ARCHIVED I Had Hoped To Never Return To This Place
Skylark replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'll chime in too. My mom had a hysto for fibroids and they talked her out of having ovaries removed too. She really, really regrets the ovaries. Even after menopause they make some hormones. -
ARCHIVED You Have Ibs, That's It (Please Offer Your Opinion)
Skylark replied to Ginger7's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi and welcome. IBS is a symptomatic diagnosis. We like to say it stands for "I be stumped". You sure sound like you could be celiac to me! You have a truckload of symptoms including the so-called IBS, weight loss, liver enzymes, low vitamin D and I bet your lowish hematocrit is from borderline anemia, not really good hydration. Your total IgA of 87 is... -
Studies show 1000 mcg/day will reverse a deficiency. Glad to hear you're at least having less diarrhea. Maybe you already know this, but for nervous system damage you also want to eat animal fats and cholesterol generously. The myelin you are trying to rebuild is made of essential fatty acids and phospholipids you get in animal foods. It also makes...

Irish oats have been tested and have too much wheat. If you can find them, Bob's Red Mill makes certified gluten-free oats.

ARCHIVED I Had Hoped To Never Return To This Place
Skylark replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Heh. I never though of mail to my body but I sure know the feeling. I really wish I could get my misguided immune system to stop attacking my thyroid. I needed that gland, dammit! Please, please, please don't ever feel bad for coming here to ask for help. We are all here on the board to reach out a hand when a fellow celiac is in need, no matter how... -

ARCHIVED The goodness in gluten - Hindustan Times
Skylark replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
The point of the RESEARCH, not the stupid press article, was that going gluten-free can have a serious impact and that we need support. Hopefully studies like this will improve things for folks whose doctors completely lack empathy for how big a change the diet really is. -
ARCHIVED I'm Tired Of Cooking!
Skylark replied to bartfull's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Rival Crock-pots are designed to be left unattended, according to the manufacturer. Open Original Shared Link The only concern would be if you suspect wiring problems in your house, but if that's the case ANY appliance left plugged in could cause a short. I leave mine all the time because I'm doing so many long-simmered broths. Use common sense. I always... -

Don't even get me started on nutrition. Eating actual, nourishing food is so far out of the American mainstream it's mind-boggling. -
ARCHIVED The goodness in gluten - Hindustan Times

I still don't think it's the same. Vegetarian/veganism is VOLUNTARY. They choose the dietary restrictions. Sure, a lot of vegetarians like to act indignant when there aren't many food choices but in my experience it's usually because they are trying to impose their beliefs and agenda on those around them, not because they will go home and have days of... -
ARCHIVED The goodness in gluten - Hindustan Times
Skylark replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Not the same. Religious restrictions are voluntary and everyone in a social circle follows them. Same with vegetarianism/veganism. Gluten-free requires people to give up a food so fundamental it's been labeled the "staff of life". You argue about the word "slew" but the ingredients list to avoid with celiac disease is pages long and gluten is so common... -

Suzanna has multiple autoimmune diseases. I know you're trying to offer hope, but I think the chance that the villous damage and recovery isn't celiac disease is slim. It's not what her doctor who did the endoscopies is saying. Also, there are growing reasons to stay off gluten (and casein) with autoimmune diseases because of the bad effects the opiate... -

Skylark replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
But the only way to live is to face your fear. To do otherwise is the path to madness, which you are experiencing. You can be free, but freedom isn't what you think it is. Freedom has nothing to do with eating what you want. If you think about it, you were never "free" to eat just anything - for example you can't live on only your favorite cookies.... -
ARCHIVED Type 1 Diabetes - Triggers From Celiac Or Dairy?
Skylark replied to alicewa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Heaven only knows. New drugs have all sorts of unpleasant, unintended side effects they don't figure out until after it's on the market and tens of thousands of people have taken it. -
ARCHIVED The goodness in gluten - Hindustan Times
Skylark replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
The journalist is an idiot. On the other hand, the research paper is quite interesting. The researchers don't suggest abandoning the diet. They say the study results mean health professionals treating woman with celiac disease need to be aware that the diet creates considerable psychosocial stress that needs to be addressed. (Duh!) As we would expect... -

(((hug))) You poor thing. I'm so sorry to read that you are going through all this. It sounds to me like you need some help working through your feelings about the gluten-free diet. I'm not sure you ever gave yourself a chance to get through the grief of a lifelong dietary change. It seems like you've fought and denied and fought some more, which is... -
ARCHIVED Thyroid And Immunity Questions
Skylark replied to Booghead's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've had very reasonable care for my Hashimoto's from a PCP until very recently when it got bad. Doctors treat mild thyroid problems all the time and there are plenty of people who just need a little levothyroxine. Having trouble with colds and exercise are classic hypo symptoms. If the levothyroxine doesn't sort things out, then you need an endocrinologist... -

Glad you liked the link. I do almost the reverse of Babs because I don't like to do much before I leave for work. I prep everything in the crockpot liner in the evening after work and throw it in the fridge. In the morning all I have to do is put the liner in the crockpot and turn it on. I come home to a warm dinner. You might also appreciate... -
ARCHIVED Biocard Home Test For Coeliac
Skylark replied to Lizzy A's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi and welcome to the board. My understanding of Biocard is that a second line is a positive result, even if it's dim. It's unlikely that only two weeks of gluten-free would mess up the testing - it may be that you just don't have a high titer of celiac antibodies. It will be interesting to see if your blood testing agrees with Biocard. I hope... -

ARCHIVED Walmarts Great Value Salsa
Skylark replied to spryng's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would eat it. It sounds like a legal statement if it's on the tomatoes too. If you have a lot of Great Value products it would be expensive to replace. I'd eat foods without any wheat ingredients and gradually replace them with a better labeled brand. Remember that this is a lifelong diet shift. Eating the Great Value foods you have on hand and... -
ARCHIVED Type 1 Diabetes - Triggers From Celiac Or Dairy?
Skylark replied to alicewa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Two strains isn't enough. In the GAPS book Campbell-McBride says: 1) As many species as possible. 2) A mixture of strains from different groups. A combination of representatives from the three main groups, Lactobacilli, Bifidobacteria, and soil bacteria (often Bacillus) usually works best. 3) At least 8 billion cells per gram; she considers therapeutic... -
ARCHIVED New Laws In Uk = Stupid ?
Skylark replied to tennisman's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, stupid. At least your country HAS laws, though. We have a useless congress who can't even manage to sort out a budget, let alone pass food labeling legislation. -

ARCHIVED Corn Problems?
Skylark replied to bbdailey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My dairy issues seem dose-related. I got the wrong plate of scrambled eggs by mistake over vacation and they had a little milk. I didn't notice any reaction. That led me to think maybe I could have a nice slice of cheese and there was brie around. I thought I got away with it yesterday, but then the fog hit today. Oops. The brie was almost worth feeling...
