Hi there, I'm British and married to one of your lovely Americans. We live in the UK but always celebrate Thanksgiving and I plan ahead so I can track down imported foods if needed. Our house is gluten free and I can't find a flour I can tolerate, which rules out pumpkin pie. I don't want to disappoint the poor man, so can anyone suggest any other...

Thanks, Sophie! I'll have a look at the group. I'm aware of Sue Shepherd but I'll check if I'm using the latest list. Good luck with your elimination diet

Cass - Yup, my doctor is a muppet He understands I have coeliac disease but thinks I also have IBS. I've explained that for me prunes have the opposite effect to most people but he doesn't really grasp the idea of additional food intolerances causing ongoing problems. He especially doesn't recognise non-GI issues as coeliac/intolerance symptoms. Massively...

ARCHIVED Reading Labels In The UK
India replied to AlysounRI's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I'm not so sure about Tesco but Sainsbury's are very good about labelling their own products for both ingredients and potential cross-contamination. I noticed in the US that store brands seem to be considered inferior but UK supermarket own brand products are pretty good quality. -
Thanks for your replies! I'm really interested to hear about the fructose/tryptophan/serotonin link, which would make a lot of sense. I'm going to eliminate apples, pears etc again but so many foods make me feel unwell that I think a fructose intolerance test would be a useful thing to do. I really struggling with eliminating foods because each time I...

I was following the FODMAPS diet for a while but recently reintroduced a number of foods into my diet, especially apples and pears. I'm pretty sure these don't agree with me but due to our complicated UK health service, I need to wait to see a hospital consultant who can refer me for a fructose intolerance test. Thing is, my anxiety is back and it's...

ARCHIVED Misdiagnosis Of C.f.s. Could It Be Celiac?
India replied to bammers's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh, you poor thing... you do have a lot to cope with. I can't offer much advice but you sound like you may be from the UK, as I am, so I wanted to say hi I hope your doctor can move your appointment forward - my appointment took a while but the gastroenterologist did fast-track my biopsy, so ask for that too when you see yours. As you know, you need... -
ARCHIVED If One More Person Says....
India replied to adab8ca's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thank you for this - I do appreciate it. I'm feeling pretty tired of worrying and messing around with my diet and wondering if I should just accept that recovery will take time. I'm also trying to ignore a couple of the scarier things in that abstract and focus on being glad I got myself diagnosed I'm pretty strict about what I eat and already avoid... -
ARCHIVED If One More Person Says....
India replied to adab8ca's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Skylark - I think I've noticed elsewhere that you're pretty keen on good scientific evidence Can you tell me if you know of any research that supports this? I'm told my I had a very high TTG score (>1000, though I don't know how the UK scale compares to the US) and that my Marsh score was 2-3, though I don't know how this compares to other people.... -
Thanks Steve - I'm tickled to have a reply on this from an alchemist There seems to be pretty much a consensus on this, so I won't waste my money. Back to the food diary...

ARCHIVED Food Diary Ideas
India replied to India's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That's really interesting - thank you. I was just hearing the other day that people who say they can't tolerate MSG may in fact be intolerant to glutamates, which I had never heard of until then. I'll look into this - I'd still welcome any other suggestions though -
Thanks for your replies. I hadn't been convinced by the testing people I spoke to and this confirms my suspicions. I'm going for a SIBO test soon but my local hospital doesn't do a fructose intolerance test, so I need to find somewhere then persuade my doctor to refer me (I love our National Health Service but it can be difficult). I hope to never...

Does anyone have any advice on food intolerance testing? Coeliac UK told me the tests are a waste of time and money but I know people on here have used them - were they helpful? As I don't live in the US, I'm not asking for recommendations of companies but I'd love to know whether you think they produce meaningful results. Many thanks

ARCHIVED Food Diary Ideas
India posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi all, Sorry, I've been asking a few questions lately but I'd be grateful if you good people could offer some ideas. I'm keeping a food diary to try to identify what triggers my symptoms. I was hoping I'd start to spot patterns but for most symptoms every day looks about the same (ate, got bloated... still tired, still C'd) and for a couple of... -
ARCHIVED What Is Up With The Brain Fog?
India replied to rdunbar's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't have much advice to offer, though I do hope you feel better soon! I had my first proper glutening in June (gluten-free since January this year) and it took ten days for my symptoms to clear. The last to go was a big increase in muddling my words, which was highly entertaining to everyone except me Thing is, I had horrible brain fog for most... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free In College
India replied to linuxprincess's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi there. I'd recommend looking for 'one pot' recipes. There are various books out there on this topic, designed for simple cooking without too much equipment. Many recipes can be adapted to be gluten-free fairly easily. I ate this way when I was a student - I'd make up a big casserole and dip into it over a couple of days. It's cheap, easy, healthy... -
ARCHIVED Constipation...
India replied to ToriMartin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Bully4You, can I ask how your FODMAPs diet is going? I have similar problems to you and no improvement on this diet so far. I'm only two weeks in and I'm going to persevere but I was just wonder how you find it? Thanks -
ARCHIVED Very Depressed, Suggestions....
India replied to Lindsay630's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Lindsay, Other people have already made very good comments but I have one further thing to add, which I hope won't sound insensitive. I decided when I started eating gluten free diet that I was not going to let it bother me that other people can eat things I can't, since gluten-free is forever and forever is a really long time to be upset about something... -
ARCHIVED Missed Periods, Anxiety, Milk Of Magnesia...
India replied to India's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Marz, Thanks for your reply. Milk Of Magnesia is apparently gluten-free and was um, highly effective - so maybe I'll give it one more go and see if it happens again. I'm in the UK and don't know the other brands you mention unfortunately. I'm not taking any other medications though; also, I'm very careful about gluten and my house is gluten-free.... -

ARCHIVED Is Cancer Inevitable For Me?
India replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm no expert but I think I read that the risk returns to normal after five years gluten free - that is, it is untreated coeliac disease/eating gluten which carries the slightly higher risk. That said, I would expect someone with coeliac disease who knowingly continues to eat gluten to also be neglecting their health and lifestyle in other ways which might... -
ARCHIVED What Would You Do In My Situation?
India replied to KevinG's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Mushroom - having seen the wondrous different that Humira makes to my husband's arthritis, I think it's amazing that you've improved enough to try going without it. He tested negative for coeliac disease and had no response to going gluten-free - his arthritis seems to be a genetic curse. But in the cases where gluten causes noticeable problems, it makes... -
ARCHIVED Missed Periods, Anxiety, Milk Of Magnesia...
India replied to India's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi and thank you for your reply. I've already given up corn too, plus dairy and some other things. I'll keep going with the food diary I guess. On the plus side, despite the sleepless night, yesterday was the most energetic I've felt in ages - not as good today, but hooray for the good days! Good health to you -
ARCHIVED Is Cancer Inevitable For Me?
India replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nothing is inevitable - it's amazing what the human body can endure and survive and there are many people on this board who are a testament to that. From what I understand, there is a slightly elevated risk of cancer for celiacs but that's all. If you believe the worst will happen, you may miss out on the chance to make the most of all the time you have left... -
ARCHIVED Missed Periods, Anxiety, Milk Of Magnesia...
India posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Oh, it all seems such a mess. I've been gluten-free since January. I posted messages recently when I tried an elimination diet. After two weeks, I abandoned the diet as I was becoming very weak and losing too much weight. Since then, I've been excluding FODMAPs from my diet and keeping a very detailed food diary. However, a couple of new problems have...
