  1. Nobody asked that yet! He does eat gluten. He does not brush his teeth and rinse well before I kiss him. So far, I don't think that's a problem ... stopping the dairy did stop the symptoms and today I'm feeling good. I guess I should add that we don't suck face constantly and he does like to chew gum after eating, so maybe he's semi-cleaning before I even...
  2. How do you make yourself work out even when you're tired from a Celiac relapse? This is my current Big Struggle. I originally started running because I wanted to do lifestyle changes to prove that my GERD wasn't getting any better (or hopefully fix it!) but after 9 months of GERD, turns out I had Celiac. So fast forward a month to now, and I'm just coming...
  3. Yeah ... Zantac every day for 4 years is not a good thing at all, although I hesitate to blame your hiatal hernia on the Zantac. But you're right - that's way too long. Zantac and other acid reducers are good for targeted healing help. They're not supposed to be taken for years and years. That sounds miserable.
  4. It's true that there's a lot of variation between people in terms of fiber required. Why don't you go in and ask the doc about getting the Celiac panel? Let the doc know you're still having trouble. I've definitely had the bloating and stool problems. I was also a fiber fiend before going gluten-free. I had a lot of stomach symptoms and pain in my GI tract...
  5. Those are good questions. I'm using all my own cookware, and I have my own toaster oven as well. I got my own peanut butter, even. While I don't have my own cooking area in the kitchen, I do cook only on cooking boards or clean paper towels or clean plates, so the cross-contamination should be limited (not using dairy is sufficient to cut the symptoms...
  6. Be aware that all of these possible problems depend on the source of the reflux. There actually is no flap at the top of the stomach. There's a sphincter - a muscular ring - that can relax and allow acid to splash up from the stomach to the esophagus. Depending on the reason why there is irritation (gastritis? Celiac irritation of the sphincter? Eating late...
  7. I agree completely with the smarties who already spoke up. I'm just popping in to say I hope you feel better soon. The diet is hard to adjust to, but if it's what makes the difference for you then it's totally worth it.
  8. Good call. That sounds like gall stones potentially. An ultrasound of the gallbladder would help tell if there's inflammation or stones.
  9. My mom already bought me my own set of cookware to keep in her house for when I visit after I told her about the CC risks. While I'm there, I'll cook my own food over Christmas and stay safe that way. My mom is great. She's going to stock up on gluten-free food (kept separately) for while I'm there, and my cookware has its own shelf that's away from the rest...
  10. Yup. I've had the loose stools that make me late for work, even when I try to leave extra time. I get the bloating, too. My pain has been more transient and more often in my stomach, but yeah. Pain. Could be Celiac! If you've already had the EGD with biopsies and the Celiac panel, sounds like it's time to just try the gluten-free diet and see if it helps...
  11. They take up quite a bit of space in our small freezer (I have lots of frozen veggies and my fiance has lots of prepared foods that are frozen). Also, I'm going to give it a year before I try reintroducing anything, so they wouldn't last so well. My symptoms are more like Celiac than like lactose intolerance with eating the dairy. Exhaustion, fuzzy-headedness...
  12. My main symptoms were reflux and diarrhea. Both improved once I cut gluten and casein (dairy). I'm still working on healing the gastritis so I can hopefully get off my omeprazole for good.
  13. I'm hoping to live in either Beijing or Shanghai for a month as part of my medical education, and I'm a brand-new Celiac. I'm glad you revived this thread!
  14. AGREED. Actually, this thread is really sad. I tried to read all the way through but it just made me sad so I stopped. I hate bad doctor stories. Sometimes I wonder how these idiots ever made it through med school. Maybe the 45 hours of standardized testing that comprise MCAT and USMLE Steps 1-3 filter out the sane, nice people and allow the idiotic jerks...

    ARCHIVED Help With Diagnosis?

The biopsies are also useful to determine how badly damaged your guts are from the Celiac. I agree - you've got Celiac based on the blood tests. The other thing the endoscopy would allow is to make sure you don't have any H pylori overgrowth in your stomach (a bad bug that can cause ulcers and predispose to stomach cancer) and also check for any existing...
  16. Currently healing up from my first awful relapse. I needed to hear this. Thank you.
  17. I hear that. When we are in clinical hours, our meal times are limited and food is tough to come by. There's often nowhere for us to store food (no fridge) so we live off "pocket food" that goes in the white coat and also cafeteria food. So I guess that means ... only pocket food for me! Buy stock in Lara bars. Yeah. I think I'll have to build...
  18. Yeah. I just need to get over the aversion to constantly cooking! Sometimes one just has to pick oneself up, dust oneself off, and get over the "it's not fair" BS so that life can continue in a productive, happy manner. I am also feeling whiny about the no-dairy as I will really really really miss cheese. BUT WHATEVER. I feel bad enough right now that...
  19. The hardest part is the planning. I'll give minestrone a try for sure. And lots of chicken options. I just need to start playing around with it. So far, I'm starting to feel a bit better. I just still have some pain from the damage done while I was eating the dairy. Put myself on the bananas-and-rice diet to try to let my body heal. We'll see if it works...
  20. Actually, I think the determination that it has to be wheat is farther up that same page that I linked as my source. I don't know WHY except that that's what they think was actually at the Last Supper.
  21. I get acid and plenty of good, old-fashioned D. SO MUCH. It's incredible. Sometimes I wonder if I actually ate that much.
  22. Did you guys know that the Vatican has a web site extension thingy (like .com or .edu or .net) all to themselves? It's .va - how cool is that? They have their own web thingy! ETA: I found my answer, at least as far as the Catholic Church's website is concerned. Open Original Shared Link It doesn't address the actual Celiac people, though. I...
  23. Thanks! I'll keep eyes on it. I already cooked today, but I used the rice cooker + steamer attachment. That's been my go-to mechanism of cooking since getting diagnosed. But it's getting a little old, since I've been (over)using it. Time for crockpot goodness! Yeah, the only real problem is that the steak and spaghetti are seriously the only...
  24. H Pylori are the only bacteria that would cause that pain. The Upper GI study would not show an ulcer - that would have to be shown on endoscopy. The burning you're describing could be either gastritis and reflux or an ulcer, and without doing the endoscopy there's no way to know between those two. The hiatal hernia will predispose you to having gastritis...
  25. That's absolutely wonderful. Congratulations to your niece and her new husband and to you on your eating success! YAY! It's always nice to hear about the times when things go well. Gives me hope when I'm in the middle of a reaction and feeling like crud. I like being reminded of happy times to come.
