ARCHIVED Went To My First Family Get Together Since Dx
sandsurfgirl replied to Bubba's Mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have a cooler bag that looks like a cute purse. It's Rachel Ray brand. They sell them at Target and I've seen them at Costco occasionally. I also have stainless steel food containers that can hold hot food and be wrapped in a little towel. Bring your own food in a cute bag and nobody will know the difference. People aren't usually watching what... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Handle Family Functions That Revolve Around Food?
sandsurfgirl replied to RiaG14's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That's why you always call ahead. Call in between lunch and dinner so the manager isn't busy with customers. Always speak to the manager NOT the waiters or hostess. Tell them you have an allergy because they understand that word. Ask them to help you figure out what you can eat in their restaurant. Ask if they will be working the day you come in and if not... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Handle Family Functions That Revolve Around Food?
sandsurfgirl replied to RiaG14's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Why are they telling you not to call? That's ridiculous and rude. Banquet halls and hotel ballrooms where they hold weddings and parties are the best at accommodating gluten free. Those types of events are where I've had the easiest time. They won't mind at all making you something. I even had great luck at a couple of things where it was a buffet. The chef... -
ARCHIVED More Restaurants Refusing To Accommodate
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Not going isn't an option for me. My dad is dying of cancer and only has a short time to live. We decided to go to a restaurant that is an equal drive for everyone because my parents live really far away from most of us. We wanted to make it the least hassle on them as possible. My sister came up with this idea like a week ago, so there are no other restaurants... -
ARCHIVED More Restaurants Refusing To Accommodate
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep. Exactly. The only people who will be able to eat Domino's gluten-free pizza will be people who don't need to, those who are doing it because it's a fad or hilariously think it will make them lose weight because you know... gluten free bread is so low in calories. If gluten bothers you, don't bother with Domino's. I've seen threats to sue plenty of... -
ARCHIVED More Restaurants Refusing To Accommodate
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wouldn't sue either, but people do. Even if they don't win, the restaurant must defend itself. And when people get angry they will threaten to sue. Threatening can have just as big of an impact as actually suing. Nobody wants to deal with that in their business. -
ARCHIVED Beware B Vitamin Toxicity!
sandsurfgirl replied to SGRhapsodos's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
1. The original poster DID say check with your doctor. 2. Anyone who would stop their supplements just from reading one thread here is a ding dong. 3. Doctors don't know much about supplements. I was really sick from supplements and THREE doctors shrugged their shoulders and said "I dunno. I dunno. Duhhh." A friend from this board said it was likely... -
ARCHIVED Just Started Gluten Free Diet, Withdrawal Symptoms?
sandsurfgirl replied to Kirstie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You'd be surprised at how fast those antibodies can leave your system. The celiac tests are not that sensitive to begin with. They are fraught with problems because of so many false negatives. So if you are gluten free for a week, your tests might come back negative yet you could still have celiac. Endoscopy is also fraught with problems, but it might... -
There is no way they can deny you safe food. You need to sit down with the boss and have a serious conversation. Explain that celiac disease is a serious autoimmune condition that can make you extremely ill. It CAN kill you, just not as fast as anaphylaxis. This is extremely rare, but my GI (one of the handful of GI docs who actually know about celiac...

ARCHIVED More Restaurants Refusing To Accommodate
sandsurfgirl posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think our gluten free celiac heyday is going to come to a sad end. I'm noticing more and more restaurants refusing to make gluten free, or being really difficult. Bubba Gump's quit having a gluten free menu because of threats of lawsuits. Mel's Diner in Hollywood pretty much refused to serve us saying that nothing in their restaurant was gluten free... -
ARCHIVED Sad For The Child But Not Much I Can Do
sandsurfgirl replied to elfie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't beat around the bush with people like that. I tell then point blank how dangerous it is to still give their child gluten. I tell them my story and how I've suffered and I am emphatic that their child needs gluten free yesterday. I figure if I save a child's life its worth it to make the parents uncomfortable. -
ARCHIVED Healing More Than The Body...
sandsurfgirl replied to Elizabeth5220's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That's an interesting thought. I think there may be some parallels, but the difference is that it's not an addiction we are overcoming. We are unable to eat most of the foods that the rest of the world is eating. If we can have them in a gluten free form they aren't readily available whenever we want them like they are for everybody else. I think the... -
ARCHIVED Glutened By The Cat's Food
sandsurfgirl replied to elonwy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
OP, if you washed your hands well I would think the gluten would be gone when you ate. But if the dry food is dusty that could give you a CC problem. I have no trouble feeding the dog his dry food although my kids usually feed him. My bird food has gluten and haven't had trouble there. The chickens are another story. Chicken feed is so dusty I can't... -
When I first went gluten free I was SO happy I could still drink wine!

