  1. I have been wondering about something lately, but I haven't had time yet to research it: Has it been conclusively determined exactly WHERE gluten triggers the autoimmune reaction in celiacs? My thoughts are somewhat nebulous at the moment, but I am thinking that because the (supposedly) primary symptoms of celiac disease are intestinal, everyone assumes...
  2. I had serious trouble with bruising as a child, but not so much lately. I think it might be related to a vitamin K deficiency. It's something to check into, at any rate!
  3. carleyq, Many shampoos and conditioners (especially those for dry hair) contain wheat germ oil, wheat protein, and/or other wheat-derived products. There are also several other chemicals in shampoo that can cause trouble in some individuals, independent of gluten intolerance. The medical establishment generally insists that cosmetic and hygiene products...
  4. Bessie, I don't think your eating disorder caused your gluten intolerance (which is genetic), but I DO think the undiagnosed gluten intolerance probably had A LOT to do with your developing the eating disorder! Your body needs you to be especially kind to it right now, so it can begin to heal. It's tough to have to take personal responsibility for...
  5. Aldo, What had me convinced that these lumps came from my gallbladder was not so much the texture as the color. Have you ever noticed that in medical drawings, the gallbladder is always colored green (often bright green)? I believe it really IS that color in vivo because of all the bile inside it. The lumps I passed were a rich, dark emerald green,...
  6. I believe I have read that in the US, if a label lists plain "vinegar" as an ingredient, it MUST be referring to apple cider vinegar. I wonder if this is still true, now that distilled vinegar has become cheaper than cider vinegar! Also, some inexpensive brands of balsamic vinegar may contain caramel color, which MIGHT make them non-gluten-free. I have...
  7. Andrew, I think it depends on the person, like so many other things do. Some people are sensitive to yeast; others aren't. Being celiacs, we have damaged and leaky intestines, which significantly elevates our risk for immune reactions to pretty much any food we eat.
  8. Newbie, I'm sorry to hear that you are still struggling so much emotionally, but I totally understand your feelings. Back when I was wheat-free but not gluten-free, I felt this way a good portion of the time. I usually feel pretty content with life these days, but when I don't, I CAN'T just tell myself that it will get better soon! I try, but it never...
  9. Wendy, I believe the fluid diet is used to clear out the digestive tract as much as possible so the endoscope has freedom of movement.
  10. Wow, Erika, *I* could have written that post! I'm not totally sure what is going on, either, but my acne seems to get worse whenever I have I gluten accident. Overall, my acne problem has actually improved significantly since I went gluten-free, so I am just observing it for trends at this time. So far I have found that I get many little pimples on...
  11. IT'S NOT JUST YOU!!! In my circle of friends (which is pretty small), I can think of at least a dozen people (and nine of their kids) who I think need to be tested! Add to that the cashier at the local maternity store, the other young mother with kids slightly younger than mine that I met while shopping for a new car this weekend, and a couple of other...
  12. Here's I recipe I created by tinkering with a regular non-gluten-free oatmeal/fruit bar cookie recipe. Enjoy! Apricot Crumble Bar Cookies Cookie base/crumble topping: 3/4 cup amaranth flour 1/2 cup arowroot starch 1/2 cup rice bran 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/4 tsp. baking soda 1/4 tsp. salt (if using unsalted butter or ghee) 1/2 cup gluten-free...
  13. Andrew, I don't know enough about the subject to comment on your doctor's theory, but here's something that occurred to me after I posted my previous response: might you be sensitive to yeast? Lactobacillus acidophilus is a bacterium, but Saccharomyces boulardii is a YEAST. It might be worth checking for a yeast intolerance or allergy! I hope you manage...
  14. Ann, Well, I got some results from my gallbladder flush! Here's how it went: I survived the two days of apple-juice fasting with no significant difficulty. I had aches and pains in my neck and shoulders and a sensation of pressure under my lower ribs, but no hypoglycemia (thanks ENTIRELY to having been gluten-free for almost four months, I am sure-...
  15. Mariann, My guess is that fresh apricots are a good source of calcium, too, but you would have to eat the same *number* of them as you would dried to get the same amount of calcium, and I don't know how that might affect your digestion. As far as greens go, I believe juicing them is entirely acceptable. My favorite green to eat by itself is a variety...
  16. Mariann, I don't know about the Citracal, but I did a bit of research and discovered that whole grains and grain products like rice bran (the absolute best), amaranth, quinoa, and buckwheat are rich sources of magnesium, and I believe that greens (kale, collards, turnip, mustard, etc.) and dried apricots (and maybe other dried fruits) are good as well...
  17. Steve, That's a pretty solid basis for a healthy diet, even if it probably does get a bit boring at times. I'm glad your body is happy about being caffeine-free. I chose to give up caffeine completely (even decaf drinks) several months ago, and it worked wonders for me. It was HARD, though--even harder for me than going gluten-free turned out to be...
  18. Hi, Jillian! Welcome to the board! I, too, put a lot of stock in mother's intuition. My two children look like the picture of health to most people because they are tall, but my older son began producing bulky, loose, extremely foul-smelling stools and falling down the weight charts pretty much as soon as he began eating solid foods. It was always...
  19. Andrew, Open Original Shared Link is a page that may help explain why the probiotics you are taking are not behaving as you expected. I hope you find it informative reading, and I hope you feel better soon!
  20. Tagger, Those euphemisms are pretty funny, too! I do get irritable when I have accidentally ingested gluten, but not from taking B vitamins. I did just read somewhere on the internet that B vitamins appear to cause acne outbreaks in some people, especially on the chin and forehead. Well, I recently started taking a (gluten-free) multi-vitamin and promptly...
  21. Janine, Antibody levels DO NOT correlate to severity of symptoms, or even severity of damage, so don't let your doctor's comment compound your worries! (And I'm sure Mariann can corroborate this, after all her struggles to get a diagnosis!) Being on a reduced-gluten diet does allow antibody levels to drop and may be responsible for your inconclusive...
  22. That was me who mentioned the enzyme glucoamylase, I believe. I think it works best to prevent the autoimmune reaction from starting, rather than shortening the duration after it has begun. I am not an expert on enzymes, so I will just tell you that I read about it Open Original Shared Link, and let you draw your own conclusions. Other than that, I simply...
  23. Aldo, I suspect that Mariann's comments are right on target. If this is the same company that makes Gorilla Munch, I wouldn't touch their cold cereals with a ten-foot pole! My toddler had his worst gluten reaction since going gluten-free from a box of that cereal (and it wasn't primarily intestinal, it was a huge flare-up of eczema, so Michelle's theory...
  24. Laura, I know exactly what you mean, only you expressed it much better than I could have! I just recently had the dubious pleasure of informing my parents-in-law that I and my children are gluten-free for life (we'll get tested by Enterolab as soon as we can afford it, but that won't change our diets since we are all doing so much better gluten-free)...
  25. YankeeDB, Wow, it's funny you should ask that! I just recently had a relevant experience, but I hesitated to report it because of the whole issue of appearing to condone eating disorders. (I believe that short fasting is something that can be done unsupervised if you can honestly say that you have NO tendency toward a distorted body image. Extended...
