ARCHIVED If Your Kid Is "glutened" Should You Consider Vaccines?
psawyer replied to inskababy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you read the original post, she was not asking for help. She was stating (incorrectly) that some specific vaccines contain gluten, based upon ingredients they contain. In her second post, she acknowledges that she was mistaken, and that the ingredients about which she raised concerns are, in fact, gluten-free. Further posts about whether the vaccines... -
ARCHIVED If Your Kid Is "glutened" Should You Consider Vaccines?
psawyer replied to inskababy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Of course there are multiple issues around the vaccine question. But the original poster raised one and only one: gluten in the vaccines. Richard responded to that specific question, as did I. -

If this has happened it may be a violation of board rules. Please contact me via PM/email with the details. -

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is not a source of gluten. I have never encountered any injectable medicine which contained gluten in any form. -
ARCHIVED Glutino Bread Price Increase
psawyer replied to nb-canada's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't noticed, but it has been a couple of weeks since I bought Glutino bread. In the Toronto area, Loblaw stores carry Glutino products, but the selection varies widely from store to store. You might want to direct your inquiry to the owner/president of Glutino. He is Steven J Singer. You can telephone 1-800-363-3438, or email ssinger [at] glutino... -

Well, today was day one of the civil service strike in Toronto, and already the garbage is piling up. And then, there is the household waste that is not being collected. It would be enough to drive you to drink. But, you better stock up fast--the government monopoly liquor store is going on strike on Wednesday. It looks like a long, hot... -
ARCHIVED First Trip To The Gastro Didn't Go So Well
psawyer replied to Seamuskitty's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Julie, what an awful experience. Find another doctor. There are good ones out there. The good ones are the ones who will listen to you and discuss things with you. The bad ones don't listen and talk to/at you (one-way communication). I have encountered both types, and while the good outnumber the bad (in my experience), there are still a lot of the... -
ARCHIVED Any Celiac(s) From Canada
psawyer replied to Gerri's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hello, Pavla, and welcome to the board. Living in Dawson City will pose some challenges. It is a lovely place, but is small and somewhat isolated. My wife and I visited in the summer of 1994, well before my gluten-free days. My brother and his wife spent three months in Dawson City in the summer of 2007. If you are looking for specialty gluten-free... -

I'm not sure where she is at the moment, but she was heading for the Toronto Islands. You can only get there by boat, and the ferry is going on strike in 3 hours along with the rest of the city staff. There are private water taxis. -

ARCHIVED What Does Warn Mean?
psawyer replied to still tiredofdoctors's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Hi, Lynne, Each member has a warn level, which is initially zero (0%). Each member can see his or her own indicator, and if the level is not zero, clicking on the percentage will open a window showing the reason for the warning(s). The blocks change color as the warning level increases. Other members can not see your warnings, except for the moderators... -

Gosh, this quiet here today. After a miserable, wet, rainy, wet, soggy, wet, day yesterday, today is warm (but not hot) and sunny. =^..^= I'm working a rare Sunday at the shop. I think it has been a year since that last happened. Unless something unexpected happens, City of Toronto civic workers employees will go on strike in less than... -
ARCHIVED Is Yeast Gluten Free?
psawyer replied to River*'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Brewer's yeast is a byproduct of beer making, and is contaminated with barley. It is used as a flavor and not for leavening (it is already spent). Other yeasts are safe. -
We make bread crumbs by taking slices of gluten-free bread and chopping them up and putting them in the blender. We use a variety of different breads depending on what we have in the kitchen. Freshly baked bread doesn't make good crumbs--it is best if it is a few days old. We do up several slices worth at a time, and freeze what we don't immediately use....

We won't, suze...I'm here with you, relaxing on the back deck late in (our) evening, sipping on a lovely Martini. Well, Susie, it seems we have something else in common. I never wear a bra. I would be willing to to offer an assessment should we ever be fortunate enought to meet in person. But what I care about is what is between your... -
ARCHIVED Endoscopy Question
psawyer replied to Raynee's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The damage from celiac disease is usually not visible to the eye. In cases of extreme atrophy, the doctor may be able to see something, but even then, the biopsy will confirm that what the doctor saw was villous atrophy caused by celiac disease. Multiple samples should be taken because the damage may not be evenly spread--you can get some normal samples... -
ARCHIVED Product Database?
psawyer replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, and welcome to the board. I have been on the diet almost nine years now. Lists of gluten-free products sound good, but because of constantly changing formulas, they have problems. If a formula has changed, the package you have may not match the one the list is about. For example, recently, a number of Chex cereals were reformulated to be gluten... -
ARCHIVED Knorr Vegetable Bouillon (i'm New, Help, Please)
psawyer replied to jennifer304's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Welcome aboard. It is gluten-free. There are no questionable ingredients. Also, Knorr is a company that will clearly disclose any gluten source in their ingredients. If you don't see wheat, rye, barley or oats, by name, they aren't there. -
ARCHIVED Kingsford Charcoal
psawyer replied to gfree in macomb's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If by charcoal, you mean plain charcoal, it is gluten-free. But charcoal briquettes (the ones in the uniform rounded shapes) are formed with a binder to hold the ground charcoal together. That binder can contain wheat. We have a gas grill. so I haven't paid any interest in which brands are safe. -
ARCHIVED How Does Celiac Cause Migrains?
psawyer replied to Lisa16's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't know the specific reasons, but migraines are reported as a symptom of celiac disease. Prior to my diagnosis, I had severe migraines from time to time. After being on the gluten-free diet for some time, I realized that I had not had a migraine in over a year. I know I didn't directly answer your question, but this might be of some help. -

Perhaps you are sensitive to Open Original Shared Link Rennet is used in most cheeses to start the fermentation process. It is not typically found in foods other than cheese. I'm just guessing here, but if it isn't casein, that is the other thing that is common to cheese.
