ARCHIVED Sinus Pressure
jmengert replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have had a sinus infection without discharge before, but another option is allergies. I get sinus headaches almost daily if I don't take an antihistamine. If you have allergies at all, this is one option of what may be causing your problems. I hope you can find some relief; I hate having sinus headaches. -
According to their website, all Vicks products are gluten-free (this includes Dayquil and Nyquil). I use the Dayquil Sinus pills with no problem. I hope you feel better soon!

ARCHIVED Tanning Lotions
jmengert replied to SunnyDyRain's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
A year ago I confirmed that Sheer Wisdom's hypoallergenic brand of tanning lotion was gluten-free. I still have the same bottle, but I'm assuming it will still be gluten-free--if you can find it, just read the ingredients carefully to make sure it still is. -
ARCHIVED Vulvodynia And Celiac Disease
jmengert replied to pellegrino's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have vulvodynia, too, actually a type that is called vestibulitis. I was diagnosed with that before I was diagnosed with celiac disease. Unfortunately, I haven't noticed much symptom relief since going gluten-free, which I had hoped would be the case. I've always wondered if there is a connection with these two diseases, and because they are both auto... -
ARCHIVED Chap Stick
jmengert replied to Calikat4's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use Badger Balm products, which are gluten-free. I love their lip balm; in fact, it's the best I've ever used. I order it from Drugstore.com or get it at some local health food stores (but often can't find it there). Some Whole Foods carry their products, too. -
ARCHIVED Nars
jmengert replied to LLatham's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
All of my makeup is from them, and I love their stuff. It's pricey, but it lasts a long time, so that helps a bit. -
Thank you, everyone, for your kind words. I was in my office at the time; I don't know how I would have handled it if I were teaching. I just feel so horrible for the students. I can't imagine what those who witnessed everything went through. And, I especially can't imagine what the families of those hurt or killed are feeling. How horrible. It's very...

I'm a professor at Virginia Tech, and it's just horrible. We were on lockdown and were evacuated after noon. My prayers go out to the students and their families; the feeling here is just awful right now. It's indescribable.

ARCHIVED In So Much Pain Right Now
jmengert replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I used to have horrible fissures about 7 years ago, back when I used to get constipated all the time. I used Anusol, which helped with the pain and helped heal (somewhat)--unfortunately, the only thing that helps heal them is time. I also increased my fiber to help me "go" more to avoid the constipation. You could also try taking a stool softener until... -
ARCHIVED Best Cake Mixes
jmengert replied to delawaregirl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
My favorite cake mix is Cause You're Special's lemon cake mix. I've made it for several non-gluten-free people, and they all like it, too. I've never actually found a chocolate or yellow cake mix that I *really* like; I've found most of them to be rather dry. I therefore don't do too many cakes....however, if you like carrot cake, Pamela's mix also makes... -

ARCHIVED French's Mustard - Gluten Free?
jmengert replied to moonchild's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
French's regular mustard is gluten-free; I use it all the time. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Moisturizer?
jmengert replied to Izak's Mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Dove moisturizers are almost all gluten-free. They clearly label for wheat, oats, barley, and rye, and I use both their body lotions (all of which are gluten-free, that I've read) and their facial lotion (I've only seen one of those with oats, and I believe it's a sensitive skin variety). I have *very* dry skin, and their stuff does the trick. I hope... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Attend A Wedding Dinner?
jmengert replied to Gentleheart's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've attended two formal weddings since being diagnosed. For the first one, I spoke with my friend (who was going to try and get food for me, but I told her not to worry about it), and I just brought my own food and ate with everyone else when dinner was served. No one at my table thought it was odd, and in fact, one person was a chef at the table and knew... -
ARCHIVED Take This Mind Test - It Is Freaky!
jmengert replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Immediately thought of a red hammer--I wonder what the "science" is behind this? Very, very odd, but very cool! -
ARCHIVED Dizzy After Meal
jmengert replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I went for years undiagnosed, so when I finally was, it took me a very long time to heal (and I'm still not fully there, as now other problems have crept up). I was definitely completely gluten-free, but I would get very dizzy for about a month or so about two months into the gluten-free diet. I also had nausea for a good month or so around that time, too... -
Thanks for the replies. I had to eat some carbs yesterday (but just had some corn) because I was feeling awful. I've also lost 5 pounds after only doing this for a week, and I don't need to be losing any weight. I've done some research on the Threelac, and I think I may buy that--it seems to have helped a lot of people. Thanks again!

For those who have done or are doing the candida diet, did you have any digestive problems at first? I have very bad diarrhea and nausea since I cut out sugars and carbs--is this normal? Is this the candida beginning to die out? I feel awful and feel like giving up, so does anyone have any experience with this? I'd love to hear it!

ARCHIVED Looking For Good gluten-free Cosmetics
jmengert replied to georgiagirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I use all NARS products; they are all gluten-free, which I've verified from them several times over the past year. However, they are a bit pricey, just an FYI, but it is very good quality makeup. I have problem skin, so I consider it worth the extra money. I order their products from Sephora online, or I get them at the Sephora stores, when I'm near one... -
ARCHIVED Soy And Milk Allergy?
jmengert replied to dally099's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Annie's makes salad dressings that are soy free (not all are, but most are--also, not all are gluten-free, but again most are). Before I began making my own dressing, I used Annie's dressings all the time--I got them from Whole Foods, Kroger, and health food stores. -
I use Hellman's canola mayo, which is soy, dairy, and gluten-free. I like it a lot! It does contain vinegar and eggs, but hopefully these ingredients don't both you.

ARCHIVED Soy And Milk Allergy?
jmengert replied to dally099's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm currently dairy and soy free, too, so I use Whole Food's 365 brand of vanilla rice milk, but I really only use it for baking and cooking, as I don't eat gluten-free cereals or drink it straight. I also use either coconut oil or palm oil shortening (both by Spectrum organics) in place of butter in my cooking, and they both work really well. I miss butter... -
I, too, think I'm having a problem with candida; for those of you who have cut down/out sugars, for how long do you do this? I can't imagine just eating meat and veggies for too long!
-
I believe the Rice Dream milk (but not their ice cream) has barley in it, but I could be wrong. I do avoid that brand, though, as I've heard it contains barley, but I haven't seen this myself. Hopefully someone else can chime in here to confirm.

I've been gluten-free for about 2.5 years and am still having problems. I have the big D every day, sometimes several times a day, and I've cut out soy and dairy and nothing is helping. My blood levels have gone back to normal, and I just had a endoscopy a few months ago that showed that things have healed. So, why do I still have these problems? I...
