  1. And NOW I should make clear that by saying this, I wasn't saying that I don't want anyone else to respond, just that I wasn't aiming this at anyone else specifically, or hoping to fire away at what anyone else had contributed to the conversation. I of course consider anything I post here fodder for public consumption. Now have at it!!
  2. First, I should make clear that I was only responding to jasonD2, but forgot to hit the proper reply button that would have included his quote, and being in a bit of a hurry I didn't correct it. It IS good to have differing opinions, and I enjoy a good discussion. I'm certainly not going to cast aspersions on those who disagree with me on the candida...
  3. While I agree that doctors don't have all the answers and that medical science is evolving, "MDs are ignorant and greedy" is a pretty awful statement, I think. Some of them are, sure. Some of any given population of people sucks. It really bugs me when people rail against all doctors, though. I was just telling you what medical science would say in answer...
  4. Well, according to medical science, you're wasting your time. Medicine has shown that there's no such thing as "leaky gut" and that "candida overgrowth" isn't really a problem that causes the symptoms some homeopathic practitioners have ascribed to it. I don't want to get tons of rocks thrown at me, but... I tend to side with medical science on this one....
  5. If you can have almonds, Almond Breeze Unsweetened Vanilla is my favorite liquid product on the market today. It's excellent in cereal.
  6. Yeah, we all have weird reactions to various things, it seems. I actually can't drink any alcohol at all, never could. One shot and I'm sick for days. I feel somehow that my college experience wasn't quite what I saw in the movies. I can't digest red meat, and high fructose corn syrup and high sodium foods will really freak my system out. I think partly...
  7. Actually, most alcohol does NOT have gluten in it: https://www.celiac.com/articles/21886/1/Dis...Free/Page1.html You do still have to double-check natural flavors, though, because they certainly can contain gluten.
  8. Your doctor can't test for candida overgrowth because, medically, there's no such thing as candida overgrowth causing leaky gut and other issues. Medical studies have disproven it, according to my doctors. I have a bad reaction to a lot of chicken broths, too, when the sodium content is high. I have to stay away from high-sodium foods and anything containing...
  9. I hear you. I'm a doctoral student, and I was diagnosed in May. Last semester was the hardest semester I've had since starting college. I couldn't focus, I couldn't stay calm when the work piled up, I couldn't stay awake in class or at night when I needed to be working. This semester has just started, but so far I feel better about it, like I'll be able to...
  10. Probably. MSG might bother you. High fructose corn syrup really gets to me. Not all Chinese restaurants use MSG, though, so perhaps if you find one that doesn't, you could try Chinese food again to narrow things down? Also, are you sure there's no soy sauce in your food?
  11. I don't think anyone's arguing - or at least, I am CERTAINLY not arguing - that there's no such thing as gluten intolerance. Not at all. All I'm saying is, asking why some people go on a gluten-free diet with no medical indication isn't a bad thing to do. You were very sick while eating gluten, and going on a gluten-free diet makes total sense for you, and...
  12. My mom (the doctor) says there is absolutely no medical support for the idea of candida overgrowth causing leaky gut, that medical evidence suggests that that is NOT the case, and that drinking hydrogen peroxide at any strength is a) dangerous and ineffective. Leaky gut syndrome is not recognized by the medical community, in other words, and even if it were...
  13. Right, there are medically sound reasons to have hydrogen peroxide in one's mouth. When my boyfriend had oral surgery, he had to rinse with hydrogen peroxide. BUT! There are no medically sound reasons to swallow it, yikes. And it doesn't even make sense, for a yeast overgrowth, even if that yeast overgrowth DID cause a "leaky" gut. You'd be better off swallowing...
  14. I have the same problem with BRM whole-grain mix, and I've been gluten-free for three months now. I think I'll relinquish the rest of the loaf I just made to my boyfriend, who I think secretly believes I'm holding out on him with the good bread. I don't have problems with Pamela's or Gluten Free Pantry mixes.
  15. That sounds very dangerous, and she should consult a medical professional (who might tell her that candida overgrowth does not, in fact, cause leaky gut or anything similar, because that's what's accepted in the medical community at the moment, there being no scientific evidence to prove otherwise). I'm not sure what "food grade" hydrogen peroxide is, given...
  16. I guess I've just always interpreted it as "something people are afraid of or worried about." I think what happened with this author - and this is also true of his title and introduction - is that he was looking for the snappy, catchy phrase, and now that it's all being parsed to death, it doesn't hold up. I publish for a living, too, and that can happen...
  17. I think I'm really missing something here. How is "bogeyman" insulting? It's saying it's something people are worried about. I don't think he's say AT ALL that some people are making things up and don't feel better when they're off gluten. I think he's saying we need to look more at why (is it because they're just paying more attention to what they eat in...
  18. I just don't think the article was trying to say that people SHOULDN'T avoid gluten if they're not diagnosed celiacs. I think it's just bringing up questions about an interesting trend. I do think there are some very under-informed people out there who might associate it with a low-carb diet, and the author was discussing gluten-free diets in the context...
  19. [quote name='Celiacos de M
  20. Yeah, I agree. And we can probably forgive him the title, because his editor might have chosen it, and it's kind of a catchy title, nice symmetry. Sentiment's no good, but I don't think the article made that argument.
  21. I'm going to duck down behind my couch and ask this question: Isn't there something of value in this article? Can we assume that EVERYONE on a gluten-free diet who isn't a celiac is doing it for the "right" reasons? Isn't there some worth in asking why gluten-free diets are on the rise, without jumping to the conclusion that it's just better for everyone...
  22. I see him, too, he's great. Two thumbs up, and his whole office staff rocks.
  23. Even educated people can be really stupid about this. For instance, the physician's assistant (!!!) at my GI doc (!!!!!) told me it's okay to eat pizza sometimes (this was before I was diagnosed and had never heard the word "celiac" before, and she was raising possibilities). I told the doctor at my last appointment and he about hit the roof.
  24. It's just patently untrue that only Caucasians get celiac. Proportionally, my understanding is that it occurs at the same or similar rates amongst all groups of people all over the world, with the exception of a lower incidence in Japan. The internet is full of bad information on celiac (and in general) so be careful! Gluten Free Living just did a good...
  25. The whole Organix line is gluten-free, too.
