  1. I think it makes sense to call him if you're getting full-body itching. Make sure he knows everything you're taking - even over-the-counter supplements. Better to irritate the doc but be sure you're being safe than to have something bad happen to you. I'm a med student who will someday be on the OTHER end of those phone calls, and I still say it's better...
  2. Yeah ... I am totally afraid that my body sees casein as gluten-ish and therefore to be attacked. I am still sad about giving up gluten. I don't want to give up my beloved dairy too. Time is not my strong suit. I am an impatient person. Ugh. I guess I'm going through all those stages of change. I think I'm still at the pitching-a-hissy-fit stage right...
  3. He's worried that you might be sensitive to the amoxicillin. Not necessarily an allergic reaction so he wants to treat the symptoms (the benadryl is for the symptoms of itching). If it gets worse it could be a drug allergy and you would need to go to the ER to make sure you're safe (drug allergies can be quite serious) but some people just get annoying rashes...
  4. It makes me so sad to hear about doctors who behave that way. I'm a medical student and the way docs act these days makes me sad sometimes. A lot of that is due to pressure from insurance companies to see as many patients as possible so they can afford their support staffs (most offices have to have one person dedicated to only handling Medicare claims, for...
  5. I think I have to give up cheese. I'm not sure, but every time I eat a bunch of it I feel ill. If I eat smaller amounts, I feel a little icky but not terrible. Kefir is OK. I think this all adds up to having trouble with casein. But now all of a sudden, out of the blue, my back is killing me! Muscle aches as if I'd done something specifically bad, but...
  6. Bread. Sandwiches. Pizza. Guinness. Muffins. Garlic bread. Lasagna. Normal soy sauce.
  7. I think I am sensitive to casein. Kefir seems to be OK. Cheese seems to be bad. Especially melted cheese.
  8. Gluten-free multivitamins are a great way to get the same style of fortification that you used to get from breads. High-calorie things to do would be to fry foods (if you can tolerate the high-fat content) or add butter (if you can tolerate the dairy). Eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies, or steamed veggies. Those are naturally gluten-free. Hamburgers...

    ARCHIVED Wasabi

So what should we do about wasabi in Japanese restaurants? Does anybody know what restaurants usually use?
  10. I'm still working on getting the diet part in order. I still feel nauseated and bloated sometimes. I'm not sure if I have to give up dairy completely or WHAT. I am starting to get confused and frustrated. I'm being very, very good about gluten, but the rest of it is what's causing me trouble right now. I think it'll be a while before I manage another ...
  11. Since the race I've been on a pretty big break from working out. I'm hoping to jump back into the swing of things more today. I keep feeling bloated though: Sunday night, then last night. Both times it was after eating corn tortilla chips with cheese melted on them. I think it's the cheese, since I've eaten tortilla chips safely. I think I have to give up...
  12. Yeah. That's why I ride the stationary bike. That's exactly it. I can't run 5 days a week yet, but I'm working on that, too.
  13. I'm still a little bit afraid of bicycles. It's a silly fear. I'll get over it sometime and work on that mini triathlon. I do ride the stationary bike a lot, so I'm cross-training in a way, but swimming would be great for my upper body strength. I'll keep that in mind for sure. Not having to stop my workouts or make them less due to physical discomfort...
  14. Good luck! I'll send you good thoughts for only the expected biopsy results.
  15. One of my biggest Celiac symptoms is acid reflux. I just got diagnosed and I've been on omeprazole (proton pump inhibitor, which reduces acid in the stomach to treat reflux) for months now. It helps a lot. Changing your diet will be a good place to start to treat the reflux. Make sure you're not eating late at night and be sure you're exercising regularly...
  16. :-D Thanks! My running got a lot better since going gluten-free too. I used to get abdominal cramping and now I don't anymore, which helps a lot. I do plan on doing more races, although it's kinda late in the year right now. I might have to get through the winter before I can do another one. Ultimately someday I'll shoot for a 5-mile or half-marathon...
  17. Speaking as a medical student, any time that a doctor sees a sudden rise in diagnoses (like with fibromyalgia, for example) there's a question of overdiagnosis. Doctors want to give patients a diagnosis. We like to label things. We like to have explanations. Honestly, I think most doctors choose "IBS" as a diagnosis of frustration more than convenience...
  18. Thanks for the tips, especially about the ex-pats and Hyatt and other possibilities. I WILL GO. :-D I may come back a couple pounds thinner from all the rice and veggies, but what's a couple more pounds between friends? I'll probably fit in better over there if I'm a couple pounds skinnier. From what I've heard from Chinese people I've known, the standard...
  19. That is so true. I hadn't realized how far I was from health myself ... so in my case I hadn't realized how bad I had it! My fiance was the one who got fed up sooner than I did. I was too focused on making it through each day and lost sight of the overall picture of constant nausea, D, etc.
  20. Thanks, guys. I really have no idea where the contamination CAME from, which is why I thought it was OK to eat the chips. But I think you guys are right. I'll just make sure I bring food from home or am full before arriving at the friend's house. You know, I don't mind the discomfort anymore. I don't like it and I'll stay gluten-free to not have it, but...
  21. I completely agree. People don't understand how little gluten it can take to get you sick, and it's not because they don't care. They just don't realize how miserable Celiac is. I get people all the time who say, "Oh, I just wouldn't be able to give up [delicious bread product]!" and it's because they don't understand what misery it is to eat that delicious...
  22. I've only been diagnosed for a couple weeks, but I was really doing a lot better. Then all of a sudden last night I had the familiar feeling of bloating and nausea - I got glutened. I have no idea what got me because I checked all ingredients. I'm assuming at this point that it was cross-contamination because I ate some corn chips at a friend's house, and...
  23. That's also fantastic. I'm so glad you were able to have that experience with your husband! It's such a relief to be able to be "normal" again, isn't it? I love feeling like my body isn't out to get me anymore. I feel like I can trust it.
  24. Congratulations to you too! HOORAY FOR US! I love feeling better now that my diagnosis has been made. I'm not back to being completely normal, but I feel SO MUCH BETTER.
  25. I wanted to run my first 5K back in April, but the undiagnosed Celiac knocked me on my butt and I was unable to train for it. I finally got the Celiac under better control (including getting the diagnosis!) and I just ran my first 5K race today. It felt great! I just wanted to say that Celiac may have slowed me, but it couldn't stop me from reaching my goal...
