  1. Hugs to you sweetie. (((((solarglobe))))) It's hard. It's okay to vent. It sounds like you're sharing the kitchen with your family. Could there be appliances that are cc'd? You've got to play detective and you are. You are still on the learning curve. I know what you mean, the "glazed look" in the eye. I'm eating out alot less for a while till...
  2. The clerk at my local S. says corporate tells them there are going to be more gluten-free items. Woohoo!
  3. How long does this take? I am soooo looking forward to not having split nails!!! Please someone tell me. I'm in week 5.
  4. Aw boy. You're right. Guess who's staying near the bathroom today just in case?
  5. Try Bubble and Bee... (dot com) Do read the ingredients, as I'm no expert but... looks safe to me, and it's paraben free. When my current shampoo and shower gel run out I'm replacing w/these.
  6. Hi guys. Starting to venture into restaurants and today had an urge for burger & fries. Stopped at Islands (not sure if they're outisde of california?) for a burger (no bun of course) and fries. I asked if they had any coating on them or were just fried. Waitress said they were cut and cooked on-site and had no coating. They had spices, tasted/looked...
  7. Congratulations on the scholarship and starting college! Enjoy this great season in your life. I vote for living on campus, whether sorority or dorm. I put myself through college, got scholarship for tuition but had to pay my own way living-wise. It was great fun, but my biggest regret is not finding a way to live on campus and develop deeper bonds...
  8. This is just anecdotal, but since going gluten-free I've eaten sweet pickle relish and black olives and pimento-stuffed spanish olives (Trader Joe's brands) and have had no problem. If you eat those items and do have a reaction, I would explore the possibility that you may be sensitive to vinegar. I know someone like that, she couldn't tolerate any condiments...
  9. Wow, include me as another gi or celiac disease (whatever) who has suffered anxiety/depression off and on for years. Past few years I've been on ssri and thought this managed things well. But in the past year or so I've had panic attacks bad enough that for a while I was dependent on xanax twice a week or so. This really didn't fit with my image of myself...
  10. Yes you're quite right about staying below the radar; he's smart and I told him so. At the same time, he gave off yellow flags about a few things. No biggie though. It's the overall pattern I sometimes feel blue about. Thanks for your thoughts.
  11. I have good friends here, but they work so hard just to keep going... my friends include everyone from the "working poor" to the rather well off. Gay, straight, wide age range, ethnic backgrounds. But everyone is running all the time. I see them maybe once/twice a month. As I'm disabled and at home a lot, often writing, resting, whatever... I'm lonely...
  12. Do we know for sure whether Ellen has celiac disease or just g intolerance? Maybe she was just addressing allergies or maybe our general overdependence on wheat? Just guessin, didn't see the show. I too am an Ellen fan. Her show is pretty light in tone though, don't think she delves deeply into diseases the way for instance Oprah does.
  13. Interesting issues you raise here. I've asked myself the question Nasalady has, and wondered if there is a clear demarcation between celiac disease and gluten intolerance. Yes there has been an autoimmune process identified with celiac, but since being dx'd with lupus I've done a lot of reading and there are many diseases treated by doctors of different...
  14. Wow you were very thin. That sounds so uncomfortable. You had worse symptoms than I did, mine was more the silent type I guess. Except lactose intolerance, and urpiness /indig. I was okay until the past few years. I certainly was never underweight. It does feel good to have normal hunger again! You know the funny thing though, lately I recall...
  15. Hugs to you sweetie! You have gone through a lot of hardship in your young (relatively) life! It's a tough road you've been on, also assuming whatever health problems led to your heart surgery, you've really never been well. Yet! Yet is the operative word. It sounds like you are on the right path. Anyone who has completed 50 credits and works part-time...
  16. An organized trip sounds much easier to deal with gluten-free diet than a more "on your own" one, because you have a guide/host company. I would contact them first, be very clear of your dietary needs and make them check menu item availability. If you're not feeling confident that they are on the ball, ask to see dinner menus from the restaurants. They...
  17. I got some gluten-free brown rice "wraps" at Whole Foods, and they make great substitute for sandwiches. They have to be fridged so I nuke them for 30 sec to make them loose enough to fold, and put lunch meat & cheese, plus salad type veggies like chopped red bell pepper, black olives, spanish olives, and a tspn or so olive oil. That and small fruit...
  18. Having read the cautions about using it from the other posters, I'll add my 2 cents. I've had serious insomnia (anywhere from 0 to 5 hrs sleep) off and on for the past few years and have used a number of otc and rx items. I finally saw an ob/gyn about my hormones, the levels were off, and the hormone replacement I've been using have helped enormously -...
  19. Yes, I posted about my diminished reflux, but also that it feels like there was a disconnect between my hunger and nutritious foods and now they feel more connected. And specifically less hungry, I noticed I ate a gluten-free breakfast yesterday (eggs/cheese/chili scramble) at a local restaurant, and when I'd ordered it before I gobbled down the whole thing...
  20. I made this recipe or one very similar, and the raw veggies give off their water during cooking, making the turkey much moister than it would be otherwise. The Rice Chex idea is brilliant... think the rice bread crumbs are too soft. Also I'm going to try the balsamic glaze. I love a balsamic drizzle w/fresh chopped herbs that I found on one of the...
  21. On another thread someone mentioned chowder which I love (salmon, corn, clam you name it) but I never make that because I can't do lactose. Can you substitute soy milk? Or would you need a thicker base like maybe a combo mashed potatoes and soy milk? While on this subject, can you sub in soy milk for baking? TIA
  22. Reading these responses it seems to reinforce what I was thinking... that we do need meat to get enough protein. Not saying huge quantities, 3oz. tuna, chicken or whatever at lunch and dinner is enough, but if we try to get enough with legumes, eggs, nuts, soy, seeds and non-g grains we'll pretty much have to consume 3000-4000 calories/day.
  23. Now in week 4 gluten-free. The symptom that's plagued me the longest is reflux, which started in my 20s w/a growly stomach and progressed from there. For the past 5 years it has been severe enough to make me dependent on a proton pump inhibitor. For whatever reason it's worse when I lay on my left side, so when I go to bed, even 4-5 hours after eating...
  24. All these look great! Thanks everybody!
