ARCHIVED Need Advice: Cafateria Style Meals For 3 Days
Skylark replied to RiaG14's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Everybody is different. There was an Italian study that is cited a lot, where people were given placebo, 10mg of gluten, or 50mg of gluten for three months. The placebo group did best, and the 50mg group had worsened biopsies. The 10mg group was in-between with 6 of the 13 people showing no biopsy change at the end of the study. This means it's possible... -
ARCHIVED Is There A Lab That Tests Food?
Skylark replied to Ox on the Roof's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you buy the test strips and get an interesting result, please let us know. I agree about not trying to sue the company or anything, but you might save other people around the forum some misery if you do find gluten. -
ARCHIVED Need Advice: Cafateria Style Meals For 3 Days
Skylark replied to RiaG14's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wait, you've only been gluten-free for a week? I'm going to go against the flow here. If I were you, I wouldn't sweat it. You're not likely to have a serious reaction to a little CC and you can "start the timer" on your REAL gluten-free diet when you return. I don't think small amounts of CC for three days will make a big difference at this stage of the... -
It's probably not the protein that's the issue. Beans, nuts, grains, and other seeds are hard to digest if you don't soak them. They have phytic acid, enzyme inhibitors, lectins, and some difficult-to-digest starches that can all cause trouble. Nuts need to be soaked with a little salt anywhere from 4-12 hours depending on size and the type of nut, then...

That one is an allergy test, not what you need. All the single allergens are $15. You cold try ordering just TTG if the $177.25 celiac antibody comprehensive panel is too expensive. Open Original Shared Link

I've never heard of that torch test. Sounds like it really helped you! I'll have to see whether I can get any hints that way because I think I'm still intolerant to something I'm eating. As far as sugar, are you eating a bunch of starchy gluten-free substitute foods? They can have a really high glycemic index and send you on a blood sugar roller-coaster...

That looks like a great service! They are using Labcorp in my area, which is the same lab my doctor's office uses.

ARCHIVED Help Me Decode Tests!
Skylark replied to 1974girl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh, gosh. If these were my kids I would take BOTH off gluten and never look back! This doctor is an idiot. (We find a lot of those around here.) If you wait for the kids' celiac to become severe, you risk stunting their growth and you risk the 8-year old also getting thyroid problems. First, developing celiac disease is a process and the single TTG... -
ARCHIVED Iga Result (4)
Skylark replied to DebbieM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
TTG is the type of IgA. Anti-TTG IgA is an autoimmune antibody to a protein in your body called tissue transglutaminase (TTG for short). It's most often an indication that you're celiac, though it can come up in rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory bowel diseases. It's hard to get a positive blood test, so you should take even a low positive very... -
I don't know what to think any more. The way dietitians break down foods makes my head spin. We clearly need a lot more fish and fish oil than most Americans get, and the neurosis about cholesterol has given eggs an undeserved bad name. Saturated fat in studies is mostly from either stockyard beef or cows that are bred to overproduce milk. It's high in...

Sorry, but you need to tell us which kind of IgA. Some are more specific for celiac than others. -

WooHoo!!!! So glad to hear you're staying upbeat through all this. I hope the surgery goes well. -
I'm sorry to hear you're so ill. I was tested for IC once but luckily I didn't have it. My pain turned out to be endometriosis. Ensure is probably what you need and it is gluten-free. Ensure is a medical drink designed for people who aren't eating very well. It's much better than Slim-Fast or other diet drinks because it's designed for complete nutrition...

ARCHIVED Results - Does This Mean I Do Not Have Celiac?
Skylark replied to 3groovygirls's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The blood test is negative, but it is negative in 20-30% of people with celiac disease. With your daughter celiac and your extremely low weight, your doctor is still concerned with good reason. -
I am glad to hear that your friend has found a diet that works for her! The Swank diet is controversial. There are equal numbers of people with MS (which may be celiac) who have gotten well gluten-free/CF. Swank diet includes omega-6 fatty acids, which are inflammatory as well as omega-3. Part of the benefit may be getting rid of trans-fats and certain...

ARCHIVED Self Diagnosis
Skylark replied to Curlyqueen's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I wasn't getting any help from doctors and celiac wasn't a "hot topic" back when I figured out my inability to eat gluten. I was diagnosed with IBS and gastritis and told to avoid coffee. If only they had said wheat... Your doctor can rule out Crohn's while you're on the gluten-free diet. Alternatively you can go back on gluten and see if your symptoms... -
As Peter says, some gluten intolerant people are celiacs with a negative test. However, there are a growing number of studies on non-celiac gluten intolerance, where the gluten causes a lot of inflammation in the intestines but the autoimmunity is not present. The inflammation can cause malabsorption and affect joints, nerves, and your thyroid as well as...

ARCHIVED Quest Or Labcorp?
Skylark replied to researchmomma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Quest: Celiac Panel Method This panel includes a test for tTG IgA antibodies (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA]) and total IgA concentration (immunoturbidometry). When the tTG IgA test is positive, an EMA IgA antibody test is performed (immunofluorescence assay); if positive, the EMA titer will be determined and reported. If the IgA concentration... -

I'm glad to hear it. I hope with the whole foods focus you will feel better in general about what you're eating. I'd recommend reading Sally Fallon's Nourishing Traditions if you're going to focus whole foods. It's a real eye-opener about the American diet, and it tells you how to prepare whole foods in traditional, nourishing ways. Good luck with the... -

Poor thing. I can see where ablation wouldn't work, but doctors can remove the uterus and spare ovaries. That's what Mom wishes she had done. -

ARCHIVED Help Me Decode Tests!
Skylark replied to 1974girl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
She is celiac. Endomysial antibodies are EXTREMELY specific for celiac disease, and the "simplification" of the villi is the beginning of the autoimmune damage. Antibodies often precede severe villous atrophy and it's a blessing for your daughter that it was caught early, before there was a lot of damage. She won't have her growth stunted. The positive... -
Things build up in your fat like mercury and pesticides. Fat isn't turned over very fast. When you lose weight, the stuff built up there has to go somewhere, usually into your bloodstream. I really haven't a clue about whether gluten (or gliadin) goes into fat. Supposedly it takes months for casomorphin to work its way out of your brain, which is...

ARCHIVED I Had Hoped To Never Return To This Place
Skylark replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Um... no. Yes, PSC is pretty strongly associated with celiac disease. Interestingly, it is often diagnosed by biopsy rather than antibodies. One article documents that people with PSC are more likely have false negatives on the blood tests than other celiacs. Sadly, all the articles I've found specifically say the gluten-free diet cures the malabsorption... -
Adipose tissue definitely stores some interesting stuff. I heard a story of a woman who lived near a pesticide-sprayed farm. She started losing weight quickly on a low-carb diet and ended up with acute pesticide poisoning. This is from a reliable doctor who was smart enough to figure what was happening and treat her correctly. Lisa, bioaccumulation...