I have a great doc in Orange County- Garden Grove. Depending on what part of LA you're in, it could be a long drive, but maybe worth it. He is a young guy, very knowledgeable, helpful and he listens. I like him a lot and I have a huge prejudice against GI docs because most of them are morons when it comes to celiac. Dr. Wanjun Bae, MD Gastroenterology...

ARCHIVED Black Pepper The Silent Ingredient
sandsurfgirl replied to Cinnamon7778's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is a very old post but it's been hanging around so I thought I'd respond. Cinnamon if you're still around it would be nice to see an update. Most likely your gut was sensitive because you were only gluten free for a week at the time and that was just too complicated of a food for your healing belly. I can't imagine anyone anywhere being worried... -
It may be that your body is taxed by trying to repair celiac damage and you're worn down a bit. Flu happens. It can last quite awhile sometimes. If you are already gluten free for over a month, your endoscopy is likely to be negative because your body may have healed the damage in the spots they take biopsies from. That does NOT mean you aren't celiac...

ARCHIVED Why A Traditional Gluten Free Diet Fails
sandsurfgirl replied to Britgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I came across this guy on Facebook yesterday and spent quite a bit of time reading his website. All he does it put out teasers and try to get you to spend a ton of money for the "real" information. The price is outrageous, but it's typical of self published types. They can't get their stuff published by a real publisher because they either can't write or... -
Dietary changes are resisted like the plague for most people. That's the reason two GI docs talked me out of testing for celiac 8 years ago. They both said how hard the gluten free diet is and said things like "You don't want that." Well duh, of course I don't want it but if you have it, no amount of denying it or not testing for it will make it go away...

ARCHIVED Answers For Nausea
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Irishheart, I just don't know. I've been off the supplements for a week. Felt better for a couple of days then Thanksgiving rich foods made me sick again. It's been improving each day, but it's still there this morning. Mild, but there. -
ARCHIVED Still Angry Sometimes After 2 Years
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My concern with a vaccine would be that they are only looking at resolution of GI symptoms. Personally I wouldn't quit being gluten free because of a vaccine, but if it could lessen the impact of getting glutened that would be great. Saying that celiac affects 1% of the population makes me say "ARRRGH!" One percent is diagnosed but everything I've... -
ARCHIVED Answers For Nausea
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My adrenal glands weren't making enough aldosterone which regulates kidney function. It took 3 weeks to figure out what was going on and in that time my kidneys were dumping my salt and water. Eventually I was so dehydrated and my electrolytes were scary low. I ended up in the hospital for 10 days. For 7 days they were waiting on labs to figure out what was... -
ARCHIVED Answers For Nausea
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You guys are a lifeline! I was pretty down today. I went to the park with a bunch of moms and kids and that made me feel so much better. We homeschool, so that is extra challenge on top of everything else. -
ARCHIVED Answers For Nausea
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have been feeling so sad about this. So upset that I did this to myself. I was just so overwhelmed with everything going on at the time. I went off the iron and Vitamin D a week ago and it's getting a bit better but still not great. Still nauseous today and my appetite is low. GI doc said all my blood tests were good. Celiac titers good, so it's just... -
ARCHIVED Calling Expert Celiacs!
sandsurfgirl replied to KatieTattie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm not sure it's free. They just pay for it in other ways like tons of taxes. And they suffer when they can't get to the specialist forever or at all. It really all depends how important it is to you to get that official diagnosis. There are plenty of people who only had high IgA and every other celiac test was normal and they went gluten free and...
