  1. Dairy Queen. I was a member of the Blizzard of the Month club once. Now, the prospect of having to have them clean the mixing machine just for my Blizzard - and crossing my fingers that they are thorough enough is not worth the bother. And when they did the girl scout cookies ones - my, but that was heaven. I also miss their hamburgers, dipped cones...
  2. I have used the Tarte Lights Camera Lashes Mascara. I really liked it for thick, more dramatic lashes. Now I'm using their Multiply mascara (only part 3 of a 3 part process), which is a softer, more natural looking mascara. I mostly use Afterglo - which is almost like airbrushing my face. Then, for moisturizers I use 100% Pure (face - and some yummy...
  3. I miss those Nilla wafers to use in some good, old-fashioned banana pudding. I miss Krystal's hamburgers. Oreos. Tiramisu was my restaurant dessert of choice. AND I miss the convenience - even of just bringing something to a potluck and being able to eat any leftovers. Now, though I like being able to share something delicious and gluten-free,...
  4. Oh, update on Maggiano's: I realized that I have to tell them to get me new silverware - that has NOT touched the table - to be safe. WITH a fresh napkin to place it on. Their gluten-free kitchen is even separate, and given that I even saw a bread crumb on a plate the last time I was there, the tablecloth is a very likely culprit. For the average...
  5. Odd. I did not get the same information about Mary Kay when I researched them. My mother-in-law has sold it for years, and after looking into it from her end, she suggested getting other makeup. They don't even mention gluten on their website, which is always a red flag for me. I've had too many representatives of cosmetic companies telling me things...
  6. After running the gamut of calling companies and receiving ambiguous replies as to their comments (and the untrustworthy insistence to avoid responding to inquiries in writing), I do all I can not to buy make up that will actually say up-front that it is gluten-free. That said, I use Afterglow cosmetics for most things, and a few items from Tarte's line...
  7. I went out and got glutened last night at Maggiano's. When the pain started about a half hour to an hour later(I can tell because my side will start hurting with every movement). I know that eating out is at my own risk, but so far, I get glutened about 50% of the time I go out - even at restuarants with "special arrangements" like PF Changs and Maggiano...
  8. I saw you sign yourself: a girl who liked twinkies, and had to comment. Yesterday was my daughter's first gluten-free birthday. We found this gluten-free bakery that will ship their goods, that you can order from on-line. They make gluten-free twinkies! They call 'em winkies, heh.

You can find them on google: Gluten-free Creations Bakery. :-D

  9. I also completely miss Chic-Fil-A. As with any fast food restaurant, I have my doubts as to their training in gluten free. Even when I've been standing in a restaurant watching after giving specific instructions, I've seen the employees (kids of about 17 or 18) not entirely master gluten-free safety. Most employees of any fast food establishment are very...
  10. In my mid-teens I got shingles with impetigo. After that, I noticed strange GI symptoms, but they were embarrassing and caused no pain. I told no one at that time. I guess through the years the damage increased and the symptoms worsened fairly gradually. When I did tell a doctor about the GI symptoms I was having ~10 years later, she simply wrote IBS...
  11. Lately, my biggest obstacle is the-gluten-that-came-from-I-know-not-where! Then, I'm on this search for new things that could poison me - and attempting to temper the search (and not waste my energy by going to far in the direction of paranoia). I love at home beauty treatments. I'm known for it in my family. I can also get lost in my thoughts...
  12. vbecton, Oddly enough, I was just settling down to eating salsa at a Mexican restuarant (after they had carefully prepared food for me in separate oil) when the waitress told me, "Stop!" They actually put a gluten-containing chicken baste in their Salsa! It's good salsa, so I guess anyone who can have gluten has no reason to complain. But, sadly, yeah...
  13. Thank you, Peter! I guess as a consumer having to suddenly seemingly try so hard to be safe, it is easy to read "We cannot guarantee..." simply as "Use at your own risk". I rarely, if ever, use "guarantee" myself. But, because I do make it clear that it is a safety issue, I am sure my queries elicit legal defense jargon. I am curious as to what...
  14. That does make perfect sense; however, where does that leave me/us? What am I supposed to do, then? Just give up, roll in the gluten-batter of life, and die? Is resistance futile, Seven-of-Nine? Signed, A somewhat mentally exhausted person
  15. I did, in fact, let them know that these products could make me sick. After receiving an e-mail response from Oil of Olay that informed me that because their products are meant to be used externally that I should not worry - I must be the only one who ever gets food on her face and may lick it off without thinking *shame on me* (they also included some links...
  16. Something recently happened to me that has my head spinning! It makes it harder and harder to trust companies with my health. I e-mailed Revlon about several of their cosmetics. They took several days to respond, so I finally called them. The sweetest little customer service representative told me that every item (of 5) I asked her about was gluten...
  17. Exactly!!! I'd much rather that my husband really wants me to come to show me off - than like one guy from my class reunion: the now-preacher left the wife at home with the kids to party unencumbered with old high school friends and girlfriends!!!
  18. Yeah, it sounds like she needs to make a firm decision to be a SAFE person for the family unit of her son. And, I can say that I cannot blame your husband at all for wanting you to come to the reunion really badly. If he wants to live the dream of showing off his cute wife and family to former classmates and to have you meet and know the people he talks...
  19. I agree with T.H. The thing that seems to help others take me seriously is the same thing that freaked me out as I was in the process of being diagnosed: the fact that gluten (even small amounts) triggers my body's immune system to fight MY OWN BODY! Gluten intolerance and gluten allergy seem to carry a casual air of "avoidance" for many people...
  20. LOL!!! I had the same issues with family (though over the phone when I was first diagnosed). My aunt blithely asked/assumed, "But you can still have self-rising flour". She continued to mention other baking products. I experienced the same from so many others. I live far away from them, so I am not sure what form their misunderstandings may take in person...
  21. For me, it was a kind of death sentence. I went through practically every stage of grieving, mostly denial. Grocery stores were a source of depression. Commercials about products I couldn't have caused a lump in my throat. Food is part of who we are. It is our memories. To realize that I could not ever again relive a memory through some of my favorite...
  22. So, so, scary! It has to be fun for those sadistic someone's who know that all it takes to hurt someone they don't like is a little wheat! They must get drunk with power. In restaurants, knowing that my health is in the hands of the server, I do all I can to be kind. If we intend to go back, we make sure tip more than 20%. (On a side note: I do think...
  23. Something's in my family... autoimmune issues are one generation behind me... One had Type 1 diabetes that began at ~25 years old and continued to battle for her life until shortly before 50 years. Another - rheumatoid arthritis that hit so hard at 39 that she couldn't get out of bed. Always had stomach issues. Is loosing the ability to function independently...
  24. I wish I knew everywhere the gluten could come from. I just visited my in-laws and was glutened every day, it seems, of the 5 day trip. The sad thing is that they really did try so hard to be accommodating and keep me from getting sick (since my recent diagnosis), but we obviously missed something. On the last day, the culprit seemed to be the hand soap...
