ARCHIVED Question For Magpie (And Anyone Else..)
MagpieWrites replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You might not be able to see it, but you are all making me blush a bit here. The writing thing... I'm working on it actually. Starting a new website that should finally get off the ground on Monday (not going to put the link here - I don't want to annoy the powers that be . If someone really DOES want to read more of my babblings, drop me a line and... -
ARCHIVED Question For Magpie (And Anyone Else..)
MagpieWrites replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's a simple enough answer, hon. At least in my case. My mother in law is absolutely, 100%, completely cracked. It started, I think, simply from the sad fact she is also quite possibly the stupidest person wandering the planet (not being a b... brat here. That is her son's view. She is addicted to prescription pain killers since the age of 22 and... -
The sad thing? I talk like I write. And it gets worse.... when very very irate, I apparently turn into a foul mouthed mashup of Dr Suess and Winnie the Pooh. Complete with rhyming. My home life gets very odd some days.

I can't speak to their tastiness - but there are quite a few gluten-free beers out there now (didn't like it before I was diagnosed, and happily use the "Oh, sorry, can't alas because of the celiac" excuse when it's waved about now ) if you are needing a quick tipple on the weekends. Hard ciders are lovely, and if the fruit malt drinks were your vice...

Gluten? Thus far not in my case. However, my mother-in-law got caught rubbing shellfish all over my plate one night while out at a restaurant (deathly allergic) "because she wanted to prove I was just trying to ruin her night out". So... yeah. I'm sure there could be some evil sons of biscuits out there who might try. Just hoping no one here as any particularly...

ARCHIVED Your Most Mortifying Bodily Function Story
MagpieWrites replied to afreeclimber74's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Honestly? While I'm thrilled those days are gone (for the most part, the odd stomach bout still hits from time to time), and will be honest and say it certainly wasn't a fun way to have to live... it wasn't such a horrible thing either for me. I have a WEIRD sense of humor, and come from a family who ALL have one serious health issue or another. After... -
ARCHIVED Your Most Mortifying Bodily Function Story
MagpieWrites replied to afreeclimber74's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Now, in my case, this came LONG before the celiac diagnosis - but like many, I've spent my life developing some serious Potty-Fu skills. I'm the gal to ask where the bathroom is - even if I've never been in the building before. Desperation will point the way. (Weirdly, the longer I'm gluten free and feeling healthy, this skill is atrophying!) I also, by... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Pasta For Cold Pasta Salads?
MagpieWrites replied to sallyterpsichore's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
After trying tinkyada over and over again because so many people spoke so highly about it, I was about to just accept I wasn't going to eat pasta anymore (I know folks love it, but I can't stand the stuff) until I found a new brand. Or at least new to me. Bionaturae Organic Gluten Free Pasta - lots of shapes available, and works beautifully both cold and... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Sticker Shock
MagpieWrites replied to lilbit's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
For the mornings, can't go much easier than Chex cereal - rice, corn, cinnamon, and chocolate are all gluten free AND can be scooped up on sale for usually between $2-$2.50 ( at least around here ). Salsa and corn chips, fresh fruits & veggies, cheese, even nutbutter on a corn tortilla will work. Plain rice (gussy it up with some salsa for spanish... -
ARCHIVED What Did You Eat Today?
MagpieWrites replied to sb2178's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Breakfast - chocolate chex and diet mt Dew (a bit embarrassing, but once in a while, what the heck, ya know? Lunch - deconstructed lasagna (turkey sausage, gluten-free pasta, ricotta, mozzarella, peppers, marinara, and spinach baked.) Dinner? It's hot and I spent the afternoon splitting wood for the winter so nothing too industrious. Honestly, looks... -
ARCHIVED Do Doctors Normally Do "maintenance" After A celiac disease Diagnosis?
MagpieWrites replied to Almendra's topic in Doctors
Hate to say it, but this seems to be the more common reaction I hear of after diagnosing a patient with celiac. In my case, the doctor came out after the biopsy, shrugged and said "Well, looks like celiac after all" and tried to walk away. My husband literally had to STAND IN THE DOORWAY (my wonderful husband is a former powerlifter - when he blocks... -
ARCHIVED New To Gluten-free...whats Your Typical Diet?
MagpieWrites replied to Metoo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I took me awhile to get into the groove, but honestly, cooking/eating gluten-free does become 2nd nature after a bit! Breakfast for me is, most days, either a smoothie (yogurt, fruit, whizzed in the food pro), some Chex (rice, corn, and chocolate are all Gluten free - and far far cheaper than the "specialty" gluten-free cereals.), or a muffin (homemade... -
ARCHIVED Is Fatigue Normal *after* Going Gluten Free?
MagpieWrites replied to mamarie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Are you getting everything your body needs now that you aren't eating gluten? I ended up being told by my doctor to start taking B complex vitamins because I was so tired all the time - most Americans apparently get their B vitamins from enriched cereals and processed foods (not a whole lotta liver and shellfish being eaten! lol) and with those gone, it can... -
ARCHIVED Well, That Was Miserable
MagpieWrites replied to MagpieWrites's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks all. As my head clears (and my stomach settles - soon... I really really hope soon) I'll be taking all the advice and suggestions and putting them into effect. My husband has already spoken to several folks at HR and they are moving things up the ladder on their end - I just need to tackle Royal Caribbean on my side next. I think one of... -
ARCHIVED Alternative To Pumpkin In Pumpkin Cake/rolls?
MagpieWrites replied to StacyA's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Like others have said - a sweet potato steamed and mashed works almost exactly like pumpkin in recipes, but UNLIKE the others.... I happen to be in Northeast Ohio (Akron) and might have an idea for you to GET pumpkin! The local Aldi's have started carrying canned pumpkin (plain AND pie filling) at least around here, again. I had been getting a tad bit... -
If it is at all possible for you, can I recommend seeking out a good local butcher? Since being diagnosed a year ago with celiac, I have found that eating prepackaged meat from the grocery store can be a risking thing for me. I'm really blessed in that I found an amazing local farmer/butcher who not only raises all their meats (grass-fed too!) but takes really...

