  1. I've been recently diagnosed with Celiac disease (through blood tests and a stomach biopsy). So natually my parents decided to get their blood tested. But both of them came out negative. Is this unusual? How common is it for the parents of a Celiac to have it as well? My mom was beginning to think that I was misdiagnosed but I did some research and apparently...
  2. I get frustrated with others (mainly aquaintences, but also some friends) who don't seem to get it, either. I just get irritated when they just seem to think "so you have some food allergies. Big deal." I try not to waste my time explaining to these people anyway, as it would just burn me up. However, I am trying to educate as many people as possible about...
  3. My mom is the only one who is currently on the gluten-free diet, although she was not diagnosed with Celiac like I was. My dad has remained on his regular diet, as has everyone else in my family.
  4. I'm sorry to hear that, Scott, and I hope you feel better soon. I found out I had Celiac 3 days before my 32nd birthday, early this May. It came as a real shock because I don't have the typical GI/stomach issues. However, I do have acid reflux and lost a fair amount of weight in the last year. Anyway, welcome to the group!
  5. I have also struggled with back pain, particularly in the last few years. Like most of the posters in this thread, I did not have the classic stomach and GI symptoms that so many Celiacs tend to have. But I am not a silent Celiac either. My main issues have been: fatigue, insomnia, restless legs/cramping, back pain, sinus aches and other "allergy" like symptoms...
  6. Did you ever suffer from GI symptoms before you were diagnosed? I assume that if you don't have GI problems to begin with, then it will be harder to tell if you are glutened?
  7. I'm wondering about that myself. I do not have any GI symptoms except for acid reflux and some weight loss. I've been on the gluten-free diet for 6 weeks now (with little improvement, unfortunately) but I cannot tell when I've been "glutened." Are there any telltale symptoms if we are "glutened" for those of us who have Celiac without the classic GI symptoms...
  8. there seem to be less nights I have RL syndrome, although I notice if I do a a lot of spinning (I spin yarn, esp. at night) I'm more apt to get the RL. Mine don't bother me until early in the morning. I'm no a pretty high dose of Mirapex and Gabiprintin (Neurontin) and also take 1 Clonazapam per evening. Sorry about the bad spelling.
  9. Wow, that is interesting (the article). I figured there was some connection between vulvodynia and Celiac. I also really think there must be a link between celiac disease and chronic vaginal yeast infections/candida.
  10. I'm so sorry to hear all of this, Vicky. I would say good riddance to him; his loss. You deserve someone better who will take your problem seriously and be honest. I'm not having as many problems as you are at the moment, but I have had so much bad luck with relationships and haven't gone on a date for over 1 1/2 years. It's hard because I'm 32 and 2 of...
  11. I also had a rough first couple of weeks with this diet. I was extremely tired and was an emotional roller coaster. Since fatigue is one of my major symptoms, I noticed it got worse when I started this diet. Now I'm back to about the same level of fatigue that I had before, although my parents said that I seem to be more alert and brighter. Fatigue, restless...
  12. I'm not a picky eater, but I've found this to be a very challenging diet to say the least. One major reason is that I can't eat foods with a high oxalic acid content (such as berries, greens, spinach, beets, very spicy foods, soy products, peanuts, pecans, etc etc) without having to pay for it later. Since very few of the foods high in oxalic acid overlap...
  13. I have almost finished Shauna "Gluten free Girl" book. It's really been a pleasure to read something about Celiac that is also uplifting and enlightening. I made her chocolate banana bread w/ teff flour from her blog the other day, it turned out awesome!
  14. Oh, sorry to hear that. My periods are heavy, but not nearly as heavy as yours. However, I get really bad cramps. I've had 2 laporoscophies (sp?) to check for endo, none found either time.
  15. I just got a bunch of blood tests done for other food allergies, too. As well as for pollen, mold, etc. I've been on the gluten-free diet for about 6 weeks, but haven't gotten much relief. I should find out the results for these other tests while I'm in Iceland. I hope I don't have other food allergies as well!
  16. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm just looking for gluten-free lipstick, as I don't wear other makeup. I'm assuming Burts Bees lipgloss is ok, but then there's another thread that says that BB is not a gluten-free company and that they didn't give direct answers when they were questioned about the use of gluten in their products. Does anyone else know if BB...
  17. Tell me about it! I've been suffering from chronic yeast infections (the female kind) since I was 13 years old. There have been times that I've had yeast infections for months that just wouldn't go away, no matter how many yeast creams I used. Now I get one every few months or so. I don't know if the amount of sugar in my diet affects them (I am a real sweet...
  18. So it sounds like not everyone just feels loads better in a matter of days or weeks. That is reassuring, but unfortunate. The other day I saw a dietician and explained the issue. She told me that she didn't understand why I wasn't feeling better after being on the gluten-free diet for 5 plus weeks. She said most Celiacs notice almost immediate improvement...
  19. You are probably experiencing withdrawl symptoms. I also had lots of headaches the first few weeks of the gluten-free diet, as well as crying spells, anger and all kinds of emotions. The gluten-free diet is like quitting smoking or drugs cold turkey. Essentially, it's not much difference. If you're used to eating glutenous foods all your life and suddenly...
  20. I've heard that Revlon gives vague info when asked if their products are gluten-free. So that makes me a bit suspicious. Does anyone know of any safe gluten-free lipstick? I would hate to think that the lipstick I wear is prolonging my problems...
  21. The first few weeks were the hardest for me, too. I had all kinds of mood swings, crying spells, etc. I also had headaches. I assume that they are all withdrawl symptoms. I'm still having some trouble with my moods, but much less than I used to. However, I still feel fatigued as well as most of the other symptoms. My weight has remained the same. I'm on the...
  22. does anyone know if Revlon lipstick is gluten-free? It's the only lipstick that I use and I haven't felt better despite being on the gluten-free diet for over 5 weeks. I wonder if it could be something as simple as this that is causing me to not feel better?
  23. Wow, after skimming various articles on the problems with agave syrup, I don't know if I even want to keep the bottles I have! I noticed that it's used as the sole sweetener in Elana's almond flour cookbook. I will certainly use less than she calls for, and for that matter, just substitute it with a different sweetener. I thought it tasted too unnaturally...
  24. I'm planning on getting my blood checked for dairy, soy and egg allergies next. That is interesting to know that the stomach/ gi problems are the first to improve. Since I've never had many stomach problems (other than acid reflux, which I believe will not go away with the gluten-free diet), maybe that is why I'm not noticing an improvement yet. For those...
