  1. This describes me as well! This is so interesting to me. I tried to be vegetarian for many years and I felt miserable even though I was eating "healthier" according to some. I had to add red meat back into my diet slowly but once I did I started to realize that I felt better when I had meat at least once a week. So I'm no longer a vegetarian. I respect...
  2. It sounds like you may have a problem with intestinal yeast. I originally suspected my problem could be yeast when I did my elimination diet and I eliminated all grains, sugars and carby vegetables as well. I was quite surprised when after a month I could add in potatoes and corn without symptoms, but wheat and dairy gave my bad reactions. Then I did more...
  3. Why not just ask for the Celiac panel blood test? Or if you think the doctor won't do a celiac test you can take her to the dermatologist and have her tested for DH. If her "eczema" is really DH then she has celiac.
  4. Congratulations--You've been diagnosed! You have a positive blood test and a positive reaction to the diet and a noticeable reaction when challenged with gluten. That should be enough to diagnose and it's more than many on this board have. Your doctor was right to tell you that you need to be on gluten in order to have an accurate biopsy, however they...
  5. When you do eat, what are you eating? Gluten free replacement foods fill me up faster and I eat less when I have them. I also get more C when I eat gluten free breads and things like that and I can go days without feeling really hungry. When I eat healthy though (veggies, fruit and meat mostly with some potatoes and rice) I'm hungry every few hours and...
  6. Yes, please fight to get this taken off your record. I was in grad school when my health started to decline. I told my advisor about my health issues (which were not yet diagnosed) and asked for some accommodation for doctors appointments and to do my research during the time of day when I was at my best (early morning I had less brain fog) etc. In my...
  7. 1. Anywhere from 20 minutes to two days later. It seems to vary for me. 2. If my body "catches" it with 20-30 minutes I get a headache, nausea and sometimes throw up. Then for the next 4-5 days I have bad neurological reactions-- muscle and joint pain, shaking hands, fatigue, brain fog, etc. If my body doesn't react right away and the reaction is...
  8. You're making perfect sense to me. The Budget amounts I posted above are for everything as well (paper goods, cleaning, etc.) No way I could do as well gluten free and I do eat mostly whole natural gluten free foods (Potatoes, rice, meat, fruit, etc.) instead of gluten-free replacements. I got a BJ's Warehouse membership to save money on meats and a few...
  9. I have tried it once and it was yummy. They prepare the gluten free pizzas in a separate room from the regular pizzas that has it's own station with toppings that are only used on the gluten free pizzas, so there's no cross-contamination possibility from the toppings. I know because I asked about getting cheddar cheese instead of mozzarella and I was told...
  10. Really? I thought Spelt was just another (older) form of wheat. I thought I saw someone with a wheat allergy post here that they reacted to spelt, so I guess that's where I got confused. Thanks for the info.
  11. I thought of another one today: Cheatiac --A Celiac that cheats on the gluten free diet.
  12. I saw a sign today advertising for a homemade specialty bread store. I scanned the list of what they make to see if they had any gluten free bread. No such luck, but the last product they listed was "Spelt bread for people with Wheat allergies"
  13. I think pre-existing conditions have to be diagnosed. If you are afraid you won't be able to get individual insurance, I wouldn't worry about that. As someone else said, most companies deny you coverage for history of major illnesses like cancer. And in some places it's illegal for them to deny you even for that. Your premiums may be higher because of...
  14. I agree with everyone else about the Quinoa. I had a bad reaction to Quinoa, almost worse than gluten. Kale is a another suspect food to me just because it's one of the dirty dozen--unless you are buying organic kale it's grown with a high number of pesticides that are difficult to wash off. And if fish is your only option for meat, maybe you need to go...
  15. I think living in a moldy house may have triggered my celiac to start producing really bad symptoms. Perhaps it weakened my immune system enough? All I know is I started getting really sick in that house and we found black mold growing behind the fridge when we moved out. I think I had signs and symptoms that were mild my whole life though. I don't think...
  16. I can totally sympathize with you as I am a coupon lady too. My grocery budget used to be $100 per month for just my husband and me. Now I spend $300 per month and I don't even buy very many of the gluten free mixes. I cook from scratch and I stockpile when gluten free foods are cheap with a sale and coupon. I can't imagine how much it would go up to...
  17. I can't help with a noodle recipe, but here's a ravioli recipe to get you started: Open Original Shared Link
  18. Hi, it sounds like he may have it. Keep him on gluten until you meet with the GI and all testing is done. BTW, if you are in the US, you have a legal right to get copy of the test results. Get the results and read them for yourself. Few doctors are very educated about celiac, so that may be why they hemmed and hawed and wouldn't give you a straight answer...
  19. Wow! Sounds like they outright LIED to you! I did a search and found this thread from 2007: Apparently they used to have a gluten free menu (before 2007) and pulled it. That alone speaks volumes about this place. And I don't know if you are new to the gluten-free lifestyle, but for future reference when a place doesn't have a gluten free menu there...
  20. I have had swollen hands and numbness in my hands, but never anything exactly like you describe. I didn't know the Hard Rock Cafes had a Gluten Free menu. Sounds like you can't trust them. I hope you feel better soon!
  21. You're right. "Glumpanies" is fun to say. We can even create a tongue-twister: Those darn Glumpanies and their glutenopolies making it impossible to eat in the Glutenopolis!
  22. My last post just made me think of another one: Glutenopolis: (Gluten+ Metropolis) A metro area with lots of gluten restaurants and very few safe places to eat. Not to be confused with GlutenopoliEs.
  23. Glad to be a source of amusement. I sort my coupons now into glupons and Non-glupons and take the Glupons to my gluponing friends and they give me their non-glupons to use; So they don't go to waste and we both win. It is frustrating looking at my normal coupon boards and blogs though and see lots of people are all excited about a Glupon sale. This week...
  24. It takes me almost a week to get over a glutening. I think the shortest has been 4 days. I think it will take a while to learn what is "safe" when trying new foods. Stick with food you know you don't react to until you get over the glutening. Don't try anything new while you still feel bad. Sorry your still suffering.
  25. My thoughts exactly. It's probably fine. Ask a friend to open it outside if you are concerned. The book may be wrapped in something else like plastic or paper inside the box, in which case it didn't even touch the box. The box probably never came into contact with much of the cereal anyway.
