ARCHIVED Conferences/retreats/seminars/etc
Emilushka replied to Aimee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I bring food in pyrex containers. I bring something like beans or edamame that won't require refrigeration. If there's a microwave, I'll heat up my food, but I try to bring something that will taste good cold. I just bring my food in a lunch box. I bring a fruit with it, and stuff my entree with veggies and fiber and protein so that I won't be craving cookies... -

ARCHIVED Hello New Here Have A Few Questions
Emilushka replied to minidobie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Gagging was one of my biggies. The reflux and anxiety that came with gluten just made the gagging worse and worse ... it was like a vicious cycle for me. Ugh. Bad memories. -
ARCHIVED Do Most People Challenge The gluten-free Diet?
Emilushka replied to zus888's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have no desire to challenge with gluten because I had a positive antibody test and a great response to the gluten-free diet. Plus, I had an unofficial challenge by accidentally eating wheat pasta at a restaurant, so I can verify that symptoms come back if I eat gluten. I don't think everyone challenges with gluten. -

Kimchi is pickled cabbage. -
This morning was a weird one for me ... I can't figure out made my body mad, but whatever it did, I wish it hadn't!

ARCHIVED Had My 6 Month Blood Test Check Up!
Emilushka replied to SaraKat's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
IgG and IgA are both forms of antibodies. IgA antibodies are found in mucosal surfaces (like your gut wall, for example). IgG antibodies are found everywhere in your body and are the more "general" antibodies. When you get sick with something that attacks your gut wall, the IgA antibodies are first formed against the attacker. IgG antibodies are then formed... -
I still get weird stools five months after going gluten-free. It's not every time and it's not awful the way it used to be, but it's definitely not entirely normal either. Hang in there. If you're getting a variety it sounds like unhappy guts to me, and you should give yourself some time to heal. It really does take a long time to get to feeling normal...

I'd keep your own gluten-free sponge separate. I don't trust a porous sponge to stay gluten-free. I'd separate that out so much that it's in your bedroom, rather than living in the kitchen. It's too easy to make a mistake with a sponge that lives in the kitchen. Otherwise I think that'd be fine. The sink should be OK as long as it's a reasonably clean...

ARCHIVED Help With Biopsy Report
Emilushka replied to stilltired07's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sounds like you've had it for a while. It takes time to destroy the villi, which is what has happened in your gut. I couldn't possibly say how long you've had it, though. You could have had it as a young kid, but there's really no way to say for sure without a time machine and another set of biopsies. -
My husband eats gluten and leaves crumbs all over. I just put down a paper towel and put all my spoons, forks, dishes, etc. on top of that. I never trust the counter tops or the floors to be gluten-free. That's my biggest trick.

ARCHIVED New Weird Symptom...
Emilushka replied to zebaldwin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Not a stupid question. There are tests to evaluate your muscle function. If this is continuing and it's only in your esophagus, there's such a thing as an esophageal muscle spasm (along with other functional problems) that you could be experiencing. It sounds like it's worth an evaluation. -
ARCHIVED Asthma And Dairy - Is It Lactose Or Casien Or Other That Is The Culprit?
Emilushka replied to StacyA's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Singulair works for a long period of time because it's a steroid. I wouldn't be surprised if being off the singulair for a long period of time caused the levels to gradually wear off and then your body to respond with increased asthma symptoms. Singulair's greatest benefit is in preventing asthma symptoms by having a long duration of action and maintaining... -
ARCHIVED Really Confused: Can Anybody Interpret These Tests
Emilushka replied to Marlie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Does it really matter between the two? Either would mean NO GLUTEN. -
ARCHIVED Really Confused: Can Anybody Interpret These Tests
Emilushka replied to Marlie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
1) The total IgA is within normal - it's fine for fighting infections. 2) I don't know what DGP is. Intraepithelial lymphocytosis means that there are lots of white blood cells (which tackle infections and also react to inflammation) within the lining of the gut wall. "Intra" means within, the "epithelium" is the gut wall, and "lymphocytes" are white blood... -
ARCHIVED I Miss Beer
Emilushka replied to mcc0523's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I totally hear you. I spent a semester in Berlin during college and fell in love with beer then. The good stuff. German beer on tap EVERYWHERE YOU WENT. Then I discovered Guinness, and we were buddies. Guinness and I had great times until Celiac. NOW WE ARE BROKEN UP. I miss Guinness. My goodness, my Guinness. I miss it SO MUCH and I don't dare even... -
ARCHIVED Tanning Beds To Increase Vit D?
Emilushka replied to meme2kids's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Tanning beds increase the risk of skin cancer up to 10 times or more (depending on how often they are used). The problems they can cause you down the line with deadly cancer, skin problems, and so on greatly outweigh any minor possible vitamin D benefits. We have gluten-free vitamin D supplements. If you have kidney problems and require fully activated vitamin... -

Teriyaki tofu with onions, celery and green beans over "ancient grain" mix cooked in veggie broth. -
So here's the update. The dance was last night. The other Celiac didn't even go, so I don't think she got to talk to the caterers either. The plate they gave me was a piece of chicken. Then they told me to get in line to get vegetables. That was it. It was a buffet line, so NO THANK YOU. I got my husband some extra food and just ate the food I'd brought...

ARCHIVED How Come You Do Not See Older People ?
Emilushka replied to Karl Otto's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Diabetes can really shorten your life if you don't manage it. Uncontrolled blood sugars ultimately lead to heart disease, poor healing, and lots of other complications. Controlled diabetes, however, doesn't cause problems. The same goes for Celiac. If your immune system is attacking your guts like crazy, you're not going to do well. If you stick to the... -
Here's the thing. My school has a fancy dance with a catered dinner once a year. I contacted the organizers to ask for the caterer's contact info so that I could request a gluten- and dairy-free meal. The organizers did not give me the caterer's info but said there was another Celiac guest who was getting a gluten-free dinner, and the caterer had already...
