  1. Eating beans and fibrous vegetables could also contribute to the problem. For me personally, too much meat even causes this. I agree, maybe you could just eat rice, fruit, juice, etc. until you're free of gas. Then add the Mac and cheese, for example, and then you'll know for sure.
  2. Actually, the easiest way to "detox" the liver is to avoid animal proteins and fats. Gerson therapy, which is a well-known alternative cancer treatment, is entirely based on the cleansing of the liver. It advocates fresh juices and bans any meat, fat, and most dairy. Besides secreting bile (carrying liver waste), the liver has two vital functions:...
  3. Same here, no tapioca for me. I'll try Betty Crocker. I actually made Pamela's brownies today, but wasn't too crazy about them...like Yoshi said, I think it's because I'm used to eating the whole pan!!! I've heard before that people often crave the foods that they're allergic to. In fact, my favorite change since going gluten-free, psychologically...
  4. I use coconut oil for moisturizer (awesome! lasts forever! and doesn't clog pores!) and baking soda for my teeth and/or Tom's of maine. I am currently on the search for a good shampoo with as FEW ingredients as possible, and preferably ones I can pronounce. I hate looking at the ingredients in most shampoos and not knowing whether "Methylchloroisothiazolinone...
  5. Hey Jeffiner (love the name), I was throwing up every day too, probably at my lowest point, right before I went gluten-free. But instead of losing weight while that happened, I actually gained a few pounds. I'm sure it was because, after throwing up, my body felt so deprived of nutrients and glucose that, look out pantry!...I would just scarf down food...
  6. I got worse at first. But now I don't see it as "worse" than as "more sensitive"--to dairy, harsh grains, and most refined foods. It's funny how the moment you let go of the main baddy--gluten--your body suddenly goes "Ahem" and demands a break from other things, as well. I think of my body as being in "cleaning" mode right now, and the less bad foods...
  7. Hi Elastigirl, I don't know whether it has to do with the chickens being grain-fed or not, but it could also have to do with the hormones or antibiotics in the chicken. Like a lot of us, your son could be very sensitive to certain foods now, and that may extend to preservatives/growth hormones/etc. Just as some people are very sensitive to xanthan or guar...
  8. p.s. I recommend a sushi place for dinner, since they usually don't have a lot of wheat lying around (lower risk of c/c). But call ahead of time and talk to the chef, if possible! You can order sashimi (raw fish) if you want to be safe, since the rice could be carelessly sprinkled with crumbs or whatnot. Or, like others have suggested, cook your own...
  9. I totally understand! Discussing flattened villi and abnormal bowel movements aren't very "romantic" first date conversations. However, consider this: it could possibly lead to a very interesting conversation! If she knows nothing about it: great! She'll probably have loads of questions and you can educate her. She's a girl, is probably familiar...
  10. I lost weight on this diet, mainly because I had to give up dairy as well as gluten. (I used to overeat on both.) I also don't eat any of the gluten-free packaged foods because I'm still healing, which is probably helpful. And ever since my (ex) favorite chocolate started included dairy and possibly wheat (damn you, Green & Blacks!), I've stopped...
  11. Hey! That's really good news. I read somewhere--maybe? somewhere?--that when you first go gluten-free, your blood sugar drops due to lack of carbs. So then you'll crave lots of other carb sources (i.e. cookies! chocolate! sweets!), and probably overeat on those. Does that ring true? I've learned from this board to stay away from all those tempting...
  12. OMG... Sandsurfgirl, this story will haunt my nightmares forever! I'm so sorry about that. Pre-this diet, I'd have bad spells where I wouldn't go for over a week. I'd think, "Is this normal?" But I never pictured this scenario. How long did you "not" go till this happened? My symptoms EXACTLY! When I'm glutened, it's shut-down mode, no...
  13. As soon as I eat anything disagreeable, I bloat up (and get constipated). I feel your pain! Yes, an elimination diet is the way to go. It helped me tremendously. Your body IS reacting to something; keeping a food diary will help you pinpoint what it is. Experimenting in this way helped me discover that, besides no gluten, my body developed...
  14. Thanks Welda and jackay, I agree we ought to be proud! This was my first gluten-free holiday and I made it through. Yay, me...and us! People were eating gluten and dairy all around me. But like you, jackay, I was feeling good because I was healthy. I had to be on the ball as far as food preparation, bothering the cook, getting the first serving...
  15. Your story sounds like mine: I developed colitis after working in a bakery for close to a year. I never ate the food, but the cross-contamination was enough to make me sick. I started feeling much better after a month of going gluten-free...BUT this was only after I cut out dairy, soy, corn, processed food, etc. I had no choice; as you must know,...
  16. Thank you all! Your advice is really appreciated. As far as making up excuses, I guess it's because I hardly believe it myself sometimes...that I could sick off of one little crumb! I think some of my friends/acquaintances would just go, "?! seriously?!" I've told my two closest friends and they're incredibly understanding, and that's been encouraging...
  17. I have been gluten-free (also dairy/egg/anything hard to digest-free) for a month and a half now. I have been patient with myself and kept an upbeat attitude. I generally look at the bright side: I am eating a LOT healthier; I have lost ten pounds and am at my set-point weight; my body is happy and healing for the first time in 10-15 years; and (relief...
  18. I can't help here, but I'd like to here more about that cleanse. Were you on antibiotics because of the candida? Yup, I had to cut out dairy and soy, 100%. Have you done this? It's not necessarily for "forever," just until you heal. I also cut out corn, gluten-free baked goods, and beans because they were way too hard on me. It sounds like a...
  19. Hey! I was never officially diagnosed. I'd also like to know for sure, but I am just WAY too sensitive to go back on a wheat diet (god, we're like twins ). But that's all right, because based on my experience with the elimination diet, I either have celiac or I'm very, very gluten intolerant. For example, I got "glutened" (glutenized? gluteneezed...
  20. I don't know either! I think it may just be because, as we grow older, our body isn't able to handle things as well as before. College can also be stressful, which lowers the immune system, etc. And I'm glad that I read your post, because it sounded so similar to mind. It's such a relief to hear this stuff from someone else!
  21. That's great that you've improved overall. It's also good to hear that your doctor is supportive! My dad is a (retired) doctor and he looked at me like this when I told him I was reacting badly to dairy and gluten. Grains are on the bottom of the food pyramid, after all. I sound a lot like you, except you caught it earlier. I got noticeably sick...
  22. Hi there! I'm also gluten and lactose intolerant. Yay !? Seeing as we're in the same boat, I'll just jump in with some advice: First of all, I am curious to know how long/how severely you were sick before you changed your diet. Five months is a long time, but your body could still be in the "please be gentle with me" stage of recovery...
  23. I'm a little late to the topic here, but I'd like to make this note: I hardly smoke pot (despite the fact that my boyfriend is a licensed grower), except when I am REALLY hurting. I treat my body with respect, and I use this particular herb in a way that is respectful; as in-only when necessary. I'm a little extreme, because I'll usually wait until I'm...
  24. This is SO helpful. I'm completely new and wandering around lost here, so thank you.
