It's an eye-opener, isn't it?

DPP-IV was ineffective in clinical trials. The Alvine enzymes only worked for small amounts of CC. There is no pill that will suddenly allow you to eat a bagel.

ARCHIVED Re-Testing For Celiac
Skylark replied to StephKelly's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What, exactly, were the results that lead your doctor to say you were "gluten sensitive"? That doesn't sound like a negative celiac test. Celiac disease is progressive and yes, you can start with feeling ill from gluten and no blood/biopsy and progress to positive blood/biopsy. There are triggers like illnesses, stress, or pregnancy that can cause someone... -
ARCHIVED Two Docs With Differing Opinions
Skylark replied to AVR1962's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Doctors see people who flatly refuse life-saving lifestyle changes every day. They see people with emphysema who still smoke, alcoholics who are dying of liver failure and still drinking, and huge numbers of people with metabolic syndrome who could change their lives by losing 50 lbs. Most refuse the lifestyle changes and ask for pills. It makes some doctors... -
Poor little one. I sure understand you refusing to gluten challenge with her. There is some information on the opiate-like peptides here. I've found more information in the scientific literature on the milk peptides, called casomorphins, but gluten definitely has similar actions to milk. Open Original Shared Link By the way, a doctor is not likely...

ARCHIVED All Bestlife Products Are Gluten Free
Skylark replied to The Horticulturalist's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They don't put it on the packaging because once the FDA gets around to passing a gluten law it will be misbranding, like putting "fat free" on something that is naturally fat-free. Out of curiosity, why would you have expected gluten in the Bestlife sticks? I would have read the label and been completely comfortable that it was gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED First Christmas As A Celiac
Skylark replied to eborzecki's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't think you can decline something like a Christmas communion wafer without explaining the situation. It might be easiest to show up with some gluten-free wafers to break with people. Recipes are here. Open Original Shared Link You'll need to talk to your mother and father-in-law and explain that you need a little support in the situation. The... -
You did that backwards. How long was she gluten-free before you got the celiac test? The test doesn't work on people who have been gluten-free for a couple months. It can also be hard to get positive tests in kids. With the family history it would make sense to keep her on the diet and see if it helps. The flour cravings suggest she is getting the...

ARCHIVED Mother Drives Me Nuts Cooking Gluten Laden Foods
Skylark replied to catlover0329's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As IrishHeart pointed out, nothing out of your mother's kitchen would likely be safe for a celiac because of the flour cross-contamination anyway. It's hard to know what your mother was thinking, but it does seem pretty inconsiderate to send two loaves of gluten bread. You getting sick is your own fault. You chose to play "gluten roulette" with food where... -
I have to wonder if you are reacting to the Nystatin rather than experiencing die-off, since it's going for this long and you feel it after every dose.

ARCHIVED Question About Carbs With Dinner
Skylark replied to alex11602's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You are lucky that she loves so many healthy foods! She will be FINE eating rice for her starchy food until she gets interested in something else. -
ARCHIVED Whole Grain Flour Mix - Paralysis By Analysis
Skylark replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I was really liking oat flour too, until I went off grains entirely. I wouldn't call it a neutral taste though. I was making oat scones and Scottish bannock bread with the oat flour and they had a wonderful oat flavor. -
ARCHIVED Question About Carbs With Dinner
Skylark replied to alex11602's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Is there diabetes in your family that has you so worried about your children's blood sugar? It's really normal for a kid to like something (potatoes) then dislike it, then like it again. They go in cycles with the food. I never know what my picky nephew will be eating when they come to visit. Just give her a taste when you make potatoes for everyone... -
ARCHIVED Struggling To Get Dr To Test For Celiac.
Skylark replied to missingno's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'll second adab8ca. Is there any way to get to a different doctor? I know the gluten-free food allowance would be useful, but you may just have to go gluten-free on your own and see if it helps. -
ARCHIVED Lettuce For Lunch At Hospital Event.
Skylark replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Way to go! I love your question "Why does it bother you so much that I can't eat what you're eating?" Glad you were smart enough to bring your lunch and didn't get stuck eating CC'd lettuce! -
ARCHIVED Question About Carbs With Dinner
Skylark replied to alex11602's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Of course she dumps it on the floor. Foods you really dislike cause you to gag and if you eat enough you'll get nauseous and possibly throw up. Do you really mean to do that to your kid? You can turn eating into a real battleground that way. (It sounds like you already have.) My sister-in-law did that with my nephew, tried to force him to eat foods. He... -
ARCHIVED Question About Carbs With Dinner
Skylark replied to alex11602's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Potatoes or rice with dinner have me asleep on the couch in an hour. Zzzzz.... My blood sugar is far more stable since I've eliminated grains, starchy foods, and refined sugar. I do eat fruit, but it doesn't put me to sleep or bounce my blood sugar around the way rice or potatoes used to. You have to eat protein and fats to feel satisfied without the... -

ARCHIVED What's The Scoop On gluten-free Mixes With Soy Cc Statements?
Skylark replied to missy'smom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I know exactly how you feel. I went off gluten in 2005, was able to eat dairy and soy again in 2006. I started feeling bad last year and it seems I am dairy intolerant again and trying to figure out what other foods are leaving me foggy and fatigued. I've eliminated most soy (still a little in my fish oil), grains, dairy, and am working on nightshades.... -
ARCHIVED Beyond Confused! Help Plz!
Skylark replied to hspichke's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yeah, clotting disorder and migraine with aura definitely means no combination contraceptives. It's really bum luck that the pregnancies didn't make it go away. I had an aunt with terrible endometriosis but it went away after her first pregnancy. I never had kids so I've been on combination contraceptives for many years to keep it at bay. There are... -
ARCHIVED Beyond Confused! Help Plz!
Skylark replied to hspichke's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've been on Lupron twice. It is a godsend for endometriosis and I wouldn't call it dangerous. The surgery is worse - I had that too - lupron worked better for me. You only take lupron for six months at a time and the endometriosis mostly goes away for a few years, sometimes permanently. You can get pretty obnoxious hot flashes but that's about all. ... -
ARCHIVED What's The Scoop On gluten-free Mixes With Soy Cc Statements?
Skylark replied to missy'smom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Buy yourself the GAPS book for Christmas. You'll make it through the holidays. I am bracing for a grain-free/dairy-free/soy-free/refined sugar-free Christmas so I know what it's about. Try to focus on companionship and family rather than food. It really helps. If you have a high-energy day, do some scratch baking and make something that won... -
Hi and welcome. Don't doubt yourself. Your immune system can find and kill a single virus. What makes you think it would miss a particle of flour that is a hundred times larger? Or a crumb which is enormous in comparison? Many people have stronger reactions to gluten once they are gluten-free. Around the board we think it's because your immune system...
