  1. I think a lot of docs don't know what they're talking about. They have too few celiac patients and have only read about the disease. Like they say, within 6 months to a year, your blood levels should be "normal". Also, most people either feel well enough to stop seeing the doc by then, or still feel bad but have realized the doc has nothing left to offer...
  2. Hi Miriam, Like you, I felt great for the first several months gluten-free. Then I started to feel worse and worse. It did eventually balance out. It seems a pretty typical pattern from what I've heard annecdotally. Make sure you are eating a good nutritious diet, and getting enough calories. Merika
  3. Hi Sweetfudge, (((sigh))) husbands can take a long time to adjust to a diagnosis of celiac. You have my sympathy. I agree with tarnalberry too. It is often hard to tell what is from gluten/illness/general-poor-health. As you get more experience with eating gluten-free, you will have fewer issues with this. But it takes practice and practice takes time...
  4. Kaitlin, There's a Whole Foods in Westwood that has your usual supply of gluten-free stuff. I think you could walk/bike from ucla. Hth, Merika in Hollywood
  5. Hi Dahlia, A few years back, some of us on this board from LA got together. It was really fun to meet in person, after knowing someone online. I haven't been on the boards for probably over a year now, so I don't know what's going on, lol. Didn't even know about the LA celiacs on yahoo! I guess I should check back more often There is also an "official...
  6. Being in the room with gluten is not a problem. For example, my dh eats a gluten sandwich every day sitting across the table from me. Neither I nor ds gets sick. However, I will not let him bake his own bread in the kitchen. Any airborne gluten particles (like you'll see in the air if you put flour in a mixer) will be inhaled and some of this ultimately...
  7. Hathor, nestle chocolatier makes delicious dark chocolate the old fasioned way - with cocoa butter, NOT soy lecithin. it's a relatively new product and can be found in most major grocery stores next to the regular nestle chocolate baking chips. Merika
  8. Ps. (((wave))) to Juliet
  9. Eek! I would keep ds home that day, or insist on providing for ALL kids a gluten-free version (but that probably defeats the point of the project...) If *I* were in the class (an adult who can wash her hands...) I would skip that day...waaay too much airborne flour floating around guaranteed to make me sick. Hth, Merika
  10. Hi Melzo, The best advice I got was not to worry about it FWIW, my first pregnancy took a few weeks to conceive, was pretty much textbook and relatively easy, baby was 8 lb 10 oz and the midwife said after the birth that it was one of the biggest and healthiest looking placentas she'd ever seen. I had been celiac for years, was still undiagnosed and...
  11. Hi, It's been awhile since I've been here - big hi to everyone I'm thinking of trying the SCD to get rid of food allergies and feel better. I've heard great things about it from people with digestive trouble, but not so much from people who have celiac. I've heard it can be too rich (nuts, fats, etc) to digest easily. I've also heard it's really great...
  12. Oops, I forgot to copy these symptoms too of food allergies. Merika * night sweats * cradle cap (which I suppose is a rash of some kind, but people might not realize it) * picky about food (for older babies/toddlers) * change in temperament/demeanor suddenly (ie., sudden separation and stranger anxiety for the first time overnight) * frequent...
  13. It could be celiac. It could also be food allergies/sensitivities. My son becomes a completely different child when he ingests a minute amount of soy. He is also sensitive to egg. I was unknowingly celiac while pregnant with him, and I wonder if this is why he is sensitive to these foods (I am too). I've posted the list below from another list I'm on, that...
  14. I had a rep at a company tell me it was November 2006 that the labelling laws go into effect. All disclaimers, Merika
  15. Angie, You've got some really great advice on this post. And it's really great you'll have such good support for when your baby arrives Since you have a month still, you may want to look up your local LLL meeting. They encourage pregnant moms to attend a meeting before giving birth. You'll get to see nursing in action, ask any questions, and still...
  16. Wow, Carrie, thanks! I had no idea about the wine. I also don't drink the stuff in general, but still.... As for the rice topic, I tested allergic to rice when I did allergy tests a year ago. I just retested and am waiting for results. However, rice is one of the things I kept on eating anyway. Not because I LOVED it, but because I needed something to...
  17. Hi, My ds was a strictly breastmilk baby until 11 mos. He didn't start to consume sizable amounts of table food until 18 months. It's not unusual for babies with allergic tendencies to want to delay solids, they seem to know what's good for them. My ds is now 4 yo and very healthy and very tall for his age. On breastmilk alone, he was above the...
  18. The original Airborne is gluten free and soy free. I called a while ago. Some of the kids flavors contain either gluten or soy - sorry, can't remember which, I avoid both. My whole family has taken the original Orange flavor Airborne and been fine. Hth, Merika
  19. Gatorade seems to be one of those products that is constantly reformulating. For a few months last winter, all the flavors contained soy - which was listed, but I wasn't expecting it as it hadn't been there before, and then poof the soy was gone shortly thereafter. Also, gatorade type drinks should be cut in half or more with water, as they can cause cramping...
  20. I've been violently sick from it several times pre-gluten-free and have many non-gluten-free friends with the same experience. Somebody in charge there is just not keeping the food fresh/safe. Yuck! Merika
  21. Hi Judy, I live in Hollywood. There is a Trader Joe's on Santa Monica Blvd a few blocks west of La Brea. It's in a little strip mall kind of back from the street. Technically, the Trader Joe's is in West Hollywood. The Whole Foods is wonderful that Elonwy mentioned (don't eat from their deli though, whether you are gluten-free or not ). There's a Whole...
  22. Boiron's Cold Calm is gluten-free. It's easy-to-take homeopathic meds available at Whole Foods and some drug stores. most of Boiron's meds are gluten-free - I forget the ones that aren't, but they list the latin name for wheat or something on them - better yet, they'll tell you when you call the 800 number which ones to avoid. The Occillococcinum for...
  23. I've only run into this a few times. It usually has to do with a company wanting to keep their product details in house so that a competitor's product can't too easily copy them. It IS annoying. I think we should all make up our own letterhead, lol Merika
  24. This splitting hairs over is-the-gluten-still-there-or-not with some cooking method reminds me of the laws in Europe which say (as I understand, not living there) that anything with less than .05 somethings of gluten in it can be labelled gluten free. Hence, European wheat starch is considered gluten free because it is a high quality starch that has had ...
  25. Peter, Thank you! You gave me just the threads I was looking for I will bring the list with me when we go dog food shopping, and I think the Canidae was maybe what the adoption place was feeding the dogs, so that is good if we continue that. Vincent, yes you are right to be cautious. I have a 4 yr old (almost) who is waaay easier than a toddler...
