I'll do the same. I don't know about other places, but here...
  8. If you've already tried the simple strategies of more fiber & fruit/fruit juice (apples, prunes, raisins) you have two options to try to determine celiac: 1) Go back to eating gluten normally, have celiac and nutrient blood work - followed by endoscopy if indicated by either tests or symptoms. If possible have this done by a Gastrenterologist whom...
  9. Not sure about the lower pelvic pain -- maybe someone else can answer. Did/Could you have nutrients checked? Iron, Ferretin, B12, D, K, Iron and Copper are good to check. Try gene testing for DQ2 or DQ8 -- if you carry the gene you CAN develop celiac - doesn't mean you will. If you don't carry the genes it would rule out celiac. You could go completely...
  10. I don't know what the total serum IgA is...could this be another name for Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA?
  11. I've struck out asking both my local Whole Foods and Jimbos (health food store) to carry Udi's. Yesterday I asked Amazon to start carrying - they already carry Udi's granola so I am hopeful. If anyone else buys from amazon, please contact them to ask them to carry -- we buy cereal, flours, cake/brownie/pancake mixes and pasta from them because of...
  12. I keep rice crackers, deli meat, usually turkey, spinach and avocados at work to make mini sandwiches. Fills you up but the rice crackers are far lighter and less calories than gluten-free bread or bagels.
  13. update for the tortillas stored in frig: microwave for 20-30 seconds and they taste nearly fresh and don't crack when rolling
  14. We love Bob's chocolate cake - we make it quite often for birthdays or just when we are feeling deprived. We add 1 cup of choc chips to the cake mix and frost with: 1 can condensed milk 2 cups choc chips 2 tsp vanilla Melt together and frost immediately -- sinful!!!
  15. I've had bone loss and receding gums for past 10 years or more...haven't done any research, but my bone loss came to mind upon celiac dx.
  16. I can't help with the fat malabsorption/villa damage question. I thought the only way to check for villi damage was endoscopy??? Glad you are sticking gluten-free for now. Good Luck!
  17. I was a borderline tTG IgA - endoscopy showed major villa damage and three biopsies confirmed celiac. Have you had iron, ferritin, B12, D, K, copper or zinc run? I was extremely low in all these nutrients which aided in my diagnosis. 4 weeks isn't that long for healing...I had improvement with digestive issues by about 6-8 weeks and I still have...
  18. This one is tough. I've got two teen boys - both tested negative, but both have different celiac symptoms. When I was diagnosed this past spring we talked about the likelihood that they have celiac. My 16 year old (15 when he went gluten-free) decided to go gluten-free to see if it improved his gerd and fatigue symptoms. He has had major improvement...
  19. I can usually read labels...but some are so stinkin small...I now take reading glasses into the grocery store as it makes all the labels easier to read. Thanks Celiac -- making me wear those pesky glasses prematurely!
  20. I've also seen statistics that women are more likely to get autoimmune diseases, but I think Celiac may be an equal opportunity disease. For what I think...sometimes celiac is dormant until triggered by an event like illness, surgery or child birth...that last one may bring the numbers of disease triggered in women higher. As for doctors...I often wondered...
  21. Great advise...keep it simple at first. Once you are comfortable with gluten-free you will be able to adapt almost all your favorites by substituting ingredients. For us baked goods -- cookies and cakes have translated well, but with bread you really need a good gluten-free recipe. Welcome and be sure to ask anything and everything that is confusing...
  22. wow...simple enchilada sauce...i'll give that a try... we make enchiladas with canned verde sauce but add in sugar, chili powder, cumin and ground pepper -- they don't taste like a can -- We did have to switch brands when we went gluten free -- will have to check at home what brand we use now. "tortilla" update: The fresh "tortillas" are far superior...
  23. I know...the gluten-eaters in my house can choose to give up gluten...40 days may just swing them over to gluten-free!
  24. B12 - I think maybe I was tested for B6 at one point, but B12 is the one I have done repeatedly.
  25. Thanks! & a minor correction -- i'm taking malic acid/mag -- have no idea where that brain blip of mobic acid came from Thanks to esammarie too -- will keep the amitriptyline in mind if I don't continue to improve. -Lisa
