  1. My word Jenny, we were suffering at the same time, on different sides of the world! I also started going very downhill December 2009 - also started fevers/chills, nausea, d, emergency room trip etc etc. Going gluten-free cleared it all up, I really hope it's the same for you! Once you've done the testing, even if results are negative, definitely try...
  2. Oh dear, so sorry to hear that It's extremely frustrating when you try so hard to be gluten free, and then some twit in a fast food joint messes up your order There isn't much you can do, but I'd recommend eating "easy" foods for the next few days to give your GI system a break while it heals. Like eat well cooked foods, no raw veggies, go easy on the...
  3. Doctors nowadays... Seriously, when your son was diagnosed, they should have immediately sent you for blood tests (If they didn't they are morons, since it's hereditary....). If you have any other children, there's a chance they also will develop full-blown celiac disease or just good old gluten-intolerance. Even if the tests come back negative, with...
  4. Are you taking a 28 day contraceptive pill that has 4 inactive white tablets, and are you in that period now? Because you need to make sure they don't make those inactive pills using wheat starch Best to phone the company and double check. Otherwise don't lose hope - lots of people find they become *more* sensitive to gluten as they continue with...
  5. Unfortunately yes, some of us are that sensitive. Anything with "traces of gluten" makes me just as ill as the "real thing". I took a flavoured version of maize/corn porridge a few weeks ago when the non-flavoured was out of stock, not checking the label, and found out only after eating a bowl that it had "traces of gluten". I checked after the unexpected...
  6. Was just thinking this myself - how much of my intolerance to soya could be linked to CC with gluten. I mean if they can find up to 2000ppm of gluten in soy flour, how many ppm of gluten may be in processed soy products made with that flour or derived from the same source? My reaction to soya does seem different though, and it's similar to oats, in...
  7. Thank you for making me laugh I always wonder about that as well....
  8. So after a few weeks of trying to figure out *why* the cappuccinos at work are somehow affecting me, I did some experimenting today to see. I know the hot chocolate from the same machine contains wheat proteins, but stupid me, I assumed that someone who designed the machine would have a brain and make the hot chocolate come from a different spout ...
  9. Thanks for the suggestions! Inviting them over is a great idea, it's just that our place is *tiny* But I can squeeze us in at a push.
  10. This is my situation - we're invited at least once every 2 weeks or so to eat at my mom-in-laws or at my mom's house. Or I go visit my mom and she insists on giving us some left-overs for supper. They're trying really hard to not use anything containing gluten and asking lots of questions, and I'm also careful to double check spices and ask questions about...
  11. There are some very simple pizza bases with just corn flour, salt, oil and a flour mix. You can leave out the beer and extras, and it might be more digestable for him. Get a flour mix that already contains Xantham gum, from a certified gluten-free specialising company. Then you can be sure they've done their best not to have any cc.
  12. I get some mild itchy spots like this - more like itchy pimples with a white head than a welt. It can start as a water-blistery like welt before it shrinks to the "pimple" type. It's always surrounded by a ring of red skin. And always very itchy It happens between 5 hours to a day after accidentally eating gluten - and worse the more I've eaten....
  13. This is a bit of a controversial area - many people believe that Autism can be greatly improved on a gluten-free, casein-free diet (Gluten-free Casein-free). If your children with Autism/ADHD don't feel better gluten-free, or they initially improve and then go back again, try casein free as well. It's a strict diet, but if their lives improve it will really...
  14. Gah, what is with people resurrecting old threads??? The OP will probably not be around to see your insightful comment, just keep it to yourself
  15. If it's only happening during school periods, then it could definitely be psychological or just plain inconvenient. I don't think I particularly enjoyed going to the loo at school. The set periods also meant you couldn't just go when you got the urge, you had to wait for a break or something - by that time it's passed and nothing you can do will trigger...
  16. I would make a list of what you're eating during the week, compared with what you eat on Friday/Sat/Sunday. Maybe it's something different you eat causing problems during the week? If your diet is identical then I have no idea Include medications/supplements/fiber in that list. Keep in mind that for some people, fiber causes constipation! I'm assuming...
  17. Sounds like food poisoning to me - did you have nausea as well? A glutening will send me to the loo several times, but not keeping at it until stomach contents come out the other side! Bad food can take a while to actually cause symptoms, up to a day or two later for certain bacterial contamination. The 2 or 3 times I've had food poisoning, it was...

    ARCHIVED Ack Soy :(

Had some gluten-free bread a few days ago, and now I'm paying for it... Only remembered now that soy flour is a "bit" of a problem for me, and I vaguely remember it containing soy. Why oh why do I react even worse to soy than I do to gluten? And don't get me started on oats, I had a whole night episode a few days after oats. After gluten challenges a...
  19. Hello and welcome I'm yet another gluten intolerant that had negative bloodwork and biopsy, but all GI symptoms cleared up after going gluten free. Gluten can definately cause pain (celiac disease definately associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis for one thing). I for one get random carpal tunnel/painful knees/severe pain in small foot bones etc...
  20. Thanks for passing along the info I appreciate the links to the articles describing the association between DH And gluten, which seems to be mostly what they're talking about. However I agree with some of the others - there doesn't seem to be much info here to suggest gluten can cross the skin barrier. Most likely, reactions that do occur, are allergic...
  21. Thanks Jestgar, the dentist did recommend a "kids" fluoride rinse to use daily - to strengthen teeth without going overkill with adult mouthwash that kills every single living bacteria in your mouth (good and bad ). Thanks Cass - yes I'm not too fond of that idea either. A rinse is ok since you can at least make sure you don't swallow any, but who...
  22. So I was shocked and dismayed after my dentist visit today, to find out that several of my teeth have worn to the dentin layer. I knew my front teeth were extremely thin (going translucent), but didn't realise the yellow colour on the molars means no more enamel... I asked the dentist if it could possibly be gluten-intolerance related, to which he basically...
  23. I feel your pain! I also find it ridiculous that they could easily leave malt out and make it gluten free Of course I've had malt-less "popped rice" and it tasted pretty bland, so maybe that's their secret ingredient... Apparently Kelloggs have done testing on their cereals, and rice crispies falls under 5ppm gluten, which allows it to meet "gluten...
  24. I've had a few aha moments like this. Like realising my work cappacino machine might contain traces of gluten or cc that's affecting me. I was feeling so much better during my dairy free days - otherwise I usually have 1 or 2 cups a day of this stuff. Cut out the coffee, and I'm feeling a tiny bit better. Baby steps, baby steps...
  25. I'm using the Orgran brand flour at the moment, which is an Australian company, that seems to react the least with me. "Gluten-free" flours don't give me super gluten reactions fortunately, I just have some mild nausea after eating them, so I just try to go with the safest mix I can get and don't eat too much of it. "Naturally gluten-free" flours (not certified...
