  1. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) does not contain gluten. This is a controversial ingredient, and many people avoid it, but it is not something that celiacs need to fear as a gluten source.
  2. Testing for celiac disease is different from testing for an allergy to one or more of the gluten proteins. The test for celiac relies on detecting antibodies, which are only produced as a reaction to gluten, so for that you must be consuming gluten. But I'm not sure about allergy tests. Most allergy testing is done on the skin, and measures the reaction...
  3. I am a lot closer to Brampton than Emily, but I'm not really familiar with the area. It is on the NW corner of the city of Toronto, but I haven't been there is ages. It is close enough that you could look at Toronto for accommodations and activities.
  4. When I first started smoking, cigs cost a penny a pop. A pack of 40 was 38 to 40 cents, depending on the store. What a difference four decades makes. I quit almost twenty years ago, so haven't been following prices lately.
  5. I ate a bowl of the new gluten-free Rice Chex this morning at breakfast. If there was a problem I would have known by now. Life is good. (An angel who was traveling to the US brought me back some gluten-free Chex and a supply of US, gluten-free, Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce).
  6. Gawd, what the jalapeno were you thinking? Three? A beautiful place indeed, mais beaucoup de dollars. For other dives on a similar budget, consider Chateau Lake Louise and Jasper Park Lodge. I stayed at places like this when I had an expense account. The Fairmont property I liked best was the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, inside the walls and...
  7. It certainly is magnificent. We last drove it in 1994, on the way home from Alaska. Enjoy! And, in Banff especially, expect to see hordes of tourists from Japan, traveling on tour buses.
  8. Weekends are quiet here, and Sundays more so. I have heard of one person who refers to it as "the celiac difference." I also know somebody who says that if you follow the gluten-free diet carefully, then you no longer have celiac disease--you are cured. I guess that it is a matter of semantics and is open to discussion. For those of us who know...
  9. It did, but so far nobody has responded with an answer to the question. I don't know either, but this reply will again bump your question.
  10. We have had good results with the Glutino English Muffins, although we have never tried to make a pizza out of them.
  11. Many suitable food products exist, and most of them don't actually say "Gluten Free" on the label. Try these links for useful information: Unsafe ingredients. Safe ingredients. Open Original Shared Link If you don't see "wheat, rye, barley, barley malt, oats" on the labels, its not there, or hidden in "flavors, starches, etc." There are some...
  12. Whey is a milk product, and does not contain gluten.
  13. Yes, it will keep fine. If you don't use dry ice, ordinary ice will work. Three hours is not long enough for there to be a problem. For best results, put the frozen food in the cooler, and then put the ice (dry or ordinary) on top, and then tightly close the cooler. As a veteran of many Scout camps, I can tell you that food can be kept frozen 24 to 36 hours...
  14. I am following the plan as outlined by the boss. But the cats associate food with her. I come in the front door around feeding time. They all ignore me. JACQUIE comes in the door--three cats rush to her, meowing and rubbing her legs, expecting food. Meh. I don't count.
  15. Toronto had some very heavy rains yesterday around noon. I don't know how much came down, but it was flowing down the street in front of the shop inches deep. We are in an old, somewhat decrepit building. Our neighboUr, the owner of the patisserie (bakery) beside us, came in just after one o'clock and told me that he was getting water in his basement coming...
  16. At one time, the Heinz Organic Ketchup had gluten, but it no longer does. I don't know when it changed, but is not a recent change.
  17. Well, Em and I can sit back, relax, and have a drink. The liquor store employees have accepted a tentative agreement. Of course, due to panic buying over the last couple of days, the shelves are just about empty.
  18. No, the chances are not 99%. The chances that a first-degree relative of a known celiac will also be a celiac are about 1 in 10, as compared to 1 in 133 in the general population. There are many cases where in a family with multiple children, only one has celiac disease. The genetics are a factor, but it is also known that a "trigger" is needed to activate...
  19. I have had the procedure twice, and it really is not a big deal. I think you are more likely to be killed in a car accident on your way to the hospital. Or jaywalking anywhere in The Loop. You will be fine, Anne.
  20. There is a warp in the silly continuum, caused by an invisible duplicate post on page 2199. Moderators see Amanda's post at the top of page 2200, while everybody else sees it as the last post on page 2199. When Scott deletes the duplicate, we will all see Jess as Queen.
  21. In general, Canadian laws are stricter. In Canada, a food may not be labeled as gluten-free it contains any derivative from wheat, barley, rye or oats. For example, nothing may be labeled as "Gluten Free Oats." In Canada, wheat is not required to be disclosed as an ingredient, as it is in the US under FALCPA. However, most food companies voluntarily disclose...
  22. Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce. The US product is gluten-free and is even labeled gluten-free. The stuff generally sold in Canada is made in Canada under licence, and uses malt vinegar (gluten). There is a store in the Toronto area that sells the US product. A 10oz bottle is 4.95 CAD. (Contact me off-board if you want to know more.) If you are...
  23. We have had a lot of discussion here about many things. I want to bring the focus back onto the original questions. The practical question, for which a definitive answer seems to exist, is: Do these vaccines contain gluten? The majority seem to agree that they do not. The hypothetical question: If they did, in fact, contain gluten, would that make them...
  24. With about four hours to go, it looks like the booze strike is on. Beer and Ontario wine are available at other outlets, but spirits are not. Emily can cross the Ottawa River into Quebec and shop at the SAQ for liquor, or at numerous corner stores for beer and wine. The only gluten-free beer available in Ontario is sold only at the LCBO. I have a small...
  25. Two points (well, three). First, the FALCPA legislation only requires wheat to be disclosed. Other gluten sources (rye, barley and oats) are not included. Second, the presence of wheat (or any of the other seven listed allergens) may be made either in the ingredient list, or in separate "contains" statement. The label is legal if it is one place--it...
