  1. Welcome to our community. Caramel color is one of those celiac urban myths that just won't go away. Here is Shelley Case's take on it, from Gluten-Free Diet A Comprehensive Resource Guide: [Emphasis in original]
  2. You can not change it yourself. Send a Personal Conversation to 'admin' stating the new screen name you want and he can do it for you.
  3. No, this information contains multiple inaccuracies. I can't speak for the UK, but it is wrong for the US and Canada, both in terms of regulations and about foods likely to contain gluten.
  4. The original post came from the United States (moderators know things). The current "gluten-free" label rules in Canada, and the proposed updates, refer only to gluten in intentional ingredients. In the US, there are currently NO RULES. "May contain" statements are voluntary in both jurisdictions. Canada does have some strongly written guidelines about...
  5. You will have to make your own personal decisions about the level of risk you are willing to accept. In both of the examples you mentioned, I would say no. In the case of the pie, it may have been stirred up in the shell, causing cross contact. Even if that was not the case, the tips of your fork may make contact with the shell as you try to cleanly...
  6. Shauna, if you will take just one thought from me, it is this. Consider Lyme disease. A number of formerly frequent participants here who were experiencing extreme reactions to gluten and other foods which did not, in fact, contain gluten found their answer there. I am not trying to diagnose anything, just raising awareness of a possible answer. There...
  7. We don't delete stuff unless it is in clear violation of our rules. I think you may be looking for this old discussion. Perhaps you mean the more Lyme-specific one here.
  8. Ontario is by far the largest province in Canada by population. It is the only one where the provincial health plan will not pay for blood testing for celiac disease. It will pay for an endoscopy, though.
  9. All first-degree relatives of persons with celiac disease should be tested. You already qualify because of your father.
  10. Happy Birthday, Tiffany!
  11. Actually, it is not off-topic. Lyme could well explain why some of these members are sill sick even after adopting the gluten-free diet. The Lyme Disease topic is here. It has been quiet for a while, but is not gone.
  12. I added that warning label about 12 hours ago. That was several hours after I moved it to the SUPER SENSITIVE forum from the general COPING area.
  13. Weluvgators, I recognize that you and a few others are super-sensitive to gluten. We have set up this area on the board for your benefit. I stand by my statement that Shauna (T.H.) reports a level of sensitivity that is far beyond anything we have seen in the time I have been here. Worrying about the diet of animals whose manure was used as fertilizer...
  14. I have been participating here for almost seven years, and lurked for months before actually joining. Shauna, the level of hyper-sensitivity to gluten that you describe is not just unusual. In all my time here, it is UNIQUE. For most of us, it is way over the top. I don't dispute that these are true stories of your life, and I feel sorry that you have...
  15. There is a more recent discussion here. That one includes links to external sources.
  16. I agree. I wonder if NemmaNoo can provide a source for the claim.
  17. I looked at the linked page. I do not find it credible. "Brown rice syrup is a natural sweetener produced from fermented cooked rice..." Okay, so it is "cooked..." But then, the question "Is it raw?" comes up: "Yes, pure brown rice syrup is raw" -- I guess somehow it got uncooked? And yet: "No, because sometimes commercial brown rice syrup...
  18. Perhaps between now and her next appointment, mom could "develop" serious diarrhea and bloating. Hard to prove, but that would make the shoe fit.
  19. A WTH moment this afternoon. I deliver to a few customers who have mobility issues. I did a delivery this afternoon and was driving back toward the store on Toronto's main drag, Yonge Street. I came by a construction site where there was a black truck with a crane attached. Painted in large yellow block letters on the side of the truck: MAMMOTH ERECTIONS...
  20. Doritos refers to a brand which covers a number of products. Some of them contain wheat, but it is not from the MSG. MSG is gluten-free. Artificial colors are not the best thing for you, but they are also gluten-free.
  21. If it just said "seasonings," you would be correct. But in this case the contents of the seasonings are given in a parenthesized list after the word. So, in this case, we do know what is in them.
  22. ElseB, you are misinformed about the new regulations. Like the current regulations, they do not address contamination issues: "These amendments will not apply to food allergens or gluten that may be present in the prepackaged product as a result of cross-contamination. The cross-contamination of prepackaged foods with food allergens or gluten are unique...
  23. Disney properties are all very accommodating for our needs. The food establishments on site are all aware. You can ask at customer service when you arrive and they can provide information about gluten-free options.
  24. Things are up and down. Energy costs are up. The local economy is down. Competition is up. Business is way down. Taxes are up.
  25. Oh, you really don't want to know.
