ARCHIVED This Is Getting Ridiculous!
GlutenFreeManna replied to bartfull's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would be more suspicious of the micropone and anything else you put your mouth close to or touched that other musicians were using. Was it a bar? I can't be in a bar where there's lots of beer being consumed or a restaurant where there's lots of baking. I don't know if it the airborne gluten or just all the people eating gluten stuff with their hands... -
ARCHIVED The Day After I Graduate Culinary School I Have To Go Gluten Free :(
GlutenFreeManna replied to Applegirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with the above advice--start your own gluten-free business. Or if you feel like you are not ready for that big step you could check into working at a 100% gluten-free restaurant: Of course these places all probably have head chefs already but you have to start somewhere (I don't know how it works but I imagine you don't just start out as a... -
I don't know where Adelaide is but PF Changs is a national chain that has a gluten-free menu. I use glutenfreeregistry.com for finding restaurants.

ARCHIVED If I Cheat On My Gluten Free Diet, Could I Be More Likely To Get Type 1 Diabetes?
GlutenFreeManna replied to alicewa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm So glad for you! I bet no one will even know it's gluten-free unless you tell them! -
I'll be hiding inside with all the lights out, hoping no one rings our bell. I don't celebrate halloween, but I do celebrate fall and have some autumn colored decorations as well as all the yummy produce that is in season--pumpkins and other winter squash, apples, pomegrantes etc.

ARCHIVED Eating Gluten For Labs
GlutenFreeManna replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Show them this link about testing from the celiac center in Chicago: Open Original Shared Link The first few sentences on the second page say: "Antibody tests are only accurate when a patient is on a gluten-containing diet. Those concerned about celiac disease are strongly discouraged from starting a gluten-free diet without having had a firm diagnosis... -
ARCHIVED Strict Elimination Diet
GlutenFreeManna replied to New Community Member's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Some dieticians are worthless (will only tell you what you already know) and some can help guide you through an elimination diet or additional food intolerance/allergy testing. If your insurance covers it then I would go to one just to see if you can learn anything. If your insurance does not cover it I would not bother. -
ARCHIVED Eating Gluten For Labs
GlutenFreeManna replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you are desperate for some positive tests you might look into Enterolab. Supposedly you can test with them with less gluten in your system because they test via a stool sample test. However, they are NOT covered by insurance (at least i have never heard of an insurance covering them) and technically they do not diagnose celiac disease. They will only... -
ARCHIVED Is Dr. Pepper Gluten Free?
GlutenFreeManna replied to Mabc's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Caramel color in the US and Canada is not a concern. It is made from corn. Dr Pepper is gluten-free. I'm super sensitive and it's my first choice for an indulgence when I want a cola. I usually have the Heritage stuff but haven't been able to find it lately so I've been drinking the regular now and then without any problems. Enjoy! -
Ditto what Roda said. You would have to go back to eating gluten for an offical diagnosis (and even then it could be false negative). It's too bad your dr didn't test you before telling you to try the gluten-free diet. If your kids are not gluten-free, I would take them to the dr and ask for testing based on your symptoms recovery with a gluten-free diet...

ARCHIVED Eating Gluten For Labs
GlutenFreeManna replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you have been gluten-free for a while then NO. The bare minimum is 6 weeks, but the more common recomendations I have seen is 3 months. That's eating the equivalent of 3 to 4 slices of bread a day for 3 months. If you can only get so far in without feeling miserable then you already have your answer that you need to be gluten-free. Why put yourself... -
ARCHIVED If I Cheat On My Gluten Free Diet, Could I Be More Likely To Get Type 1 Diabetes?
GlutenFreeManna replied to alicewa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What we have been trying to explain is many people's reactions get WORSE the longer they are gluten-free. I really hope this is not the case for you if you cheat on your wedding day. I don't condone cheating but if you are determined to have regular cake on your wedding day perhaps your should cheat a week or two earlier than that once with a piece of cake... -
ARCHIVED My Mom Has Both Celiac Hladq Genes
GlutenFreeManna replied to alicewa's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The statistics say that immediate relatives of those with celiac (parents, children, or siblings) have a 1 in 22 chance of have celiac themselves. I don't know how this translates now that you know her genes but since you are diagnosed celiac your mom has AT LEAST a 1 in 22 chance of having it herself. She should get herself tested (for the antibodies)... -
ARCHIVED Buffet
GlutenFreeManna replied to Duhlina's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I stay away from buffets. But if you were to go the salad bar part would probably be the least safe area. The croutons are usually near the dressing and you can never tell if some one dropped a crouton in the bottom of the dressing or used the same tongs for the croutons as for the lettuce. I've heard some (less sensitive) people go to them and always... -

GlutenFreeManna replied to Kate79's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well I'm personally offended not only for the people that have celiac/gluten intolerance but also for the people with eating disorders such as anerexia and bulimia. I wasn't going to write and complain, but your insistence that this is no big deal just caused me to write a complaint to CBS. Thanks for the motivation! -
ARCHIVED Wheat Flour Sourdough Starter Safe?
GlutenFreeManna replied to alicewa's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have not tried it but this recipe looks amazing: Open Original Shared Link If you read the link on how she makes her starter she actually used red cabbbage to get the fermentation part of the starter. Brilliant! I never would have thought to do that. -
ARCHIVED My Son's Gluten Trial Is Making Me So Sick
GlutenFreeManna replied to julandjo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If the tests are negative you won't know why for sure (is it a false negative or he really doesn't have it or his celiac hasn't been triggered yet). But that would be the SAME even if you had no restrictions and could gluten him up really well for 3 months. Since you do have celaic, no matter how you were to do his trial you would want to keep retesting... -
ARCHIVED My Son's Gluten Trial Is Making Me So Sick
GlutenFreeManna replied to julandjo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you plan to go back to that way of eating at home regardless of the test results then I would just postpone testing for longer and not feed him gluten at home, but allow him to have it at school and friend's houses for the next 6 months. The standard they always say for adults is to gluten up good for around 3 months but I would think that you could also... -
ARCHIVED My Son's Gluten Trial Is Making Me So Sick
GlutenFreeManna replied to julandjo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Why not get some eqivalent gluten-free snacks that your 3 yr old can have and make them both sit at opposite sides of the table for snack time? Having the 5 year old in his room eating gluten is bound to be less safe for you and your 3 year old since he will have gluten all over things you have to touch and clean later. He may also be confused by the whole... -
ARCHIVED I Really, Really Need Help, So Confused. :(
GlutenFreeManna replied to confusedgirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
No need to be confused. Listen to what your body is telling you and stay gluten-free! Your dr was wise to recognise all the things related to celiac that cleared up due to your gluten-free diet. It's too bad that she wanted you to re-poison yourself for testing. Many of us are in the same position and won't ever get an "official" diagnosis via positive... -
ARCHIVED Wheat Flour Sourdough Starter Safe?
GlutenFreeManna replied to alicewa's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
IMO, there is just not enough research on this to know the long term effects of eating wheat-based sourdough breads. You can use the same methods you used before for making a sourdough starter out of gluten-free flour. There is no need to use wheat flour and no reason to risk it. -
ARCHIVED If I Cheat On My Gluten Free Diet, Could I Be More Likely To Get Type 1 Diabetes?
GlutenFreeManna replied to alicewa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Your dr probably told you this as a way to give you will power to avoid gluten. Most of us think of it as poison or think of the terrible diseases that other undiganosed family members suffered. Eating one piece of cake will probably not cause type 1 diabetes but cheating on your wedding day could make you sick enough you won't enjoy the honeymoon. Even...
