  1. Hi Jo, I'd recommend reading around on this board as much as possible - it's the best source of information I've found. I live in London so do message me if I can help at all with UK advice. Labelling for gluten is pretty good over here, especially supermarket own brands. A few places - Wetherspoons, La Tasca etc - label menus with gluten-free options...
  2. Thanks for your replies! A1956chill - Legumes seem to disagree with me horribly but I eat a lot of dairy, which doesn't seem to bother me. I eat loads because cheese goes with almost everything and also because I have osteopenia and my GP won't prescribe supplements. So I guess I still have those carbs - thanks MCC0523 - I should have mentioned...
  3. Hi all, I've just lost most of another afternoon flaked out on the sofa, which isn't how I like to live. I'm trying and failing to figure out my many food intolerances. Two things I haven't tried cutting out are potatoes and rice (white rice, anyway - I think brown makes me tired). I can't tolerate grains such as teff and millet, though I do eat buckwheat...
  4. Easting gluten sets off an immune reaction that attacks the lining of the intestines and can cause a myriad of seen and unseen symptoms that can last for weeks. I can't see why anyone would you deliberately do that to themselves for the sake of eating a roll. There is nothing that would make me consider eating gluten. I'm lucky that I was diagnosed with...
  5. I can't help with the numbers, I'm afraid - but please find a new doctor!
  6. Thanks so much for all your ideas. I've already tried the potato mash suggestion which made a lamb casserole really yummy. I'll definitely try some of your other suggestions and see if I can find the cookbook too. I really appreciate your help
  7. Hello all, A friend bought me a slow cooker and I'm starting to feel very guilty about not using it. I used to love cooking but I have so many intolerances that most of my meals these days consist of something grilled served with something steamed. My main problem is that I don't know how to thicken sauces as I can't tolerate corn and every gluten...
  8. So sorry - just realised that you're not yet gluten-free. Hopefully that will improve things for you.
  9. I have it sporadically. It's a real pain that I don't know how useful or useless I'll be on any given day but it sounds like you have it much worse. Food intolerances - which, like the brain fog, only appeared after going gluten-free - seem to be the cause of mine and fructose is definitely one problem. Took me a while to figure that out because I was eating...
  10. I posted something very similar about a year ago! Very glad for you xx
  11. Hi Becca, I'm sorry you got upset at work. I hope you can find a way to cope with this - having your own treats handy should definitely help. I decided not long after starting the diet that it's not worth getting upset by what other people eat - gluten free is forever and forever is a long time to be pissed off. Also, I don't want other people to feel...
  12. When I'm abroad, I've always found meals from supermarkets as well as restaurants. It used to be because it was cheaper and also because I love seeing what people really eat when I go overseas. Now though, I also find it easier to stay gluten-free that way - it feels less risky to know exactly what's in at least some of my meals. European supermarkets...
  13. I went to Brussels a few months ago and didn't find things too difficult - I found a gluten-free pizza place (which even had special gluten-free after dinner cookies) and the main supermarkets had pretty good labelling and some gluten-free products. That said, if you're struggling, hopefully a trip on the Eurostar would be worthwhile - London is pretty...
  14. I avoid soy scrupulously so that should be ok. I also avoid MSG but haven't looked into that aspect of glutamine, so I'll check that out - thanks
  15. Oh boy. I'm interested in the salicylates suggestion but I just don't know how much else I can cut out. I keep trying to cut things out but I get so run down. I daren't try an elimination diet again - when I did this last year, I was an absolute physical wreck and my periods stopped. I've been doing ok for a few months without gluten, corn, soy and FODMAPs...
  16. I've had a horrible year so far and, after a year gluten free, my symptoms seem to have gone back six months with everything I eat making me feel rough and feeling wiped out all the time. So yes, stress seems to be affecting me, at any rate :/ Hope things improve for you soon.
  17. Ugh, poor you :/ I think I've had coeliac disease for a few years but not that long. I can't get anyone medical to show any interest in intolerances - how about you? I'm having various investigations at the moment but no-one ever asks about how what I eat affects my symptoms. I'm not sure if I have a leaky gut or what... Things have been fairly stable for...
  18. There was no MSG in the sausages - they're about the only only ones I can eat. I really think the problem was spinach, which I've had both cooked and raw in the last few days. Does anyone else have experience of intense stress setting off extra intolerances, please? :/
  19. Like Skylark, I think we need to tell this to you straight. I know it's tough for you but "pretty much gluten-free now except for lunches and an occasional Wendy's" is not gluten-free. If you are still consuming gluten, you body is still having an immune response and damage can be happening that you don't know about yet. Future side effects aren't just possible...
  20. I just ate a spinach salad and started feeling rough, so I'm beginning to think spinach is the problem I had spinach with the sausage both times and assumed it was still safe. It's the last green leafy veg I could eat so I'm not happy to think it may be another food I can't eat. I saw my doctor today, as it happens, and mentioned that I feel best if...
  21. Hi all, So far, the new year hasn't been a good one. My symptoms haven't been too bad lately but since the weekend, I've been feeling wretched. I have to avoid a lot of foods but I've only eaten safe foods and I think my favourite gluten-free sausages are the problem. Can stress set off new food intolerances or am I crazy? Stress has been the trigger...
  22. Hi Bonnie Blue, You poor thing - it's so difficult not to know what's wrong with you, especially after going through it all once already with coeliac. Right now, I'm going through something pretty similar with my husband. He has various health problems but the diagnoses and treatments haven't been enough to make him better. We have an appointment with...
  23. I've been gluten-free for a year and I'm lucky that I've only been glutened properly once. However, as well as GI issues, tiredness, brain fog etc, the longest-lasting effect was a big increase in my word muddling. Weird.
  24. Assuming the microwave is fairly clean, I don't think it'll be a problem. I've always covered my food in microwaves anyway, to reduce cleaning. I have to share a microwave at work and I've been fine so far.
  25. Hello all, I've just lost another day to that foggy, can't-think-straight, want-to-stop-and-nap feeling. It's especially frustrating because things had been better recently and I've starting to make new plans. I'm really stuck at present though, as I just can't make progress on the proposal I'm working on So - as I know this is something that affects...
