  1. If you are concerned about "hidden" sutff in the cheese, I suggest you buy Kraft products. They won't hide gluten. If something is used to keep cheese from sticking, I have only ever seen cellulose powder, which is gluten-free, but Kraft just puts cheese in the package.
  2. Food sold in the US must conform to US labeling laws, regardless of country of origin.
  3. Caramel color is one of those celiac urban myths that just won't go away. Here is Shelley Case's take on it, from Gluten-Free Diet A Comprehensive Resource Guide: [Emphasis in original]
  4. All vinegar except malt vinegar is gluten-free. Malt vinegar is always labeled as just that, "malt vinegar." Distilled vinegar is always gluten-free.
  5. I was diagnosed two days after my 46th birthday. The endoscopy a week earlier had shown severe damage to my villi. Healing took time, but I did heal. A follow-up endoscopy five years later was normal. All of my symtpoms have cleared. The only lasting issue is osteoporosis, a result of years of celiac-caused malnutrition. Your gluten-free future is bright...
  6. Thinking about absent sillies. I wish they would drop by and say hello. They are missed.
  7. Nope, no extra goodies from Skaught for me. Just more work to do.
  8. Bev, I can't see either of your proposed outfits. I just get box wif a red X like IE couldn't access the link. Say, it's for his birthday, right? You do have a birthday suit, don't you? 'Twould be perfect, no? Still bloody cold here. Global warming, my @$$!
  9. Hi, Andrew, Actually, the pinned answer is the answer to your primary question. New topics are reviewed by a member of the moderating team. The moderator examines the new topic, and then does something with it. If the topic is appropriate, and is in the correct forum, then the mod pins the topic. If the topic is in the wrong place, the mod will move...
  10. A brief summary of key points in the US food label laws: Wheat must be disclosed, along with 7 other common allergens. Barley, rye and oats are not included, so not all gluten is required to be disclosed. The disclosure can be made either in the igredients list, or in a "Contains:" statement accompanying the ingredients. Many companies do both, but that...
  11. I am a type one diabetic, and as such have been on insulin for decades. When my celiac symptoms increased in intensity 15 years ago, I began having frequent problems with hypoglycemia. It was baffling, because I would eat food loaded with carbs, but my blood glucose would drop instead of rising. Other times, I would have a normal response. Eventually,...
  12. I have type one diabetes, and so have been on insulin for decades. As my celiac symptoms increased in intensity, I had more and more incidents of hypoclycemia. I
  13. Where have all the sillies gone? What in Sam Hill is going on?
  14. These two statements contradict each other. 1 in 100 is 1%, not 10%.

To access your time settings, look at the top right where your user name is. Click the downward-pointing arrow to the right of it and choose "My Settings" from the pull-down menu. After making changes there, reload the index page. That should get it sorted.

I am seeing correct times on my posts and those by others. I am in the Eastern time zone. The server operates on Pacific time.
  18. Celiac disease is a autoimmune reaction to gluten, not an allergic reaction. The only treatment for celiac disease is strict adherence to a 100% gluten-free diet. That is why the doctor is suggesting the diet. As mushroom said, a positive response to the diet, when taken together with all the other factors, can confirm the diagnosis.
  19. Celiac disease is not an allergy to gluten. Damage to the intestines is caused by the autoimmune response. An allergy to wheat occurs independently of celiac disease. You can have one without the other, both, or neither one. False negatives on the biopsy are fairly common, especially in chldren. The damage may be patchy and only healthy samples might be...
  20. The short codes that work in the body of a post do not work in a signature. You can, however, insert an image tag. For example, to display you would insert [img=https://www.celiac.com/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif] For smileys on this board, you can obtain the url of the image file by right-clicking on the image. What exactly...
  21. In the US, Lea & Perrins is gluten-free. The version sold in Canada is made in Canada under licence and uses malt vinegar (the US one has distilled vinegar). It is the same recipe according to L&P--I guess it just calls for "vinegar" without specifying the source or type. I get the good gluten-free stuff with the help of a friend in Michigan.

    ARCHIVED Heart Burn

This has to be the most hotly debated subject on the board over the last four years. McDonalds fries in the United States (but not in other countries, and maybe not even in all parts of the US), have a flavor which is derived in part from wheat. Independent testing of the finished product has found no detectable gluten in the fries as served. Search...
  23. Good morning, Sillyville! Sunny but windy here. The temperature is -16C (4F), but pheels like -25C (-13F). BRRRRRRR!
  24. While weight loss is a common symptom (I lost 65 pounds), some people gain weight while eating gluten. This can lead to misdagnosis, as many doctors wrongly believe that fat people can't have celiac disease.
  25. I'll second the suggestion of VH. It is widely available in Canadian grocery stores. VH is a Con Agra brand, so all you have to do is read the label. Any gluten will be clearly disclosed. Most VH sauces are gluten-free.
