ARCHIVED Help Diagnosing My 5 Year Old Daughter!?!?!?
Merika replied to coralex's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Actually, that's the perfect situation for your dd, shoud you want to have her go gluten-free. Just order a mix of gluten-free cake batter, and make *everyone's* cupcake gluten-free. They'll never know Also, if you're going to have the 'scope done, don't go gluten-free until it's over. In the meantime, you could familiarize yourself with specialty... -
ARCHIVED Potty Training?
Merika replied to VydorScope's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You can start them as an infant. It's been in the news a lot lately. I've also done it in IRL. www.natural-wisdom.com is a good place to start. You can apply some of the same principles to a 2 year old. FWIW, most 2 year olds around the world are toilet trained, just here in the USA since Brazelton in the 1960s do we wait until kids are "ready" or three or... -
ARCHIVED Persistant Rash Around Mouth
Merika replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son gets a slight rash below his mouth, I think basically from licking dry lips, and his saliva ph must be off - this happens only when he has ingested soy (which he's allergic to). He also gets a red ring around his anus at the same time. Don't know if this helps, Merika -
There is no gluten in meat, no matter what they ate. There *could* be gluten in milk-based products. What you may have found at the restaurant (though most likely cross-contamination) is a chicken that was previously injected with a gluten-containing broth to make it appear plumper and fresher to the buyer. The chicken factory would be responsible for this...

ARCHIVED Feel So Guilty!
Merika replied to taweavmo3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I suppose a lot depends on the child's personality, but by age 2 1/2 my ds was asking anyone and everyone if something was gluten free and soy free. He's now 3 1/2 and still does. I gotta agree with Jnkmky - use this as a reminder of what gluten does, so that (hopefully) she will always ask you if something is gluten-free before she eats it (something... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Hyperthyroidism
Merika replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
mucho embarrasing but....(giggle) I was watching an infomercial for a hair-regrower based on Rogaine (you know, for balding men) - I don't know why since I have the thickest hair of anyone I know BUT they were saying it would take about 3 months for the hair to start to grow itself. If I recall correctly, you've had her gluten-free for a month or so? Maybe... -
Ok, maybe you know this already but the issue of cross-contamination is quite real and serious. From what I know here in the USA, mid-eastern food is typically eaten off shared plates. So if everyone has their bread and is dipping it in the hummus, you cannot eat the hummus (bread crumbs, even if you don't see them). What you can do is get into the...

i am confused. She has celiac? So she shouldn't be eating wheat and oats anyway right? How long has she been diagnosed? Merika

It is common for kids with food allergies to get this when they ingest the offending food - typically 1-4 days afterwards. I suppose it could happen in adults too? Merika

Whew, that is a lot! hang around on this board for a while, and you'll get some good ideas and a better sense of celiac and the (very good) prognosis for it. May I suggest 1) a rice cooker. Get a good brand like Zojirushi (sp?) with a timer. You can add your water and rice in the morning before work and program it to be done for whatever time you come...

ARCHIVED Juliano's Raw In Santa Monica - Restaurant
Merika replied to Merika's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Ok, so I slept great and the next day was great, and I'm getting the cookbook, lol Merika -
Congrats! I don't think you need to do anything special. As my very wise Chinese doctor said at my pregnancy when I asked what should I do he says "be happy" The best thing is to just be laid back and calm and peaceful and happy. Best wishes, Merika

Intestinal growing pains? Where do they come up with this stuff??? Have your son go in for blood work too. (sorry) Merika -
ARCHIVED Frustrated!
Merika replied to SherriRoy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sorry to hear you are still feeling badly. It does indeed sound like you have celiac. 6 weeks is not long enough to be on gluten for the body to produce antibodies and show lots of damage, if you've otherwise been gluten-free. Which also corresponds with your results, and the last set of tests which showed more damage. I would encourage you to look into... -
ARCHIVED How Many Poops Are Too Many Poops
Merika replied to heatherh's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
But that's for *celiacs* who are still recovering. Folks whose digestive tracts are normal and without celiac damage should be pooping once a day. Merika -

ARCHIVED How Many Poops Are Too Many Poops
Merika replied to heatherh's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, Kids over one year should be pooping once/day, IMO, same as adults. I know docs will say more or less often is "normal" - and yes in the sense that many people go more or less than once a day is typical - but IMO and in the opinion of other medical branches (ayurveda, for example) once a day is what *should* be happening with a healthy body. I... -
ARCHIVED Biopsy
Merika replied to kirstymorrison's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If your husband has been so sick he can barely get to the mailbox, seven weeks to perfect health would be a miracle worthy of a tv talk show. Your docs are under-informed. Seven weeks is however perfectly consistent with the results you are seeing. That your dh is feeling worse after going back on gluten is confirmation that eating gluten-free is helping... -
ARCHIVED Can't Do The Biopsy
Merika replied to Bonnie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Er, no. Myself, I lost a lot of weight (15 lbs) in a month, but then it stabilized and I remained that weight for 12 more years *while eating gluten*. I never had diarrhea (other than from the flu, lol). It took them 12 YEARS to diagnose me after presenting a top-notch teaching hospital with Major Celiac Symptoms - just not the ones they were looking for... -
ARCHIVED Daughter's Symptoms And Naturopathy
Merika replied to ERA's mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, I think Karen covered most of it But I want to add that she give herself a long time to let her body stablize after going gluten-free before deciding on things like birth control pills. The menstrual-related problems may well clear up all on their own in the next year, now that the underlying cause is being addressed. I too had/have the fatigue... -
ARCHIVED Thanks For The "duh" Moment
Merika replied to luvs2eat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
LOL! that is funny Merika -
Eggs is a pretty safe bet, especially if you order an omelette or ask them to make the egg in a separate skillet (not on the big shared griddle). And make sure they're using *real* eggs. make sure also the rice is *plain* as some places will season it, and then you either avoid it or find out what's in the seasoning. Lunch, well, fish is pretty safe (not...

ARCHIVED Question Re: Accidental Glutening
Merika replied to lorka150's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, it could well be from breakfast preparations. This is why I get sooo paranoid about cross-contamination eating out/at other houses. Occasionally, I'll have a day at home where I'm in the kitchen a lot - cleaning kitchen, cooking, feeding cat, etc - and i feel nearly OCD about washing my hands, lol. Like, this is the 3rd time in 15 minutes that... -
Hi, I'm veggie too and used to love eating at Indian restaurants. Now I get sick every time - so I no longer eat there. I also stopped buying indian spices and products from the indian stores. My own suspicion is that their spices are cut with flour as an anti-caking agent. And anything fried is right out, because of bread-goods being fried too. It...
