ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Meet Up In Toronto, Canada
Katie B posted a topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi everyone, I believe a gluten free meet-up in Toronto, Canada was proposed awhile ago and I'd like to follow up on it and see if anyone is interested? There's a great restaurant in Kensington Market that's gluten free called The Kensington Cornerstone. If anyone is interested please let me know what night of the week would work. Thanks! Katie -
ARCHIVED Very Ill. Pls Read My Story (Long)
Katie B replied to Deniseannette's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sorry to hear that you're going through so much but the fact that you're doing so much research is great and you will always be your own best advocate. Your symptoms could be from many things and celiac could definitely be one of them. Your endoscope will provide you more information (I missed whether they did a blood test for you for celiac?) and perhaps... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Take Years To Heal Brain Fog And Fatigue?
Katie B replied to Twizzel's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Twizzel, Many of us have residual effects after going gluten-free. While it is sometimes an instant cure lots of people have to investigate further medical conditions, dietary sensitivities and vitamin deficiencies. From what I've heard and experienced, fructose malabsorption can cause the same type of brain fog and while I can't supply you with the... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Attack, Has This Happened To You?
Katie B replied to oldman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sounds a lot like appendix issues - I thought I had some before and when I was reading through your description it sounded like it. Where are you located in Canada? Usually they triage people according to their needs. If you say you're in 100% pain, can't sleep and think it's your appendix then they might prioritize you. Alternatively, you can wait until... -
ARCHIVED I'm Worried That I May Have Pituitary/adrenal Involvement.
Katie B replied to CNV2855's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi CNV2855, I have secondary adrenal insufficiency and diabetes insipidus. Good on you for even knowing what adrenal insufficiency is! I was sent to the Endocrinologist for blood sugar problems (due to low cortisol) and he figured things out from there. I'd meet with the Endo again to get properly tested. I'm on replacement cortisol and has it ever... -
Hi Lockheed - check out the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. I'm on the low FODMAP diet at the moment and am limiting my carbs per serving and spacing them out...

ARCHIVED Your One Best Money Saving Idea
Katie B replied to aeraen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Definitely agree with clavyn's advice. It's also worth shopping around - many health food stores offer different prices - unlike the big stores they don't compare prices as often. -

Thanks Julie - where is the program? What is it called? -
ARCHIVED My Diet Sucks - Major Vent
Katie B replied to julandjo's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Julie, I can definitely relate. What is the Intestinal Rehab Program that you mention? Have you heard of the low FODMAP diet? I'm not sure if it is of any interest to you but I've tried it with much success (tried the SCDiet previously and it didn't work this time around). I use this diet + gluten-free + low-carb and it seems to be working well... -
ARCHIVED The Chateau Fairmont Lake Louise - Amazing!
Katie B posted a topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Hi all, I recently stayed at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and had the most amazing experience! Beyond Celiac Disease I have many other dietary issues and I was worried about traveling for the first time after being diagnosed. Our vacation was fantastic! From every point of contact - from the food/beverage manager to the restaurant manager, waiters... -
ARCHIVED Believe I Am Now Celiac :(
Katie B replied to bestman30's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
As mentioned by mushroom the antibiotics can cause c. diff - this is what I had during the summer and believe me I thought I was going crazy. Kept going to the Dr. and kept getting a diagnosis of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and kept getting various antibiotics. Had the infection for 2 months until it got really serious. It can cause colitis and... -
ARCHIVED Rectal Administration Of Vitamines?
Katie B replied to Seraphim-Gabe's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Ross, You're probably best to stick with the gluten-free diet and take an oral vitamin (I'm taking Centrum Forte). Once your intestines start healing they'll be able to absorb the nutrients. I don't think taking vitamins rectally would work - your large intestine is meant to move things through and not to extract nutrients so you'd have to somehow get... -
ARCHIVED 10 Months Post Diagnosis, Struggling With New Symptoms
Katie B replied to rain's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
In terms of food intolerances (and it's probably hard to tell if that's what's the cause at this point) you might want to contact the dieticians in Australia (Shepherd Works or Diet Solutions) to do an elimination diet. It's very difficult to do this on your own (although possible). They advocate the low-FODMAP diet. I wouldn't automatically attribute all... -
ARCHIVED I Need Help Cooking gluten-free Pasta
Katie B replied to RachelisFacebook's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Not sure about pasta but you might want to try Vietnamese rice wraps - just soak in water and they're ready to use! -
ARCHIVED A Big Surprise Of My Life!
Katie B replied to Simona19's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This would be in my "time to get new friends" category - but you would know more about the context. Oftentimes you can't force people to understand things even if there are a million sources on the internet (and your friend is a nurse?!). Fine to still talk to them but it might be nice to make some more connections with people who you don't have to convince... -
ARCHIVED Fructose Malabsorption?!?
Katie B replied to Free-CountryGirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi - I have FM and it is very common and the amount you can tolerate varies widely. You should research the low FODMAP diet (Sue Shepperd and Monash University) There's a lot of misinformation out there so the booklet from Monash is the most accurate. It's based on a lot of research and it's been working for me so far. Good luck! -
ARCHIVED 3 Yr Old Turns Into The Incredible Hulk Help!
Katie B replied to sassiskull's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Oh dear, Glad you're trying to get to the bottom of it. I can say from personal experience that I can turn into the Hulk when I'm feeling sick and constipated and I've often thought how difficult it would be to not be able to express this to the ones I love. It really is a terrible feeling! You might also wish to look into fructose malabsorption, lactose... -
ARCHIVED Need Otc Iron Without Intestinal Side Effects
Katie B replied to suzyq63's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Apparently Proferrin (recommended by Kdawg) is the most available source of iron from a supplement and doesn't cause side-effects for most people. Unfortunately, my system is super sensitive and I can't tolerate this so I've been eating clams, teff, spinach etc. to get it up to normal levels. Apparently, if you take a whole bunch of iron you only absorb a... -

ARCHIVED Cauliflower ,your Kidding Me ! Caulifower?
Katie B replied to cahill's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Cahill, Can you tolerate small amounts of rice at a time? Maybe a 1/2 cup every 2.5 - 3 hours? I tried the SCDiet before but have found better success with the low FODMAP diet (combined with gluten-free diet). It's not uncommon for cauliflower and broccoli to be an issue. I definitely cannot tolerate these. I don't want to go too in depth in case... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free And Not Better
Katie B replied to Catbird's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My GI doctor spoke to me about not being able to handle a lot of carbs and recommended the low FODMAP diet since they've done scientific studies to back it up. You might want to give Miralax another shot...it took awhile for me to figure out - have to dissolve in boiling water and take 2 doses a day (1 morning, 1 night). Only reason I'm recommending it is... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free And Not Better
Katie B replied to Catbird's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Catbird, Some of us are affected by the amount of carbs eaten at one time. I can only eat 30g of carbs in one sitting 2.5 - 3 hours apart. This should get better with time but at the moment I have to really watch small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). You might want to try increasing calories from protein and fat and decreasing carbs. I also... -
Might be worth looking at vitamin supplementation like Vitamin E, A, C, D, Zinc etc. Have to be careful about amounts taken though as some are fat soluble and you can take too much.

ARCHIVED New - What Do You Guys Think?
Katie B replied to happierthanabird's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Happier, everyone's probably tired of my posts but when it comes to diet I've been through the gamut of options. I personally think that there's a strong possibility that your daughter may have celiac disease and often times it's difficult to get a firm diagnosis. I personally haven't gotten a 100% diagnosis but the inconvenience of the diet vs... -