I just got back from a trip, and I'm not sure what all I should do about the experience - but I DO know I need to do something, because this was just beyond the pale. My husband received a "mandatory corporate award" from his company, which boiled down to 2000 employees all stuck on a boat for 5 days being grateful for the company telling them they are...

ARCHIVED Completely Grain Free
MagpieWrites replied to farmwife67's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well that answers ONE big worry for me! I've looked at tons of recipes for gluten-free cooking and so many sing the praises of almond or coconut flour as a great replacement - which is great for many, but when you are allergic to BOTH, well. Not so good. I'd been wondering if I could use cashews, but could never find anyone who knew one way or the other.... -
ARCHIVED Never Ending Search For Flour Substitute In Baking
MagpieWrites replied to Lgood22573's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
One of the biggies in my cooking - between rice flour, sorghum, and millet, I really don't miss "normal" flour all that much! -
ARCHIVED Shrimp Curry - What Flour To Use?
MagpieWrites replied to sa1937's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
For myself, whenever I need to make a roux - be it for gravy, sauces, or the like - I tend to just use an equal amount of sweet rice flour in place of the wheat flour. No beany flavor (I'm a bit picky I'll confess. I'll happily eat beans in a thousand different permutations... but I can't stand most bean flours. To me, they tend to overwhelm everything else... -
Hon, if it helps at all - I walked into the scope testing a size 18/20. A year later? My closet is all sizes 10 & 12's. I've lost over 90 pounds and I can honestly say it isn't from trying all that hard. You'll do fine. Even my NON-celiac husband has had about 30+ pounds slide off him this year and the biggest change has been to gluten free...

ARCHIVED Since Going Gluten Free....
MagpieWrites replied to pues's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Let's see.... Lost 90+ pounds, (I'm still a bit stunned over this - I knew I had some fluff, and I knew being tall meant I could hide more than the average bear... but 90 pounds? Just weird! ) not ONE desperate sprint to the bathroom in months (well. Not one due to celiac stomach troubles. Long car rides and stupid purchases of HUGE water bottles don... -
ARCHIVED Any Remedies I Can Try For Accidental Contamination
MagpieWrites replied to Patricia27's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
One of the big things I've found that helps is drinking a LOT of water. I tend to run towards being dehydrated at the best of times (one of the "rules" my mom laid down to my husband when we got married was "Make sure she keeps drinking - every day!" Some guys simply get told to take care of their brides... my poor husband got a manual! ) and it just... -
ARCHIVED The Rest Of The Household...
MagpieWrites replied to NorthernElf's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Our house is gluten free even though I'm the only one with celiac. I suppose in my home, it's just easier and makes better sense. My husband and I love to cook together, eat our dinners together, heck - one of our weekend treats is a nice lay-in on Saturday followed by a leisurely late brunch cooked together. Pancakes and bacon, pumpkin french toast, or even... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Non-Celiac And Gluten
MagpieWrites replied to Pac's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hubs is 100% gluten-free at home, mostly gluten-free at work (9 days outta 10 I pack his lunch with reimaged versions of leftovers - so gluten-free by extension there), and if we're out at a restaurant he, more often than not, chooses items we can share. Once in a great while he'll grab a sandwich when we are out running errands - but really, the only time...
