  1. I'm so glad that others are writing as well. While I was more than pissy while watching the episode (came at a bad moment - I got glutened in the afternoon and than had to deal with mother in law... so I was a wee bit stressed, shall we say? lol) I promise, I kept my temper and stayed polite in my email. I also posted a quick item on her message board as...
  2. Daily show. Sent as politely worded email as I could (even made my husband read it through it make sure) and also posted a note on her bulletin board.
  3. I'm not sure if this is the right spot for this, if not, can some smart soul whoosh it were it should go? I'm actually kinda shaking. Peeved. Shrieked for a few minutes at the television screen, and am now stuck in what seems like the 7th ring of Hades trying to maneuver my way through a website to send a note regarding an issue of what seems like some...
  4. What EVER did those poor little birdies do to you! I can just picture it - the poor little things, too bloated to fly. The meatballs turned out... edible. Just. As it is, anymore I'm sticking to gluten-free breads I make myself. I'm this close to perfecting my gluten-free english muffin recipe. It's pretty tasty now, but I'm edging it to...
  5. It can also be other food allergies or sensitivities coming to the fore, as well as cross contamination. For example - I'm allergic to eggs. Not violently, but the problem is definitely there. Didn't really pay much attention BEFORE the celiac, because, after all... I always felt nauseous. Now that I know about the celiac, and don't eat gluten - eggs...
  6. The same advice that gets handed out to folks everyday works great for the gluten free foods - shop the perimeter of the store, stick to foods with single ingredients, and try to make as much of it fresh as possible. One piece of advice I WOULD give? Find some easy things to keep on hand at all times to snack on. Nuts (if not allergic), popcorn, fresh...
  7. In my case, my husband is the one that started clearing out the cupboards - I had planned to just go gluten free by myself and keep cooking "normal" food for him. He wasn't having with THAT load of nonsense (his words!). While he will eat items with gluten outside of the home sometimes, at home, he is gluten free as well. And since I pack his lunch most days...
  8. Depends a bit for me - if I'm in pretty good shape beforehand and the stars are completely aligned in my favor? I've managed to shake it off in about 3 days a few times. If not? Up to two weeks before I can say with certainty I'm all the way back on the beam. Well... that I can see the beam from where I'm standing!
  9. You are very right about the cost being a huge factor - before celiac, pasta was a go to meal staple. I likely made it 3-4 times a week (different ways of course) before! It was cheap, filling, and easy to get made quickly (My husband and I made a terrible mistake with our friends. We were the first to buy a house and always have food on hand. I fed a lot...
  10. If you can order from Amazon, they carry a pasta I only just found - bionaturae Organic Gluten free pasta. It's made with rice, potato, and soy flour. I've not had good luck with any of the other pasta's I've tried, so I was leery of trying another, ESPECIALLY as expensive as they are to test out. I'm really glad I found this brand - and even happier...
  11. I tried it. Once. And decided that if that was my only option - going without bread for the rest of my life or eating that... No bread for me. Frankly, it kind of puts me in mind of those green squishy foam cubes florists use. Ultimately, I ground it up and made meatballs with it - not great, but after dropping $5.49 on a single loaf I couldn...
  12. Three specific items run in rotation in the back of my head. To my irritation? Not even particularly GOOD items when I COULD eat them. (I mean, come on. If I had hard core cravings for my mom's stroganoff or my gram's homemade noodles I would understand. THESE things? Just weird. 1) A slice of pizza from the mall. Yeah, I know. Mall pizza. Didn't really...
  13. Glad you are feeling peppy! Here? Warmish and sunny, and feeling fine. Nervous as heck, but fine. Things are actually lining up in a rather epically good way for me in the celiac world - I'm looking at beginning to teach cooking classes this summer, I finally buckled to family nagging and have started working on a cookbook... which explains the fresh...
  14. I pretty much use it equal measure for soy sauce. Some quick ideas? Stirfry veggies and or meat of choice until tender crisp and cooked through - add a few Tbsp of Bragg's, some garlic, a spoonful of brown sugar, and a shake of red pepper flake for a quick stirfry glaze. I use it in salad dressings, sauces, marinades - anywhere I want some salt and...
  15. And if she doesn't.... there are bigger problems in her life than dealing with a dates celiac! (Possible exploding worries, for one! lol)
  16. Yeah, Art seems like a nice enough guy... but I was left wondering just how did Zoey D (the actress they catered for) felt after SEEING how he was yelping about he KNEW it was going to be something crappy like that to deal with. Somehow, I doubt she will ever darken his door after watching the tape. Frankly, the only chef there I'd happily go to the restaurant...
  17. Well, I can honestly say there are few things that will kill a gal's libido than being nauseous and tired all the time. Almost a year now since going gluten free and, um... well. Still tired. But grinning a lot about how I got there! Added bonus? Hubs and I have been married for 3 years now, and I can honestly say we're having LOTS more sex than...
  18. I've gotten sick eating Quaker oats (I know, I know, idiotic idea to sit down to a bowl! lol) but I DO eat Bob's certified gluten free Irish Oats and the rolled oats without any problems. Even went so far as to have a blind test with my husband (he was not thrilled with me doing it, but saw the value... or at least the value I put on knowing) to make sure...
  19. I'll be honest - while I was thrilled to see someone with celiac on the show, by the middle of the first round I was so annoyed I wanted to toss the remote at the tv! Seriously? Decide to dredge your item with wheat flour to prove you "know your flavors" - thereby showing you CAN'T TASTE WHAT YOU ARE MAKING.... kinda a cardinal sin in the cooking world...
  20. For the most part, I shop at Aldi's for the basics - Milk, butter, eggs, and quite a bit of my fresh veggies and haven't had any problems. (Added bonus? The major grocery store around here sells milk for 2.89-4.99 a gallon. Aldi's is usually $1.89 per gallon!) I stay away from most convenience items anyway - but for things like canned tomatoes and bags...
  21. Not a worry. My husband and I are both nerds, and decided when we got married we weren't even going to SAY the, well, D-word, at least not in relation to us. Not an option. The one caveat? When we have kids - never ever EVER will they be left alone with this loon. The only thing that will make me say "We're done. Bu-bye" would be if he did this. And he...
  22. Um... at the risk of being branded forever as irreversibly weird, my husband and I have added another source of fiber to our diets that seems to be helping a lot. Based on those "Fiber Water" drinks they sell in the diet section, I've taken to spiking the splenda sweetened koolaide we drink with the gluten-free tasteless, dissolves in water fiber powder...
  23. Nah. Just cheap! I'm blessed that I work from home - so I have a LOT more time to cook and to shop. It's also still just my husband and I, so I'm able to figure this all out before I have kids. Toss in, well. My friends call me the grocery Rainman. I also seem to live in the perfect sweet spot in the country - Northern Ohio is GREAT for cost of living...
  24. If it helps, you're not the only one who has found this out. When I first went gluten free, people kept warning me that I was going to gain a lot of weight until I figured it out (most put it like the "freshman 15) and got healthy enough to start exercising routinely again. (Between stomach issues and fibro, I had hit a bad patch and packed on some weight...
  25. Thanks all. I should know by now to not let this... person get under my skin. She is, well, impossible. Always has been, always will be. Before celiac there was still my shellfish allergy and it took three YEARS to get her to stop trying to shove shrimp onto my plate. The capping moment for THAT was when my husband found her rubbing lobster shell onto...
