  1. Reporting in doctor's appointment: I have my first meeting with my naturopath tomorrow afternoon. I can't wait because I'm so tired of feeling so awful all the time. Hopefully, I'll be on the path to good health soon, and I'm sure I'll have lots of questions for you all tomorrow night! Thanks again for this thread; it's really like a gift for me...
  2. AHHH! Sylvia Plath is my favorite author, too! What level English do you teach? I teach first-year composition and technical writing at VA Tech. I LOVE Sylvia Plath; part of my graduate work focused on her (though my specialization is in composition/rhetoric). I also love, love, love Harry Potter (not as high-brow, huh? ) How about Harry...
  3. Okay, let's see then...I teach English...English spice? Or does that sound too much like an icky cologne?
  4. Um, I could be newbie spice? Thanks for thinking of me, Andrea!
  5. I'm happy for you, Laura! I hope this is the beginning of getting your health under control and to many better days ahead!
  6. Almost all of their products are gluten free (I've seen oats in one of their sensitive skin facial moisturizers). However, Dove will clearly label for wheat, oats, barley, or rye, so if you read the ingredients and don't see one of those words, you're in the clear. I've never seen gluten in any of the shampoos, conditioners, hair products, or body lotions...
  7. Cool website, Tom--thanks for posting it. Just briefly browsing it showed some useful info. I've got it bookmarked so I can check more into it later.
  8. Andrea--The picture is from this winter when I went to Cornwall, England, over Christmas break (I teach English at a university and can only afford to go to England in the winter!). My boyfriend is from London, and we went and stayed with his mother for a week or so. It was *freezing* but it was beautiful. I'd love to go when it's actually warm outside...
  9. Thanks for everyone's comments about seeing the naturopath; I'll definitely keep you posted. Rachel, what you're saying about candida makes a lot of sense. I'm hoping that my celiac going undiagnosed for so long is what is causing my candida issues (if that is actually what it is) so that with diet and antifungals it will go away. If not, I will definitely...
  10. As only you all can understand this, I'm very excited: I just got off the phone with my naturopath, and he can get me in on Monday. Now, it's a two-hour drive, but I'm amazed I could get in this soon. It's sad when I get excited over a doctor's appointment that I'm going to have to shell out $200 for! But, if he has answers, I'm all for it. He...
  11. Hmmm....I use mostly plastic ware to eat on/with since we don't have a dishwasher, and I'm always washing dishes. I also use a lot of aluminum foil to cook on....maybe I should avoid these...very interesting. And, I did feel *awful* when I cut out sugar about two months ago. I made it a week before I was getting so sick and nauseous that I had to begin...
  12. Jenny, I wanted to add that, thanks to Carla's comments on another thread awhile back, I added coconut oil to my diet a month or so ago. I eat eggs for breakfast every morning, and I cook them in coconut oil. When I cook them in olive oil instead, my tummy is not as happy. I now use coconut oil for everything--in recipes that call for butter, for any...
  13. Just received your PM, Laura--thanks again. And I hear ya'--I've seen so many clunkers of doctors that if I like someone, I'll shout it from the rooftops!
  14. Oops, one more thing: Laura, my parents live in northern VA, so I'm up there fairly often. Do you see a doctor/doctor-type person who is helpful with any of your health issues? If you recommend anyone, I'd love to hear it.
  15. Thanks for everyone's thoughts on IBS--I feel the same way. There has to be a *reason* that my bowel is so, well, irritable. And, Rachel, it's very funny that you said that about the medications because when I was diagnosed with IBS years ago, I was given prescription meds and sent on my way. I was on those things for four years, twice a day, before celiac...
  16. Thanks for the welcome, Patti. This place *is* wonderful, and I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't found it when I was diagnosed. I learn so much more from you all than my doctor(s). And, Patti, that's what I'm afraid of, too--that's the tests for bacterial overgrowth is going to come back negative because all of my other tests have. It...
  17. Rinne--that's exactly it. It's very frustrating to try things to feel better and not seeing immediate relief and therefore getting discouraged. I get so upset sometimes because I feel like going gluten free, and then soy free, and then dairy free, is a big enough sacrifice, and I STILL don't feel better. I am feeling pretty bad today, and these bad days...
  18. I used to make an iced pumpkin cookie that I got off Nestle's website (verybestbaking.com) that was very good; I just converted it to gluten-free by using my baking mix. They have several pumpkin recipes up there (they make Libby's canned pumpkin, which is why they have several pumpkin recipes), so hopefully one of those you'll like and will convert to gluten...
  19. Rachel--Thank you for your response. I'm going to do more checking into Lyme disease and see what I can find out. I'll definitely make sure to mention it to my naturopath when I see him. Judy--Sorry that your doctor seems to be somewhat clueless. I've *definitely* encountered a lot of that over my years trying to get diagnosed. Jin--I've never heard...
  20. Thanks for the welcome! Wow, I had no idea diarrhea was a symptom of Lyme's. I'll definitely bring that up with the homeopath. It's encouraging, Donna, that your symptoms seem to be getting better; I hope they continue to improve. I have considered candida because I was diagnosed with that about five years ago when I had some bladder problems...
  21. Hi, everyone, I posted on a separate thread about seeing a naturopath/homeopath, and Andrea suggested I post here about my symptoms. Thanks for letting me jump in! I was diagnosed with celiac disease in November 2004 via bloodtest (all levels were extremely high--no question that I have celiac). Got much better and then started having diarrhea again...

    ARCHIVED Naturopath/homeopath

Thank you very much for your responses. It's very frustrating to still have problems, and I just don't know what it is now. I've eliminated soy and dairy, and nothing changed. Ugh. Maybe I'll pop by the "OMG" thread--I was always intrigued by it since I'm still having problems, but I didn't want to barge in to a thread if I was in the wrong place. ...

    ARCHIVED Naturopath/homeopath

I'm finally fed up with my ongoing symptoms (basically, the big "D") after nearly three years gluten-free. I've decided to see a naturopath who specializes in homeopathy. He seems wonderful, but it's expensive, as my insurance doesn't cover it. Does anyone have any thoughts on naturopathy/homeopathy, positive or negative? My GI has ruled out things...
  24. You can also buy the book of the author who "created" the diet. It's called Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall. It goes into a lot of detail about how/why the diet is supposed to work. The websites mentioned above are also good. I've often thought about trying the diet because I'm still having diarrhea nearly three years after diagnosis,...
  25. I'd really like to try taking a probiotic daily to see if it helps some of my lingering symptoms, as I'm pretty much convinced I have a problem with candida (as I did way before my celiac diagnosis). However, I need it to be gluten-free, soy free, and dairy free, and I found one that seems to be so: Kyo-dophilus. Has anyone taken this before? Any comments...
