ARCHIVED Best Bread Brand?
GlutenFreeManna replied to WinterSong's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It's better if you wait several months to eat any kind of gluten-free bread. That way you eventually "forget" what real bread tastes like. And as SA said above me you need to toast most gluten-free bread or at least heat it up in the microwave for about 30 seconds for it to be soft and not as dry. -
This menu sounds much better. Can you do hummus? I love to dip veggies in hummus. You could dip some rice crackers or corn chips in it too for a yummy snack. There are so many variation on it too if you like hummus--roasted red pepper, garlic, etc.

ARCHIVED Hunts Ketchup And Vlassic Pickles
GlutenFreeManna replied to dube's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I eat both of those brands all the time and I'm very sensitive to gluten. How was your burger cooked? Did you cook it on grill or in a pan that was used for gluten-containing foods in the past? Did other people in your household eat regular gluten buns on their burgers? If you shared any of the condiments or even just opened up their buns for them and... -
Sorry you had that happen girl! I've been there done that myself (just not while pregnant). That's not much protein. That's a lot of carbs and sugar. I would have trouble eating that too and I'm not pregnant just a little hypoglycemic. Try natural peanut butter on toast instead of jam. Eat some eggs if you can. I cannot eat eggs alone (I just don...

Bunless turkey burgers with lettuce wedges in place of the buns to hold all the toppings, homemade baked steak fries and fruit salad (cherries, pineapple, pears, mandarin orange and banana slices) for dessert. I feel like it's summer already! -
ARCHIVED Why Can't She Have It In Moderation?
GlutenFreeManna replied to JustForJen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am sorry to hear this! I want to encourage you however to not give up on your marriage if you really still love your wife. Give her time to come around if possible. I must tell you a personal story because this scenario well could have happened in my own marriage all due to celiac. When I was still very sick and undiagnosed my husband lost his job.... -
What ARE you eating? Maybe we can help you figure out if there's some hidden gluten sneaking in. Other possible culprits are vitamin deficincies or additional food intolerances. Dairy and Soy are the most common ones it seems. Lactose intolerance could cause the bloating and pain. Are you eating a lot of cheese or dairy items? Another food intolerance...

ARCHIVED Substituting Bad Foods For Good Foods
GlutenFreeManna replied to yogismith's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Have you tried any gluten free pasta or bread at all? Not all brands are great but some are really good. We eat Tinkyada pasta and Udi's or Rudi's bread. Obviously if you want to lose weight you can't eat gluten-free substitutes everyday, but if you eat a diet of mostly lean meats and vegetables you can have a carby meal every once and a while without... -

ARCHIVED Post Pebbles Treats
GlutenFreeManna replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks Dixiebell! So it looks like they do have milk and soy. Darn. Oh well, I'm glad to hear that your son like them. My niece will love these. I know she like the packaged Rice Krispie treats but those are not gluten free. It's not fun to clean up a sticky messy child after she eats something with gluten. Nice to have these as an option. -
I had really bad seasonal allergies and also got a lot of sinus infections prior to going gluten free. So far this spring I have have very mild symptoms. So mild I wake up in the morning, blow my nose twice and that's about all the congestion I have for the rest of the day (we have been keeping the windows open most nights because it has been in the 70s...

ARCHIVED Post Pebbles Treats
GlutenFreeManna posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was just looking through my coupons and I saw an ad for Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles Treats. It said "gluten free and 90 calories" in the ad. There is also a .75/1 coupon for these and I can get them for just .39 at my local store. SO has anyone tried them yet? I'm guessing they have a bunch of stuff I can't have like soy or dairy. Anyone have... -
Also meant to answer your second question. As far as I know there is not enough research showing that 20 ppm is safe in the long term diet. The reason for 20 ppm standard in other countries is that it was the most sensitve test they had at the time. The testing is very expensive for companies to do from what I hear. Something tested at 20 ppm could have...

In the US, yes it's "possible" but not likely to be happening frequently. Plus even if there were regulations for the use of the words "gluten free" on food that would not cover vitamins and non-food items (mouthwash for example). We see posts on here all the time from people that got sick from vitamins that said they were "gluten free" but contained wheat...

ARCHIVED New And Confused
GlutenFreeManna replied to sbloom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The first doctor you saw ought to have his medical license revoked! That's awful that he told you that. That's like saying to someone with an operable tumor, don't worry about the cancer until it has metastcized to your entire body and you are nearly dead! As long as you are eating gltuen your body is making antibodies. The gluten can attack any of your... -

ARCHIVED Desperate For Some Gluten-Free Onion Rings!

Let us know how it turns out! I have done something similar to make oven fried chicken gluten free and it was great--couldn't even tell it was gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Whatcha Eating Today Celiacs?
GlutenFreeManna replied to catsmeow's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Well today was not the healthiest example for me: Breakfast: 1 banana Lunch: a bowl of popcorn made on the stove top with olive oil and salted with sea salt. A Heritage "real sugar" dr pepper Dinner: One baked chicken breast coated with mayo, Nature's path cornflakes and cajun seasoning about 1/2 cup of steamed peas about 3/4 cup of... -
There are no laws requiring companies to disclose shared lines (at least in the US). When they do so it is done voluntarily. Even if they had certified gluten free oil it could still contain enough cc to make some celiacs sick. Most certified products are tested to have 20 ppm or less in them. The most sensitive test available is 5 ppm. So a product...

I am leary of organic anything that is not fresh meat, whole fruit or whole vegetables. Most organic prepackaged food companies process organic whole wheat products too because people who eat organic are concerned about their health and the "healthy" guidelines for non-celaics involves eating lots of wheat. As far as the spices--all single ingredient...

ARCHIVED Celiac Or Gluten Sensitivity?
GlutenFreeManna replied to anna34's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, you will want to re-test your son. I have read the false negative rate is about 20% (meaning 20% of celiacs test negative even when on a full gltuen diet). This rate increases in small children--they are more likely to have a false negative. If you plan to retest him then you want to keep him on gluten. If he is gluten light (only eating gluten when... -

ARCHIVED Desperate For Some Gluten-Free Onion Rings!
GlutenFreeManna replied to Jenn624's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Without cooking it's going to be difficult to get gluten-free onion rings. I'm sure they exist somewhere but they will be pricey and hard to find. You could eat some Funyuns to see if that helps with your craving. Last I read they were gltuen free, but do double check that as ingredient can change. -
ARCHIVED What Advice Should I Give My Husband?
GlutenFreeManna replied to Lunabell's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It's totally up to him. If he is committed to staying strictly gluten free without a dr diagnosis then he can do whatever he wants and doesn't need a drs permission. However, if he feels like he can be gluten free and cheat every once in a while he should probably go back on gluten and get tested. For me personally the effects of the gltuen free diet are... -
ARCHIVED Mouthwash Has Gluten In It
GlutenFreeManna replied to iamsarar's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Reading this I almost wonder if the people you spoke to had gluten confused with glucose. I would have asked instead if it had any wheat, barley, rye, oats or malt derived ingredients. Anyway, there's no doubt it could be bothering you and I would switch too if I were you. I use Listerine daily and have not had any problems with it. To degluten your mouthpiece...
